Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Over to you!

After reading something on another site, I wonder did Peggy loan Tom money for his businesses, and has he repaid it?

Madcats · 11/05/2025 20:37

Peggy made a big song and dance about her will, and changing the will, a few years ago. Her stupid charitable trust has complicated things a bit, so presumably a solicitor will be the executor, not one of her children.

I would have thought that it is pretty standard to warn your children what you plan, to minimise post death infighting (unless you dislike them).

Good to hear that there was a joyless episode tonight.

If this was the case, and the money was not repaid, can the Executors ask for repayment or deduct the outstanding loan from any money that was left to the borrower? That assumes, I suppose, that there is something documenting the loan.

No one will know the will yet in England either unless she’d told everyone ahead of time. Tom is assuming I assume

i meant Lynda was being a snob about the teas - not being locally farmed etc etc - much like Laurence was

she’s quite right on the paying!!

Oh good, I didn't think we could be that much at odds.

Bruisername · 11/05/2025 20:48

I’m glad the paying has come out early

the friend of lilys whose name I have no chance of spelling correctly - does she live in ambridge?

Depends on lots of things as to whether beneficiaries are told in advance.

I hope she left it all to the Cat and Dog Home or she's spent it all. Or to just about anyone other than Tom Tit.

stilldumdedumming · 11/05/2025 20:54

I am hoping Gnasher and Tom will start spending the money before the will is anywhere near settled. And also be really superior and cavalier about it - only to find it’s not what they thought.

Didn't Peggy change it around the children and Tony got really upset by it. What happened there? It wasn’t done equally I’m sure, as it felt really unfair to me.

the grandchildren may not inherit at all. We didn’t under my grandmother’s because there were too many step
and half grandchildren. She left it to the immediate children to sort out.

Gonners · 11/05/2025 20:59

That was more entertaining than usual. I think Peggy did make it clear what her will said, but that was a while back and with luck she'll have changed it and left the lot either to the local cats' home or to Kate.

Many years working in probate have soured me when it comes to people thinking they're entitled to inherit.

Sidebeforeself · 11/05/2025 21:17

AAAgh! Just listened , expecting it to be a rant free episode having seen there was no Joy tonight. But can’t believe Lynda said to Lily that the teas would use ‘local Brookfield beef” No resident of Ambridge - especially Lilly - would need to be told that beef from Brookfield was local! Sloppy writing again.

echt · 11/05/2025 22:35

Fingers crossed for massive fall-out over Peggy's will.

Bruisername · 11/05/2025 23:12

No doubt Peggy’s Will is going to just be an opportunity to get Joy involved so she can explain how she inherited her money🙄

I thought that was ok as she was listing the wonders of Ambridge and emphasising how wonderful it is. She started by mentioning herbs from Bridge Farm, then Brookfield beef. [It's a pity she could only think of 2 farms, but hey ho]

OverArmourer · 12/05/2025 06:27

Ode to Joy:

Please go away for at least three months.

JudyCoolibar · 12/05/2025 08:07

Didn't Peggy tell everyone how she was going to leave her money? I suspect they may all have forgotten that care home fees will have taken a hefty chunk of it.

Madcats · 12/05/2025 08:30

Are there any muslim players on the cricket teams? Meat pies seem an odd choice for a cricket tea (but so were blinis), and I suspect that the beef isn’t halal.

I’m looking forward to a Joyless episode this lunchtime; the actress deserves a few weeks months off!

I'm sure Lynda will have thought of that- with her now being an expert on Islam.

She might want to consider vegetarians too.

Yes but she could have just said “Brookfield beef”…Lilly would have known it was local!

Not to mention Hindus ... I assume Usha isn't on the team? Of course there would be no Muslims, Hindus or damned vegetarians on the other team - Lawrence wouldn't permit it!

LillianGish · 12/05/2025 09:46

I can't believe noone has commented on Natasha speaking in Welsh to the twins (well admittedly it was only one word!) when she told them to come along as she left the cricket. So she does speak some Welsh to them - realistic, but not sustainable in the long run I imagine. Perhaps it will be like Ruari's German when he first arrived - performative, but soon forgotten. I am ridiculously over-infested in this detail because as a mother of bilingual kids I know that if she doesn't speak Welsh to them (her own mother-tongue) then there's no way they will learn it - not many Welsh language schools outside Wales and even Welsh granny Pat doesn't speak it. Perhaps we can infer from that one word last night that it's going on off-air all the time when Joy is dominating the airwaves.
Peggy's will has the potential to be interesting. The grandchildren may not inherit at all. We didn’t under my grandmother’s because there were too many step and half grandchildren. She left it to the immediate children to sort out. This describes Peggy's situation to some degree especially if you throw great grandchildren into the mix, but her situation is additionally complicated by the fact that one of her children has already died (which she may not have foreseen when she wrote the will). There's also the possibility that there may not be much left after care home fees have been paid. Personally I would love it if Peggy had left some money to Emma towards a house deposit because she felt bad about being so awful to her when she went round the village asking for money. I realise this is vanishingly unlikely, but it would vindicate Emma's comments about Peggy's kindness and offer to help clear her room - also it's the only way Emma Grundy is ever going inherit anything.

Brefugee · 12/05/2025 10:05

i have just ignored the entirety of the Welsh-speaking thing because (also mother of bilingual children) i am very very acutely aware of the issues it throws up. Especially when what you need to do is Minority Language At Home.

So I'm pretending it's not happening

Can't wait for them ALL to fall flat on their faces when Peggy had a rething and left everything to Emma for being so helpful.

Bruisername · 12/05/2025 10:34

It would be difficult for them to have Natasha only speaking to the twins in Welsh only given it’s radio - especially as they get older

JudyCoolibar · 12/05/2025 10:47

but her situation is additionally complicated by the fact that one of her children has already died (which she may not have foreseen when she wrote the will).

It's virtually inconceivable that a solicitor drawing up the will wouldn't have raised this possibility with her and advised on steps to provide for it. The standard approach would be for Jenny's share to go to her children.

NetballHoop · 12/05/2025 10:49

I'm looking forward to some serious in-fighting over the inheritance which has probably been changed to give it all to Joy so that she can keep on appearing in every episode.

TottersBlithely · 12/05/2025 10:52

Doesn’t Natasha habitually drop Welsh terms of endearment into her conversations with Tom, or when she’s on the phone to her parents? So it’s natural she’ll do the same with her children?

Peggy leaving money to Emma would be an utterly splendid turn of events!

Gonners · 12/05/2025 11:22

Peggy leaving money to Emma would be an utterly splendid turn of events!

Especially if Emma (and Ed) fell out of a tree to their doom before they'd even been told about it, leaving no wills. George is 18 and could inherit his half immediately!
