Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Over to you!

That was delicious. And I don’t mean the radishes.

I don’t like how breathless Brian sounds every time we hear him ☹️

In the real world beneficiaries would not be told that quickly.

In the real world where a beneficiary is left a specific amount and as long as the estate clearly has enough to pay the specific legacies those beneficiaries can be told what they are getting. Their share will reduce the residuary beneficiary's share.

Peggy didn't own land or houses so her estate is cash , a share portfolio, ISAs- all easy enough to value. She won't have had any debts, other than the funeral costs. In the real world banks would not have released account information that quickly but the accountant probably has a good idea of what assets she had.

There are 20 possible beneficiaries so £5,778.80. It's an oddly specific sum. The accountant would know what investments she had and what the ballpark figure is but until everything has been realised he wouldn't know the exact sum to divide up.

The alternative is the will actually stated £278.94 each- which is not credible unless there is a significance to that and the rest goes to a residuary
beneficiar(y)(ies)or charity.

Could the oddness of the figures be accounted for by tax?

BeatriceBatchelor · 15/05/2025 00:12

But aren't Tony and Lilian the main beneficiaries?

They won't know the IHT unless the exact amount of estate is known. The IHT wouldn't affect small legacies like this if there is a significant estate - they would be paid in full and the IHT is paid from the residue.

BeatriceBatchelor · 15/05/2025 00:12

We don't know that. It's very unlikely Peggy's estate was only around £5,000 so someone or something gets the residue.

She might have said "the sum of £5,000 to be shared equally amongst all my grandchildren and grandchildren and a memorial for Wren"

£278.94 doesn't round up to a round figure no matter how many legacies there are.

LillianGish · 15/05/2025 07:25

It seems that Peggy's will is going to be as much of a surprise to her family as Jack's will was to her. Either there's not much left - after care home fees (hers and previously Aunty Cardboard's) and giving away her money to the rewilding project are taken into account or she's left it to an unexpected beneficiary (St Stephen's for an entire chapel of commemorative windows, the Cat's Protection League, Emma or an individual member of the family she deemed was particularly deserving or in need?) To be honest, I think either course of action would be entirely in character - the controlling matriarch tentacles extending beyond the grave.

WitcheryDivine · 15/05/2025 07:56

I’m amazed that the lawyers have everyone’s email addresses. Even Henry’s?

BeatriceBatchelor · 15/05/2025 08:01

I love how we're already over-infested in Peggy's will.

BeatriceBatchelor · 15/05/2025 08:04

Speaking of wills ...

Glad that Brian hasn't forgotten Will Grundy - the SWs clearly have.

Bruisername · 15/05/2025 08:14

It would be very odd if her to ignore jennys passing in her will. Have we heard that jennys kids are only getting the odd sum

Gonners · 15/05/2025 08:29

"I leave the sum of £278.94 to each of the following and the residue of my estate to whichever of the above is the first to work out how this amount is significant." My suggestion is that 2+7+8+9+4 = 30, which is the number of days in November (Peggy's birthday month). Either that or there is some hitherto unrevealed significance in the letters BGHID.

Because let's face it, we need something to account for why this happened immediately after the inexplicable escape room outing.

JoelenesParrot · 15/05/2025 08:30

Very unseemly to discuss anything to do with the will prior to burial unless absolutely necessary. I thought that was a generally accepted, unwritten rule…although, in this case, I am obviously loving the speculation!

Isn't that what Kate got?

stilldumdedumming · 15/05/2025 08:46

No Kate’s text to Brian just said she was worried there’s been a mistake. That could mean either way. It could be that she’s got the lion’s share and the rest are left £278! Ha ha ha.

20 possible beneficiaries

Tony, Johnnie, Helen, Henry, Jack, Tom, Nova, Seren
Lilian, James, Mungo
Adam, Xander, Debbie, Kate, Phoebe, Noli, Sipho, Alice, Martha

If so, poor old Ruairi, excluded again (although this time I imagine he will have expected it). I wonder if Hazel will turn up for the funeral. Some mention of her in passing would be good. Ditto Christine and Carol Tregorran, both of whom seem to have slipped the SWs' minds. Has anybody said anything about Jill, who was Peggy's sister-in-law and knew her for longer than anybody except Christine?

I wondered if the sudden mention of Will and Nic is a precursor to a SL reviving his love life.

I didn't take it that way. Kate, I'm sure, believes she was her grandmother's favourite- getting a vast amount of money wouldn't be a mistake.

Madcats · 15/05/2025 09:05

I reckon that Kate has been left megabucks. She is the sort of person to phone, unless she wanted to keep things quiet.

It would be fab if there is to be simmering resentment in Ambridge for years to come.

stilldumdedumming · 15/05/2025 09:06

Also my parents (still with us) paid for their funeral long ago - as lots of people do. They got theirs through the coop and spent the dividend on champagne. 🍾

stilldumdedumming · 15/05/2025 09:07

I also wouldn’t mind a significant gift to rewinding so that Tom can be all grovelly and then cross with Kirsty.

Madcats · 15/05/2025 09:12

The SW’s have put Brian and Tony alone in the Bull for a reason, I’m sure.

Goodness I’ve missed hearing the main characters; what a well-deserved treat this week is turning out to be.

It’s pretty impressive that the executor/accountant has all the grandkid’s email addresses (but I’ll stop being picky).

JudyCoolibar · 15/05/2025 09:18

If Peggy did the logical thing and left the residuary estate to her children with the share of any who predecease to go to their children, then they presumably can't work out yet what Kate's ultimate bequest will be. So maybe she's worried because she hasn't heard anything, or she had the same text as all the other grandchildren and thinks that's the lot.

Presumably Peggy provided them along with the instruction this is what they are getting.
