Any Elis and John fans on here?

Just that, really. I don’t use Facebook so I’m not in the Elis and John FB group, although it sounds like a really lovely community. I’ve been listening since lockdown and my kids like the odd Shame Well, but I don’t know anyone IRL who listens.

I’ve got a ticket to the live show and I’m SO happy about it, because I couldn’t get to see Howl last year. Their podcast has made me laugh and feel less alone in some incredibly dark times. I love how open and honest John in particular is about his struggles, and how kind and warm they are with each other. I wasn’t sure about the shift away from live radio at first, but now I think it’s better and they seem more relaxed (presumably because it can be edited).

Anyway, I love em and want to share the joy with someone else!

Me! And my DH! They are awesome and my 14 year old is a fan too. We all got tickets. The FB group is ok but it's not all hearts and flowers. You're not missing much.

Ah, ok. I'm glad I'm not missing much on Fb. Thanks for replying! Glad you got tickets too.

I'm not a fan but my DH is and we saw Howl together, which I did really enjoy. He is part of the FB group and insists it is a lovely supportive community but some of the posts on there would put the Mumsnet vipers to shame!

He's stopped reading out the Shame Well stories to me because I keep pointing out the inconsistencies in them and the fact they're mostly all clearly made up/heavily embellished 😂.

MagpiePi · 29/11/2024 15:46

I'm a fan and not on FB.
I saw Howl and found it a quite hard going at times, but I can empathise with a lot of John's struggles.

I didn't get to see Howl but I bought it on Bandcamp. Thought it was excellent and wish I could have seen it live, which is why I so badly wanted to get a ticket for the live show this year. I don't miss Shame Well on the new podcast as my kids used to make me pause it to explain what was happening as most of it went over their head, but they still wanted to know what was going on...😆

Oh god, me too. Alcohol's not my thing but so much of what he says resonates, even if I deal with it in other (unhealthy) ways. I bought his other shows in the Bandcamp bundle but haven't listened yet as I haven't been in a good place and wanted to keep things light for a while. That said, I find John's openness incredibly helpful and genuinely inspiring.

I love them!! The antics of Elis, John (and his bum procedures) and Dave make me so happy. The podcast is a thing of wonder and delight. Personally I'm glad they've dropped the Round the World in 80 Daves because I found it a bit boring but I'm loving the Cymru Connection and Elis' frustration is extremely funny.
Very jealous that you'll be seeing them live. Enjoy!

MagpiePi · 30/11/2024 07:41

I listen to the podcasts when I am running on the treadmill at the gym, and some of the 'spooooky bum procedure' chat has had me laughing out loud.

roycroppersshopper · 30/11/2024 13:26

I like it too! I started listening in lockdown, listened to the full back catalogue. I don't think the podcast is as good as the live show.

I couldn't stand the DI Robbins thing, so had to fast forward through that. I loved the shame well though, even if it was a bit fanciful.

I don't like it when John goes a bit rogue. When I first listened I was unsure of him. Now I really like him. He clearly has (undiagnosed?) ADHD, he has a lot the traits (self loathing, talkative, obsessions, addiction issues, needing to be right, RSD etc). I have it too and recognise the worst bits of me in him!

I tried to watch his award winning Edinburgh show, can't remember the name, on Netflix but I really struggled and had to turn it off, it was too stressful. Is Howl really good?

greenbirds · 30/11/2024 13:33

Me! I didn't like them a few years ago but over the last year have really warmed to them. Some of the 'spooky bum procedure' chat recently has been fantastic and they bring a smile to my face whenever I listen.

They do talk about 'bloke-y' stuff like football, cricket etc but they are also very open (and funny) about more serious topics which is very refreshing. I always look forward to listening.

I’d say Howl isn’t really a stand up, laugh a minute show; it gets quite dark as John talks about his past and present mental states, but it is very engaging and there are a few funny moments.

That was my take, too. Some really funny sections, but all of it was threaded with something quite painful. I'm glad I listened and it was a brilliant show, but not one to listen to if you want straightforwardly cheering up.

I've loved the spooooky bum procedure chat (ironic given how horrific it's clearly all been for JJR).

I also love the Cymru connection.

But most of all I love how much they all clearly like/love each other.

I really used to like their show on the Radio on a Friday afternoon...very non-Radio 5, I thought.

And the film show with Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode afterwards.

But both those shows disappeared to somewhere else, so I stopped listening.

I don't know where they go, but I assume they get offered more money and go somewhere else.

Does it really work for them, though? More cash, but no longer on the BBC - I assume their listenership and exposure goes down.

I'm old fashioned, so...but the world of podcasts etc - there's just so much crap to wade through that I don't get involved....so Elis and John lost to me unfortunately but I did enjoy them for a while.

They're still very much on the BBC but not live - you can find them on the BBC Sounds app without having to wade through much at all, but I totally get that podcasts aren't for everyone.

Thanks for the reply...yep, I just like thew wider knowledge and availability thing...Elis and John on the proper radio...other ppl experiencing it at the same time - mainstream broadcast culture.

Narrowcast algorythm targeting...no good to me. Leads to the echo-chamber mentality, I think.

Drove my boy somewhere the other day - he's listening to god-knows-what on his EarPods (that I would never have got my children, but a higher-power over ruled) while I have Ebony Rainford Brent on DID.

My bit of serendipity for the day - his dose? None.

A lovely, bright, charming, empathetic, young lad - who only ever receives what he chooses to.

On my watch.

A poor show by me...

He tells me he's selling his gaming PC. Ace! Except he's just upgrading it for Christmas. Not my decision, but...populism wins...

He'll realise when it's all too late...

It would be better for him if he didn't realise, tbh...but he's a bright lad - he will...and it'll be another generation gone...

Hey ho!

Now then, where were we? Made up games!!!...
