Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! Over to you!

I wondered if Henry received an e-mail from the Accountant/Solicitor about great-granny's will. Unlikely, I know, as given his age I suppose they would have to tell Helen.

Bruisername · 18/05/2025 20:28

It’s kind of sad they forgot Tony does umpiring
maybe they’re not cricket fans

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 18/05/2025 20:35

It's one more example of how little they care about the content of the programme they produce.

What baffles me is why they expect anyone else to care about it when they so clearly don't.

Gonners · 18/05/2025 20:59

"Dear Henry,

I am pleased to inform you that your great-grandmother has left you the residue of her estate. After (very minor) legacies, this is expected to be in the region of £1,500,000 at today's value. As you will not receive the funds until you attain the age of 21 this amount will vary.

A condition of the legacy is that you should not tell any other person about it. Should you do so, the funds will be redirected to the Society for the Murdering of Goats.

Kind regards,
Random Solicitor

Is George due out of prison soon?

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 18/05/2025 23:09

When does the cricket season end?

echt · 18/05/2025 23:12

This episode:

Henry's accent needs to be sorted - northern at the start.

Gnasher's phone intervention was odd, or just badly scripted. I rather liked Tom's conversation with Henry. Sooo awkward, as they would be. OTOH how is it his business, or is this the village raising the child? However, nice to see the online issues raised by "Adolescence" have been addressed.

I thought Tom was out of order. If Gnasher was genuinely concerned as opposed to just being nosey they should have raised it with Helen.

I do like hearing from Gnasher and TomTit- they are truly awful.

I’m wondering if we’re building up to a county lines storyline (possibly involving George), especially given the shoehorned in reference to Henry having a lockbox a couple of days ago.
Or he’s just being more proactive than his Mum and browsing Rightmove.

I don't think Henry would do that. I think it was an ancestry DNA site he was looking at.

BeatriceBatchelor · 19/05/2025 06:09

I thought it was nice that Tom was looking out for his nephew The lad needs a father figure.

Gonners · 19/05/2025 06:32

I think Henry is probably more mature than Tom!

I would love this! SO much better than Neil foundling since there would be no need for any rewriting of history. He doesn't even need to find anything for this to be a storyline, it just needs to raise the issue.

Bruisername · 19/05/2025 07:49

Given the sw it wouldn’t surprise me if he finds his biological dad and he turns out to be Helen’s perfect man (and loves reasonably local of course) and they get married etc etc and Jack ends up bitter about his lack of biological dad and how his mum wouldn’t let him see him before he died. And he’ll leave home and set up a tent on his bit of land

I think Tom was an interfering prat. If Henry needs a father figure he has Tony.

Gonners · 19/05/2025 08:18

Helen doesn't deserve the perfect man! Also, if Jack wanted to leave home she'd probably offer to pack for him.

That reminds me of a tale of my mother who, aged about 8, took offence at something or other and announced she was leaving home. So she took a small case, packed an orange, a clean vest and a photograph of herself and announced she was off. Her entire family (there were a lot of them) came down to the front gate to wave her off. She got to the end of the road about 50 metres away before turning back.😂

Bruisername · 19/05/2025 08:36

I said Helen’s perfect man so he’s going to be a bit of a prat

i dont mind the bridge farm archers meddling in each others business because they are a close family and Tom and Henry having a close relationship is nice.

I missed what tash thought she had seen?

Oh yes. That would be a proper story.

i do not get this MN thing where nobody except parents is allowed to/dares speak to a child that did not spring from their own loins.

Especially when it is an enmeshed family like the Bridge Farm archers. They live in the same house and the boy has no father in his life. It is absolutely natural and normal that any of the adults in his life, especially the male ones, speak to him about stuff. And it would be good for Henry to have a trusted adult who isn't his mother....

The holiday idea is an odd one as Ambridge seems to be a holiday free zone. Jill and Phill were given some suitcases about 30 years ago so they will be unused for a lucky family member to take with them. A colleague and I wondered at such an unlikely present at the time but can see now that it was forward planning.

How did the Neil foundling story end? I recall he met his mum (at a service station?) and it was all very sweet, but had he seen her since? Was it implied they wouldn’t be keeping in touch? Did Emma or Chris want to meet her?

Cantsleepdontsleep · 19/05/2025 12:19

Personally, I’d have put my brother up to having a chat with my son in a similar
circumstance. It it were something like Debenhams online lingerie section, he’d be far more likely to tell his uncle than his mother…. That said, my brother is considered a ‘cool’ uncle (by my children), and Tom is Tom…

No he met the woman who found him and there was speculation she is his mum and then the story line stopped dead so they could focus on Joy

@RegimentalSturgeon, did you really intend to make a joke about child sexual abuse there?
