Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd be happy sharing a hot tub with Mucky Mick, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

The title started life with @JanglyBeads, whose autocorrect turned 'Oh no, nor do I!' into 'Oh no, nododo I!' on the last thread. For reasons of cowardice/prudence/lack of inspiration and the character limit, I haven't included @BeaLola's even more mysterious autocorrect - her phone had her asking Abdul if he'd always wanted children instead of Neil. Grin Perhaps one of the mooted beavers can be Abdul.

For the first time ever I've added a poll to the OP. Over to you!

She knows the eleven herbs and spices in KFC

😂

Is there any hope for Ben and Chelsea? because I'm pretty much tapped out after 40 years of listening now

I still want to know who is doing all the cooking at the tea room. Are we to assume some other completely untrained and unqualified random person has stepped up and none of the customers has noticed I so agree @Godesstobe. This is an excellent storyline which has just fallen by the wayside. Who is producing all the cakes now Fallon has gone? How can there be no fall out? Are we just going to stay away from the tearoom until the SWs think we’ve all forgotten about the previous drama? It’s so disappointing.

Plus shouldn't Fallon and Plod's mortgage provider be chucking them out by now - given the angst there was about the impossibility of 2 people living on a police sergeant's pay?

BeaLola · 06/01/2025 01:34

I'm amazed Tracey has relevant catering experience apart from feeding the Horrobin clan let alone relevant hygiene certification.

As for Ruth casually deciding that Leonard could be a permanent fixture (btw why has his son not returned for a flying visit to see poorly Father ?), well let him move in , Jill die and younger man Leonard carry on ...

Ficklemind · 06/01/2025 05:27

I think that's simply it. Leonard has been useful around Brookfield and is good company, Jill passes on, R and D worry for a while about whether Leonard stays living with them, they agree he can, which then causes difficulties in the not so distant future.
I was looking forward to a possible visit from Leonard's son, Simon, from Singapore.

Ficklemind · 06/01/2025 05:40

Hoping we hear more of Jazzer soon, he is essential on Burns night!

Nettleteaser101 · 06/01/2025 06:04

So it didn't take long for Kahil to spill the beans, so now kirsty and Roy will get the sack because they were so stupid to involve a young boy they hardly know. Well it will serve them right.
Can't believe that the bull restaurant will just serve up is just great chips. As if they wouldn't think of Fallon instead of Tracey what another stupid story line.

JoelenesParrot · 06/01/2025 08:37

As if they wouldn't think of Fallon instead of Tracey what another stupid story line.

Agree- and even if they had ended up in this ridiculous situation, J would have just said to T ‘oh I’m sorry- you caught us on the hop. I’m afraid we’re going to get Fallon to cover instead’ and T would just understand it made sense and back off immediately. T churning out her legendary chips is not the same as doing a pub lunch roast on a Sunday. And I absolutely shudder at the thought of Hawaiian night and all those pineapples! Especially in January…

Beavers have been brought back in Ealing!
https://beavertrust.org/ealing-beaver-project-the-journey-to-bring-beavers-back-to-central-london/
But there aren’t too many farmers to annoy round here.

I personally remember the 20 minute slots and would swear to it!

Re Khalil — both elements of the latest storyline are so implausible. Both that Rex and Kirsty would tell him all about their (implausible) plan and that he would randomly wander over to Brookfield for research on his English essay. I know lots of teenagers and not one of them would go to such lengths.

Talking of loose ends do we know the outcome of Mick's complaint re Emma and the parish council?

Joy too has said that she and Rochelle's father split up, I think, and at the BBC website page on her at https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/profiles/3tYCTrxJq0f2TLmt8RkN2tR/joy-horville it says that "Joy laments that she’s “never got the hang of cooking for one” after splitting up from her husband."

Edited

Sorry, I don’t think I articulated my thought very well. It wasn’t the splitting up so much as Joy’s subsequent breakdown. I thought it was quite cruel of Rochelle to tell (Rex? Kirsty?) about it. Was it a lie or is she just cruel? Joy is very concerned about Rochelle being in Ambridge and seems almost afraid of her; is this because she has a shady past that she thinks R will reveal, or is R the one with the shady past? Does she have a problem with compulsive lying, eg? She does seem manipulative. In short, I’m not sure I’d believe a word she says.

I don’t care about this as much as it appears I do, honest 🙈.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 06/01/2025 09:16

In the real world an employee would have to negotiate the time off; possibly even sourcing cover for the absence as an inducement for agreement. How handy Wayne has a daughter who is the perfect candidate.

Bruisername · 06/01/2025 09:29

What’s ridiculous is that Wayne himself didn’t suggest Fallon. And after the convo Tracey and Fenton had about Wayne’s cooking being so amazing that was surely ridiculous to think Tracey could just step in

as for Khalil - his essay was a lie to cover up his questions surely? Seems incredibly odd otherwise

so David is going to confront Justin and Kirsty will get the sack? Or Justin will stick two fingers up at David and tell Kirsty to do it the right way?

sigh, the sw really do think we’re stupid

MereDintofPandiculation · 06/01/2025 09:34

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 05/01/2025 20:30

Thanks for that. I can cope with actor photos as I’m one of those odd people who doesn’t visualise faces when listening to things.

No, I don’t either. Or when I’m reading. So things like Wolf Hall on tv help me distinguish the Surreys and Suffolks and Sussexes when I’m reading Tudor history

Molecule · 06/01/2025 09:34

Tracey as chef is utterly ridiculous. Our village pub was, for a short time, run by the village. Local outside catering lady did the cheffing. She’s an extremely competent cook, the person you go to for a funereal tea or a shooting lunch. She said it was a nightmare. Without training getting four different meals out at the same time was so difficult, then immediately followed by six - it was unrelentingly stressful.

Jolene and Kenton have been involved in hospitality for years - no matter how thick they are they will know they need a properly trained chef (or at least Fallon with some experience).

Bruisername · 06/01/2025 09:41

but the sw are such clever and competent people - they would be able to take over running a kitchen, or doing the professional drone shots for a charging station, or perform heart surgery etc etc without needing anything more than a quick google

He’s not poorly, he’s got a temporary relatively minor injury. He’s fit and active for his age. Why would his son make an unplanned trip halfway round the world?

Bruisername · 06/01/2025 09:43

Are Jill and Leonard sharing a room? I can’t imagine that being very comfortable on the long term but may have been fun for a couple of weeks.

MereDintofPandiculation · 06/01/2025 09:46

Re Khalil — both elements of the latest storyline are so implausible. Both that Rex and Kirsty would tell him all about their (implausible) plan and that he would randomly wander over to Brookfield for research on his English essay. I know lots of teenagers and not one of them would go to such lengths. To be fair, Khalil had been hanging around overhearing their every word. They just filled in the details. But I’m surprised he was such a bad liar. School is such a good training ground.

Is Ealing really central London?

Gonners · 06/01/2025 10:06

😉Ealing is in Central London in very much the same way that Wimbledon and Walthamstow are.

EalingW13 · 06/01/2025 10:29

Ahh ok if Khalil was lying about the essay that makes more sense… I think…

Missed that quote about Ealing being central London too. Lol. Greetings from the badlands.

LillianGish · 06/01/2025 10:35

Thanks so much for the beaver link @EalingW13. As a former Ealing resident (W13 then W5) I was fascinated to read about that project though @MereDintofPandiculation is quite right, it's not central London in fact Paradise Fields is in Greenford so not even central Ealing. Pretty impressive nonetheless and surely what rewilding is all about - bringing a bit of proper countryside to places where there isn't much. I don't see the point of it so much in somewhere like Ambridge which is entirely rural anyway.

RegimentalSturgeon · 06/01/2025 11:24

We know how it’s going to go at The Bull, don’t we. Tracy will try something daft and ambitious, with hilariously disastrous consequences. Then Jolene and Kenton will need to do some exaggerated grovelling to get Fallon to step in, and she will, and it will be A Triumph. Because obviously what you want when you go for a pub meal is a frodding marmalade cake.
Hanche de castor, façon Ambridgienne, coming soon?

SaffyRosie · 06/01/2025 11:25

Yep, more 3rd rate plots and writing from the SWs .
TA really is now just a 2nd rate soap.
