Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd have been delighted with a hand-painted squirrel tray for your 40th, as shown below, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

All I have to say about current storylines for now is that I want the George Alice crash stuff to come to a resolution, sooner rather than later, and I also want to hear very little indeed of Alistair, Denise and Paul maundering on. More of Jakob would be very welcome. His brother can come back any time too.

I now declare this thread open for business!

but we know Susan didn’t tell Emma about Chris confronting Harry so perhaps she’s had a character transplant.

I thought Joy and Susan didn’t get on?

Apparently I've a tarted listening again. So I'm back

I don't believe that either Joy or Susan is capable of sharing space in the shop with the other and not gossiping, whether they are bosom buddies or not.

WorriedRelative · 17/08/2024 16:04

Hasn't Brad already said he is going to Felpersham uni so he can stay at home?

Daft really, he could have found a decent uni close enough to have come home every weekend if he wanted but to give a taste of university life.

ILikeMaths · 17/08/2024 16:08

Choccyp1g · 16/08/2024 19:21

Yay!! Brad got 4 A stars. I presume double maths physics and chemistry.

He's my kind of student, too. Well done, him.

From here, assuming FM people took Maths at the same time (because I can't find the numbers of people who took it earlier, which happens in some schools), 18082/107427 or about
16.8% of students who took A level Maths also took F Maths.
I don't think that's a small percentage, and 18082 is not "hardly anybody" in my opinion.

RegimentalSturgeon · 17/08/2024 16:10

I thought it was ‘hardly anybody’ who got an A* in FM, not who took it at all.

47 years since I got my A level results. The day Elvis died.

Me too! How time flies!

moggerhanger · 17/08/2024 16:56

Thanks for the new thread! I've finally caught up after being away on hols. George's straw-clutching caused me to yelp "ARE YOU ON METH YOU TWIT!" at parkrun earlier today, causing a few sideways glances.

The fact a bottle of cider was found in the car is hardly scintillating news. I don't see any reason for assuming that Joy must know about it.

Although it's ironic, given that Alice, being consistently vile and obnoxious, was obnoxious to Joy in the shop, that Joy might turn out to be her saviour.

Gonners · 17/08/2024 16:58

@ILikeMaths 18082/107427 or about 16.8% of students who took A level Maths also took F Maths.

Gosh, that's very nearly 7 out of 10! 😇

Exactly. That's far more worth mentioning than the empty cider bottle.

I think the SWs are holding this back until Joy is in the witness box and drops a bomb shell about who bought what.

16.8% is about 1 in 6. (puzzled)

(1 in 6 is 16.6....%)

RegimentalSturgeon · 17/08/2024 16:10

I thought it was ‘hardly anybody’ who got an A* in FM, not who took it at all.

Apologies.

According to this page 28.7% of all students who took F Maths A level in 2024 got A star.

28.7% of 18082 is just under 5200. (5190 to 3sf)

{According to that page almost 50% of students who took F Maths in 2021 were awarded an A star. (40.6% in 2022). That will mean it's difficult to correlate degree classification with FM grade for a few years.}

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 17/08/2024 21:03

I can't recall if anyone has asked here; if they have I will ask again.

Alice is absolutely sure she did not drive her car from the layby in Heydon Wood to the bridge where it was involved in an accident. How does she think it got there? Unless it drove itself, someone else must have driven it; why is she not curious about who it was?

That would be the first question I would ask once I had eliminated myself, on whatever evidence or none at all.

JanglyBeads · 17/08/2024 21:07

Yes it is strange that we haven't heard her or anyone else voicing questions about who on earth else could have driven the car (with Alice unconscious in it) if not Alice.

Bruisername · 17/08/2024 21:16

Yes that has been discussed and it is very perplexing that she seems to think she can turn up in court and just say she’s sure she wouldn’t have driven. And she shows no curiosity as to what happened - I’m amazed no one has considered that there was only one person there without a car. This feels like the Helen sl all over - promising start and then ends by jumping the shark

Population of UK: 67 million. I believe currently STEM subjects are surging in popularity at both A level or equivalent and at degree level, so Brad is on trend. Even so, I'd hazard a guess that only a small minority of Britons have A level Maths, never mind FM.

@IdaPrentice - quick Google suggests fruit ciders cover ciders made or flavoured with various berries, as distinct from a traditional cider with just apples in it. It sounds more like an alcopop - are they still a thing?

Coincidentally, DS commented today that WKD was no longer as available as it used to be

I thought Will's ploy to get him alone in the car and talk him down from interrupting the hypnosis was a good one. Obviously he should really be encouraging him to confess.

He did go on to do that, didn’t he? After he’d talked him down.

yesmen · 18/08/2024 08:09

Alice is driving me mad at the moment...

Brefugee · 18/08/2024 12:22

Alice always drives me mad and makes my slapping hand twitch. Emma and William are also causing my slapping hand issues keeping still.

George? him i want someone to give him a good shake. If he goes to prison he's going to come out a worse misogynist than he already is.

Paul is also a brat who i can't stand to listen to. I don't know how i got back listening again given how much it's all irritated me this week.

One more comment: can they please shoehorn more about countryside littering in. I don't think we've got the message yet.

Madcats · 18/08/2024 12:35

DD(17) and her friends went through a fruit cider phase (pretty short lived). Koppaberg comes in a variety of flavours and is widely available.

A level Further Maths tends to be a "by invitation" A level at a lot of schools (not sure how it works at colleges). Many students will also take Computer Science along with Physics or some sort of language.

I've missed big chunks of the past month and was hoping that Paul had flounced off the scene. Hey ho.

I seem to remember you had to be in the top stream for A Level maths and be doing physics to be accepted on to Further Maths.

If I were to be let loose in Ambridge with a large wet fish there would be much slapping.

I've spent quite a bit of time today booking stuff for a trip. No wonder nobody in Ambridge ever goes on holiday. What a faff.
