Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that Clive sounds deeply misunderstood, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Fete over, cricket season over - can the Flower and Produce show be far behind? I don't think I've heard a mention of it this year. Have I not been paying attention?

In any real village, preparations for the Christmas show would already be under way, but not in Ambridge, of course. I am probably in a minority of one in regretting this.

With any luck, though, by Christmas this incredibly protracted tale of Alice, George and the crash will be behind us at last. Do we think Clive's really gone? I don't believe it. We won't be rid of him that easily. Will he go to the police himself? Will he attempt to blackmail his family or extort money from the Aldridges in return for information that would secure Alice's acquittal? Do we care? I find I don't really, unfortunately. I did enjoy hearing Clive for those few brief exchanges but I've had enough now. Unrelieved nastiness is not really what I want from TA.

Over to you!

Also, is Xander the first child to go to school ever? He’d have been knackered on his first day as well.

After his first day he was spark out earlier than Adam and Ian had expected and they remarked that he must be exhausted.

Gonners · 05/09/2024 20:39

Angus Stobie is a cracking good actor (and extremely easy on the eye too!) so I wonder if he needs to disappear for a while for other work.

No. Have you forgotten 2nd cousin once removed Rosie?

Flowers I do hope things pick up soon. Can't have been easy listening.

Oddly enough there was an incident near us today involving a hot pursuit, police car rammed when the criminal reversed into it at speed and then fled by driving down the pavement clipping cars as he went. The area has been heaving with police ever since. Clearly damage to one of their own vehicles is the thing that gets them out in force. (Admittedly we don't know what his original suspected offence was.)

Something similar near us yesterday. It took place at the entrance to the local bit of forest so also included spooked horses interrupting our game of pooh sticks and police taking a loooong time to search bushes very methodically (I guess for either a weapon or drugs) while I struggled to ride a bike around them up a steep hill. Fair play to them, the police were very nice about lifting my bike and my toddler's over the low fence (since they had shut off the level access) whilst still keeping the handcuffed man under guard. There were plenty of officers going spare.

Rosie and Xander = 3rd cousins I think

I was in Buckinghamshire the other day but the works I saw were probably HS2Nowhere.

The signs aren't HS2, but EWR.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 05/09/2024 21:15

Gawd. Most people wouldn't know they had third cousins, let alone ever have met them!

Xander is Adam's son, Adam was Jennifer's son, Jennifer was Jack Archer's daughter, Jack Archer was Dan's son.

Rosie is Pip's daughter, Pip is David's daughter, David was Phil's son, Phil was Dan's son.

I thought there must be a generation difference, but Adam having a child so late in life has evened things up.

Oh I know, I just mean all the focus on it.

I had completely managed to forget Pip while I was counting generations on my fingers!

If I knew how, I would teach you all this trick.

Excellent episode and although Alice merited a brief mention I was surprised that Christopher wasn't discussed at all.

Gonners · 05/09/2024 21:35

Arf! In my world, anyone beyond a first cousin is no describable relation.

JanFebAndOnwards · 05/09/2024 21:37

Arf indeed at the idea of the knock being Clive come to pick up his yoga mat…..

Also did neither member of Involved Dads Inc really not attend the inevitable new parents Open Evening nor bring X to any settling in days when they assuredly would have been told about the Sheep Gate et al??

Susan mentioned Christopher locking onto the cider bottle

JanFebAndOnwards · 05/09/2024 21:39

Sorry, double neg tripping me up there.

yes I also momentarily imagined what it would feel like turning my son in. I was also pregnant at the same time as Emma but with his big sister, who was born a month after George.

KeepBritainTidy · 05/09/2024 21:53

@muddyford , Were they? Didn't look at them closely, but I don't see why EWR would be in that part of Buckinghamshire.

Bruisername · 05/09/2024 21:58

I wonder if they will call Chris asap

RegimentalSturgeon · 05/09/2024 22:00

how proud and excited she was to find herself connected by marriage to the Aldridge’s. And now look what it’s brought to her family

Bwahahahaha! Delicious, isn’t it?
(Who was the bigger snob, Susan or Jennifer?)

Jennifer.

Her closing line of one episode still makes me snort laughing when I think of it:

"oh Brian! I'm related to a Horrobin!"

<tum te tum te tum te tum>

echt · 05/09/2024 22:11

Excellent episode tonight, and while I see the SWs feel the need for a variety of expression, Neil needs to dial down on the Old Testament wrath mode.

KeepBritainTidy · 05/09/2024 22:18

"Good grief, Brian, I'm related to a Horrobin" IIRC.

I know many of my third cousins. There are too many of them for them to be treated as cousins but there's an awareness that we are related.

TonightMatthewIamgoingtobecher · 05/09/2024 22:48

It is truly baffling that at no point have the Grundy's sought legal advice. It really does seem the case that they have nobody to advocate for them . There's no way if that was Ruari, Brian wouldn't pay for the best legal advice. I know Alice is being difficult so she's an exception to the rule.

TottersBlanklyIntoThePhysicGarden · 05/09/2024 22:58

It’s not their world … They don’t pay other people for services (except the vet); they scrabble to find money to feed themselves. And lawyers are punishing expensive. (I know, I used to be one.)

So if a lawyer is to be paid I guess it will be Carters Snr who pay for her …

Jack was Dans brother. Oner than that you’re right, so Jennifer and Phil were first cousins, Adam and David second cousins, Pip and Xander are third cousins which makes Rosie and Xander third cousins once removed.

JanFebAndOnwards · 05/09/2024 23:15

Tbh it hadn’t occurred to me that they should be seeking legal advice.

Actually, sorry , I’m wrong. Thinking about it, Jack was Phil’s brother not his uncle, so you were absolutely right and yes Xander and Rosie are third cousins.
