Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd have been delighted with a hand-painted squirrel tray for your 40th, as shown below, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

All I have to say about current storylines for now is that I want the George Alice crash stuff to come to a resolution, sooner rather than later, and I also want to hear very little indeed of Alistair, Denise and Paul maundering on. More of Jakob would be very welcome. His brother can come back any time too.

I now declare this thread open for business!

UnintentionalArcher
I haven’t read most of the recent threads so this question might already have been asked, but is Paul meant to be about 27? Not sure where I got that number from and his age isn’t given on the BBC TA character page, but all I could think about his response to Denistair was ‘how immature’.

At the time of Josh's birthday last year Paul said he was 23. That was when he was bossily organising Josh's life for him in the car on the way home from a meal at Brookfield on 10th September 2023.

The synopsis for that day says "Paul wants to know what the matter is with him, and Josh tells him that it's the idea of being twenty-six, closer to thirty than twenty; Paul is only twenty-three."

Is George going to go for a 'dead women do no hypnotherapy' solution to the Yasmin problem?

I assume you mean wipe out Alice, rather than the presumably non-NHS Yasmin? Because now that Alice has (implausibly) started to remember, despite no actual hypnosis being involved, she can just get herself into a relaxed state (bottoms up, Alice!) and complete the job.

WitcheryDivine · 16/08/2024 20:22

Checking in to new thread

TeenToTwenties · 16/08/2024 20:27

Came on here to check Brad's results. Well done him!

(Thanks for the thread @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g )

So, is that it? Is that the point of all the litter? A really awkwardly acted PSA?

I wonder how Lovell and/or James have found out about Alistair and Denise - John? Paul? Jakob???

I was assuming it had to be Paul, and he's feeling guilty, hence the volte face with Alistair.

He sounded to me more as though he wanted to get rid of Yasmin, a woman he doesn't know and who isn't a real person to him. He'd dim enough to imagine that without her Alice won't be able to 'recover' any memories.

Gonners · 16/08/2024 20:50

Oh well, listeners have no particular feelings about Yasmin (who, being a friend of Kate's, may well be a charlatan) so if George gets a life sentence for murdering her then he may well plead fear of a driving ban in mitigation, thus exonerating Alice. No, I haven't spent any time thinking this through!

Isthisexpected · 16/08/2024 21:24

Gonners · 16/08/2024 10:02

@LillianGish He (and Paul and Denise for that matter) have effortlessly defined roles in Ambridge without dragging out this other tedium.

I would quite like Paul and Denise to have their roles effortlessly "redefined" to those of people who used to be involved in the village but have gone away, nobody knows where, never to be heard of again. Within a month, someone could ask "Whatever happened to Denise?" which would prompt the reply "Who?"

I'd love this. I'm finding the whole thing so tedious now. Of course he abused his position of power. It's blatantly obvious that if their affair ends his subordinate and her son will feel they have to quit for a start. The whole thing just grates on me. I don't want to hear of an adult man accepting his father's been cheated on just a couple of weeks later. It just doesn't ring true in the slightest.

More animal drama less draaaaama.

DeanElderberry · 16/08/2024 21:39

yes, but happy-ending 'make a thingy out of baler twine so I can extract the crisp packet from Sillyname's cheek' drama, not very-upsetting poor dead cat drama.

DadDadDad · 16/08/2024 21:57

A-star in Further Maths - that's my kind of guy. Funnily enough, one of my fellow maths students in the year above me at college is now a professor at Newcastle Uni (something in medical statistics I think).

Yesterday, I suggested something along the lines of "George and Will will find out about the hypnotherapy and panic". As soon as Emma said to them "don't panic but..." I knew my words were coming true!

Yawn.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 16/08/2024 22:45

Yay for Brad and his 4 A-stars!

I have absolutely no idea what George thought he was going to do with Yasmin and Alice - Will was quite right, burst into the room and...what? Tell Alice not to go remembering stuff? Will seems to be slowly talking him round to handing himself in.

Marseillaise · 16/08/2024 23:34

It slightly amused me when Mia had apparently claimed that very few people get A in Further Maths - because by chance I saw a table today showing Further Maths had the highest proportion of As out of every subject. To be fair, that's presumably because only people who are seriously good at Maths take Further Maths in the first place, but still ...

JanglyBeads · 16/08/2024 23:47

I did feel some sympathy for George tonight, who among us wouldn't be terrified of going to prison, esp with whatever it was that Freddie has told him?

The only incentive apart from doing the right thing and 'getting it off his chest' to be offered is own up now and you'll get a lesser penalty than if you try and hide the truth longer/further. The truth will come out somehow. You'll be cross examined in court by the best barrister Brian can afford.

JanglyBeads · 16/08/2024 23:50

@DadDadDad is Newcastle especially good for Maths? I wonder whether Brad is a Pure or Applied kind of guy. Not sure.

Hercisback · 17/08/2024 00:07

Thanks for the new thread. Listened to the last 7 episodes tonight.
The crash storyline needs concluding soon, fed up of the drama. It's obvious what George should do. I hope Alice remembers everything.
Paul did a remarkable about turn on his opinion of Alistare. Will Paul defend Alistare to LJ boss?

I don't really know. I don't think it's in the very top tier. Surprising with those grades that he didn't go for Warwick especially as it can't be too far from Ambridge. Presumably, he didn't try for Oxbridge because (in his mind) that's too posh.

IdaPrentice · 17/08/2024 00:25

I've been waiting for what seems a lifetime for Joy to remember that she sold George the fruit cider (does non-fruit cider exist?)

DadDadDad · 17/08/2024 00:30

@IdaPrentice - quick Google suggests fruit ciders cover ciders made or flavoured with various berries, as distinct from a traditional cider with just apples in it. It sounds more like an alcopop - are they still a thing?
