Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you want to hear more from Markey, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Over to you!

and Emma will seek comfort in wills arms…

On the food front, salmon and chips (or chips and salmon) is much less bothersome for me that when in recent weeks Adam requested both mayonnaise AND ketchup as accompaniments to his steak and ale pie in the Bull. So very wrong.

MassiveOvaryaction · 20/08/2025 09:23

And I think Fallon is already up-duffed. A good few weeks back post birthday celebrations she was at the doctor's for unspecified reasons iirc.

DeanElderberry · 20/08/2025 09:26

I just don't want guilt and misery on TA. I want happy happy happy.

Canned salmon - maybe I'll do a 70s style salmon mousse.

1 can salmon (drained, skin removed) or 1 cooked salmon fillet

Gelatine (dissolve the quantity suitable for about a pint)

Small tub natural or Greek yoghurt

Splodge of concentrated tomato puree

Lemon juice to taste

Put it all in a deep bowl, zap with stick blender until smooth, decant into suitable mould, very lightly oiled, leave to set.

Turn out onto plate, adorn as you see fit. Personally quite keen on thinly sliced cucumber, feathery dill, lemon wedges

Good with salad or on toast or in sandwiches. The sort of thing Jill would have produced back in the day.

Brefugee · 20/08/2025 09:46

tinned salmon always reminds me of my lovely, proudly working class, granny saying "i've got us a nice tin of salmon for us tea" and it being tinned salmon, mixed up with salad cream, 2 lettuce leaves, a quartered tomato, slices of cucumber (seeds removed) and maybe a few radishes if they were still available. (all veg from the allotment). Between 6 of us. The one tin.

I like the Ed/Fallon/Emma fallout story. SWs are you paying attention?

Yes, that is very troubling. I do like both ketchup and mayonnaise with chips, but not when there is gravy too. In fact (this may be shocking to some) chips and gravy don't go well together in my mind. Roast potatoes and gravy, yes, match made in heaven. Mashed or boiled potatoes with gravy, lovely. But not chips.

I expect you were able to fill up on bread and butter followed by cake. That's how it went in our (Scottish) household!

i am a northerner. And i loathe chips and gravy. British chips (as in big fat ones with floury potatoes and a lovely squishy middle) get Henderson's Relish or vinegar and salt on them. That is it.

Euro-chips - which is mostly what i get on account of where i live - with ketchup and mayo. It is such a popular combo it has special names, and you can buy tubes of it, striped like toothpaste when it comes out.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 20/08/2025 10:05

I married a soft Southerner who doesn't like vinegar. How we have survived 40+ years together is a mystery!

ExitPursuedByABare · 20/08/2025 10:17

I like a tinned salmon in soft brown bread. With vinegar and pepper.

Gonners · 20/08/2025 10:21

I don't think I've had tinned salmon since I left home in 1969. Tuna, yes, but not salmon ... I can't even remember what it tastes like. Is it almost (but not quite) entirely unlike salmon?

Bruisername · 20/08/2025 10:46

I’m a southerner and I love salt and vinegar on my fat chips

ketchup on skinny chips but DH is one of those pesky Europeans who likes mayo

HotCrossBunplease · 20/08/2025 10:47

I was shouting at the radio when Ed and Fallon were blethering on about the Tragedy of Ash- so young, so sudden, primary aged kids, “I just can’t imagine”, wake-up call etc….seriously, you really cant imagine at all what it would be like to have a tragedy like that happen to someone close to you? Really?

Poor old Nic, not even significant enough to qualify as a “wake up call”. Or maybe they put her wake up call on snooze and dozed off again.

And it’s not like the other scripties have forgotten her death, Mia and Amber were talking about it only last week!

TheCrasher · 20/08/2025 11:14

I'm not a southerner and chips need nothing other than a liberal sprinkling af salt.
I remember cooking a meal for a southerner boyfriend and he asked for tomato ketchup. I was horrified. As if I'd have any in the house.
I don't like vinegar.

What is wrong with me? Those nice big fat salty chips could do with some wholemeal bread slathered in butter. Mmmm.

Somewhat ironically I heard the words Lake Buttermere as I said that.
Good job I wasn't eating, I'd have spluttered on the Lake bit.

NetballHoop · 20/08/2025 11:52

For me, chips should have malt vinegar and salt. Nothing else.

I'm related to people who put gravy and curry sauce on theirs and my offspring drench theirs in ketchup and mayonnaise. Fools the lot of them.

We've not heard how TomNTash are coping with the house share with Helen. I'm amazed there hasn't been a major falling out by now.

TheCrasher · 20/08/2025 12:00

That must be quite a tricky family dynamic. No weirdos in my family, thank goodness.

i spotted that reference!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 20/08/2025 12:21

I am a pagan: I would prefer to have tinned tuna over having tinned salmon.

OnlyFrench · 20/08/2025 13:47

I mix ketchup and mayonnaise into my tinned salmon.

NebulousSadTimes · 20/08/2025 13:50

I've only read this page, has salt & sauce been addressed already? I was rather taken aback when asked if I wanted salt and vinegar on my chips in a Scottish chippy Shock. When did salt'n'sauce stop being the norm??

Anyway, thought I'd pop in to RAGE - about nothing to do with TA but it wasn't really worth starting a thread about - Peter White (ha, my muscle memory started typing Shi after Peter 😆) on Y&Ys muttering "Why did you buy it?" after he'd played a recording of a man talking about a book that turned out to be, well, shite. FFS, Peter, do you say that to all the people who come on to raise awareness of things they've fallen victim to? You're a fucking consumer programme, you arse Angry

TheCrasher · 20/08/2025 15:03

@NebulousSadTimes , I'll have to listen to it. I do like You & Yours especially
when Winifred Robinson is on it. I can't approve of your muscle memory though.
I'm still smiling since the Skunk Cost Fallacy.

If I am right, the sauce in salt'n'sauce is the same as the brown sauce you get on mackem chips.

TheCrasher · 20/08/2025 15:19

Peter White's comment was IMO perfectly fine.

I'm still cross about Lake Buttermere.

BeatriceBatchelor · 20/08/2025 16:02

Wot I reckon is that the talk of Ash's children being such a comfort and Fallon's subsequent maundering on will lead to the deliberate conception of Harrispawn

Yep!

the ghastly slurry singsong diction she deploys when being ‘positive’

I can't bear Fallon's Nicola Walker style stuttering.
