Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd have been delighted with a hand-painted squirrel tray for your 40th, as shown below, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

All I have to say about current storylines for now is that I want the George Alice crash stuff to come to a resolution, sooner rather than later, and I also want to hear very little indeed of Alistair, Denise and Paul maundering on. More of Jakob would be very welcome. His brother can come back any time too.

I now declare this thread open for business!

Round and round and round they go, round and round and round. The phase of the moon has to be right, and Jupiter aligned with Mars, before they can stop.

That’s kind of what mansplaining is though. A belief that his opinion and ‘wisdom’ is the right answer

Harsh. Brad is nice, not a mansplainer, though I'd have loved to have his mathematical explanation about the odds regarding a near-death experience. It would be like The Big Bang Theory, with something maths/science-y in every episode.

Godesstobe · 27/08/2024 23:17

Brad's A level results have clearly gone to his head and he now thinks he is an expert on everything.

OnlyFrench · 27/08/2024 23:33

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime was this the same Sharon who was John Archer's girlfriend?

WagnersFourthSymphony · 27/08/2024 23:45

One of the many things I don't understand about the Clive character is that he's supposed to be a plumber, a genuine tradie, so you'd think he could earn a decent living by doing what he's trained for. Lord love us, they charge enough, don't they!

EBearhug · 28/08/2024 00:55

Difficult when you're not available to work because you're in prison, though.

Devilsadvocat · 28/08/2024 05:08

, I wouldn't tell Justin anything.

He was only going to show that having had one near-death experience in the past has no bearing on whether or not you have another near-death experience in the future. With dice. So, e.g. your chance of rolling a 6 on your second throw with a fair die is always 1 in 6 regardless of whether you rolled a 6 or any other number on your first roll. And it goes on being 1 in 6 for each subsequent roll (the probability of them all being sixes is different).

I thought the vegan bubble had burst? I read an article a couple of months ago saying the number of vegan meat substitutes on supermarket shelves had dropped, and M&S seems to have stopped doing its vegan sponge cake

I think it’s more complicated than that. I happened to notice this on The G this morning. (Processed plant-based meat alternatives still healthier and more environmentally friendly than meat and market share globally predicted to grow until 2030). https://www.theguardian.com/business/article/2024/aug/28/plant-based-meat-alternatives-environment-nutrition. I only ever eat a processed veggie/vegan burger myself a couple of times a year when eating out but thought this was interesting - though I haven’t looked at the study so don’t know about scale and methodology.

I’ve heard of a few cafes and restaurants switching from purely vegan or veggie to vegan/veggie-friendly, but the hospitality industry has struggled so much recently post-Covid/Brexit and with cost of living that I imagine that would be hard to attribute that to a drop in demand - I think it’s perhaps more likely to be a case of those establishments already targeting a smaller market share being the ones who suffer the most or first.

I think it would be interesting to hear Fallon opening a vegan establishment- whether the demand is there in Ambridge, as someone else has mentioned, would be interesting to see. I do think there are lots of non-vegan people who are quite happy to eat vegan products as long as they taste good, however. Perhaps with something as specific as a cream cake people will want the real thing (I’m the same with pizza - I haven’t found a convincing vegan cheese yet, which is one reason I’m veggie, not vegan), but with lots of vegan cakes, you can’t tell the difference.

Plant-based meat alternatives are eco-friendlier and mostly healthier, study finds

Food Foundation’s study notes that some processed ‘alternative protein’ products have high levels of salt

Fink · 28/08/2024 05:37

Me neither.

I agree. Fallon is a fool to blab her intentions to the crafty, calculating old goat, whose brain cells could be heard clicking into action with a BUSINESS PLAN to steal her ideas, bid for one of the charging-station units and install his beloved Carlotta as the manageress.

Why, why does everyone so meekly obey the appalling Justin's orders? He’s sold his own wife down the river for a business deal so he’d rip off anyone else without breaking a sweat.

Oh, and the George 'drama' is beyond pitiful now. Just put it out of its misery FGS.

TottersBlanklyIntoThePhysicGarden · 28/08/2024 08:26

Do you mean Lilian?

Because she and Justin are not married.

(And I do worry for her occasionally.)

JanglyBeads · 28/08/2024 08:35

Only ever been one Sharon in Ambridge, yes.

Yes I have no idea why Fallon blabbed her business plan to Justin, or anyone really. Mad.

His virtual wife, if you prefer. The person who's supposed to be his life partner but whom he treats as a rival most of the time.

Indeed. Arrogant little twerp. All he needed to say was it's individual one off incidents which can happen again.

Bruisername · 28/08/2024 08:47

But surely that’s not true and if you are an arsonist, for example, the chances of having a near death experience more than once are higher than if you are, say, an accountant

i think Fallon had a head injury during the accident which has turned her into a total idiot

I thought that was because he was so excited about the maths of it and thought other people would be too rather than arrogance.

Bruisername · 28/08/2024 08:49

Is this them trying to show Brad has no emotional intelligence (despite the fact he has shown it many times before)?

if sassy cassie ends up being a cricket superstar who Alastair trains up to play for England I will definitely be hurling the radio at the nearest sw

George Barford. To split a hair, he was 69 when Clive hit him from behind and then laid into him with his boots while George was on the ground; Will turned up and frightened Clive off by possibly being able to recognise him.

On that occasion Clive was eventually caught because he couldn't resist stealing George's very recognisable watch, and then giving it to his ex-girlfriend Sharon, who lived in Ambridge and wore it there, of course. Christine identified it. Sharon was shocked and horrified, though not as much as she was when Clive was later discovered also to have set fire to George's house, while Christine and Jill were in it overnight and George was not.

The Keith Barn Fire was in the main programme, and happened late in the night of Wednesday 11th July, 2012's episode, and continued in the early hours of 12th and the following episode

Clive is 52 this year according to BBC

There's no maths involved in it.

Statistics is a branch of maths, and very poorly understood in the UK.

Brad's A level results have clearly gone to his head and he now thinks he is an expert on everything.

Don’t all teenagers think they are an expert on everything? There’s a quote on the lines “when I went to university, I was appalled at my father’s ignorance. When I returned, I was astonished at how much he’d learned in the intervening three years”

And moral questions seem very clear cut at that age.

Atichen · 28/08/2024 09:06

Bit delayed but re George calling Clive..... you can make calls (phone or video) over Facebook messenger if your friends no need for phone numbers I think

And given how much Clive has influenced George I assume Emma think clive would twost it "i dont really mean it, its just the only way i can stay close to protect you"etc and George would believe it

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 28/08/2024 09:12

Were kids getting called Clive in 1972?

I know one Clive who was born around 1967. Running the name through a search of my professional body of which around 6,500 are men, this Clive is the only result.

LillianGish · 28/08/2024 09:16

I can only assume @DadDadDad is on holiday with his failure pop up during a stats discussion.
