Stuck in hospital, in need of a light listen!

So, I'm unexpectedly in hospital wired up to an IV. It's hot, I'm missing my kids and I feel pretty rotten. Can the great hive mind of MN recommend me some gentle and entertaining listens while I'm confined to bed? I've just got up to date on the Welcome to Hell podcast which I loved. Nothing that requires any great concentration as I'm intermittently feverish and intermittently falling asleep!

Hi OP I will have a think and revert, I was recently in a similar position and podcasts got me through the stay. I hope you're feeling better soon. It's awful being away from home and kids.

MassiveOvaryaction · 30/06/2025 18:39

BBC Sounds - Conversations from a long marriage. Gentle listening.

MassiveOvaryaction · 30/06/2025 18:40

I also like Bad People on there. Definitely entertaining but not as gentle!

Theoldwrinkley · 30/06/2025 18:49

Alfie Moore....R4, it's a fair cop. Or David Mitchell 'the unbelievable truth', in particular the one with Richard Osman talking about 'nuts'. Guaranteed to make you smile (bug not laugh out loud uproarious).

There was an interesting Radio 4 thing today about how smart corvids are. And how if you treat them nicely they bring you jewellery. Smile It would have been 3.30 as that was when I was doing the schoool run.

Curious Cases!

Dish with Angela Hartnett and Nick Grimshaw is a nice, lighthearted listen.

I also really like Happy Place and How to Fail - they are more substantial though, but not heavy to listen to.

Curious Cases!

Yes! That was it!

I was on the thread a while back about the woman who was the object of much hatred of crows and there was so much interesting info that I delved further.

Our crows have not yet given us any gifts. But I think it might be that we feed a lot of birds, plus a few foxes and badgers and so they don't feel special enough in the restaurant seating plan. Grin

I can't say enough good things about 'On your Farm' on Radio 4/ BBC sounds.
It's the most perfect 22 minutes of people simply talking about their farm and how they got there and how they work. Gentle and undemanding but fascinating- just what @TheBestSpoon needs. Good luck for your recovery.

TheBestSpoon · 01/07/2025 14:05

Thank you so much everyone. Just heard I'm not going home any time soon, but at least the silver lining is I can work my way through these suggestions...

The parenting hell podcasts are great.
I also would recommend Adam Buxton podcast to anyone - gently paced, interesting guests and agreeable host.

FadedRed · 01/07/2025 14:08

The News at Bedtime on R4x is clever and funny.
Hope you are feeling better soon, Spoon. 💐

Cabin Pressure
Old Harry’s Game
Titanic, Ship of Dreams
Uncanny

I’ve just been listening to ‘The Island’ on BBC Sounds, with Stephen Mangan. Really funny, but you probably have to be familiar with Desert Island Discs! It’s in 6 episodes, 15 mins each.

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 01/07/2025 14:41

Strange But True podcast on BBC Sounds. Presented by the gorgeous Rima Ahmed - she’s great!

And Lucy Worsley’s Lady Killers and Lady Swindlers podcasts on BBC Sounds.

All the best for your recovery, @TheBestSpoon

I’m going to dac that to my list. 15 minutes sounds like pretty much the time it takes me to wash up so that will do nicely Smile

yumisnotaword · 01/07/2025 15:40

I love ‘what did you do yesterday’ it’s a very funny relaxing podcast where they just ask celebrities what they did the day before, sounds boring but it’s great and probably just what you’re looking for! Even the celebrities I don’t know or aren’t interested in have been worth listening to. Get well soon!

CrackingOn50 · 01/07/2025 15:45

The Alan Partridge From the Oasthouse series on Audible cheered me up no end when I was in a similar position.

My Favo(u)rite Murders on Apple podcasts too.

Get well wishes 💐

Don't discount old favorites like Woman's Hour, which can be interesting, Desert Island Discs, which plays good music, and its nice to find out about the person behind the public persona. News Quiz, Just a minute is a great show.
