Decent political podcasts

I'd love some analysis of current world politics. I'd rather not have anything partisan, but analysis from both sides.

Anyone got any recommendations?

My DH and DD1 both listen to the Rest is Politics with Rory Stewart and Alistair Campbell. They say it is great.

Neolara · 30/03/2025 16:40

The rest is politics. News Agents. Electoral Dysfunction.

sherbert83 · 30/03/2025 16:41

I like 'The Rest Is Politics' too. Also 'The News Agents' is pretty good

Sleepinggreyhounds · 30/03/2025 16:41

Strong Message Here is more about analysing and discussing the language used in politics but is excellent

Mielikki · 30/03/2025 16:44

TRIP with Rory Stewart and Alistair Campbell is great. And TRIP US with Katty Kay and Anthony Scaramucci - yes THAT Anthony Scaramucci who was Trump’s press secretary for 11 days - he’s hilarious.

Maitri108 · 30/03/2025 16:47

I've saved the Rest is Politics and will check out the others. TRIP also does a US edition which looks interesting. Many thanks

I don’t love the TRIP uk one after reading the thread about Rory Stewart claiming life in Afghanistan currently much better (has he rowed back from that yet, or do women who cannot speak, be seen, work, or get medical care still not matter?)

BUT, I am in love with katty Kay and scaramooch’s joint presenting style. Please no one come and tell me anything terrible about them yet.

KatzenRatzen · 30/03/2025 17:01

TRIP US is MUCH better than the UK one, which is extremely smug.

I wouldn't describe any of them as non-partisan.

jjeoreo · 30/03/2025 17:12

I used to listen to Talking Politics with David Runciman and when he stopped doing it was pretty bereft. But I just see he's doing another one called Past Present Future. Looks really good. I do like TRiP and TRiP US but prefer Rory and Alistairs "Leading" podcast as I find the focus on someone else more interesting.

GreyAreas · 30/03/2025 17:13

Americast is also better than Newscast imo.
I like electoral dysfunction but listen to it less since Harriet Harman joined because she has a different vibe and her delivery grates on me.

CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 30/03/2025 17:15

Hacks on Tap is great on US politics - presented by two veteran campaigners Mike Murphy and David Axelrod

CaveMum · 30/03/2025 17:21

I listen to the following political podcasts:

The Rest is Politics
The Rest is Politics US
Pod Save America (Ex Obama staffers giving their take on the garbage fire that is the Trump administration, though the pod has been going a few years)
Pod Save the World (US based but they cover a lot of world events from a US Democrat point of view)
Political Currency (George Osborne & Ed Balls)
Newscast (BBC)
Americast (BBC)

I’ve tried Pod Save the UK but I’m not a big fan of Nish Kumar, and they are very lefty whereas I’m a centrist so find them a bit too holier than thou a lot of the time.

Did you listen to the pod they put out of Katy driving Mooch’s Lambo? 🤣 I’m not a founding member so didn’t get the whole thing, but it was priceless.

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 30/03/2025 17:34

Political Currency is really good. Much better than I thought it would be. I like it at least as much as TRIP.

Ineffable23 · 30/03/2025 20:45

Newscast is technically news but it's got a chunky political slant. It's BBC and they do one every weeknight.

Bubbless31 · 30/03/2025 20:50

I like the truth in my opinion, by… someone. It’s on Spotify- it’s fun and interesting and informative, and only 6 minutes long a few times a week!

Did you just read the thread or listen to the actual episode?

Rory Stewart lost me on TRIP earlier this year when he described the grooming gangs as “men meeting girls in the park and paying for sex” rather than men raping groomed children too young to consent.

For a few years I’ve found their podcast lacking, it’s all quite superficial and self-congratulatory with a side of Alistair flogging whatever career/interest his children are trying to monetise.

Prefer Newsagents and recently I’ve gotten into Papercuts. The Chaser is an offbeat Australian podcast that is good for US issues.

Completely agree- they’re both appalling on anything to do with women while slapping each other on the back for being progressive. No thanks.

1664Ex · 31/03/2025 08:57

I love Rory Stewart. I thought he was a bit of a nob and plug ugly until I started listening to TRIP but now I love him. I want to snog his big clever lips.

CurlewKate · 31/03/2025 08:59

All of the above.And….
The Two Matts. Politics at Sam and Anne’s. What Most People Think. Where Politics Meets History. How to Win an Election. Oh God, What Now? Pod Save the UK. Political Currency.

Lyannaa · 31/03/2025 09:31

The Rest Is Politics - Alistair Campbell and Rory Stewart

I was going to say this too - it's excellent. Very funny yet very informative. Helen Lewis is so articulate and well informed it's an education to listen to her.

Sandysandyfeet · 24/06/2025 18:32

I used to love TRIP and newsagents but there is a bit too much subtle misogyny and a creeping sense of ‘aren’t we amazing’, especially on TRP. Love Emily Matlis though. Strong message is fab, also love Helen Lewis.

Maybe you should listen to Pod Save the UK if you don’t agree with Nish and Coco? That’s why I listen to What Most People Think….
