The Invitation R4 Drama .......feeling very unsettled

Hullo fellow radio fans
didn't think this was reasonable to post in AIBU but actually do want to put some feelers out. R4 + the rest are my mainstay for sanity (ha !) or at very least cultural connection. I always look forward to and enjoy (mainly) the varied offerings on R4 + 4Extra topical drama. Love Shortcuts etc.
But I listened to The Invitation today on R4 which was listed as a comedy drama .... and I am completely reeling ! I feel so upset ! And my kids are all grown up and I have never had to deal with this kind of situation anyway !! Seems to have touched a deep nerve. Just in my imagination.
Maybe it's the Baby Reindeer effect....the way the whole thing spirals and goes crazy via WhatsApp etc. I think it was well written and acted, but I am all frazzled ....obvs that IS the point of drama, but a cosy cuppa tea / wine listen it was not ! (I do recommend however)

I thought it was great. Like you found, on the surface played for laughs but the underlying currents and themes being disturbing. One thing that was very effective was finding one's sympathy flipping between the protaganists. When it came down to it, it was highly uncompromising.

Sounds intriguing. Will add to my list.

@nauticant yes agree with the flipping between the protagonists as the story develops.....it did give me the heebie jeebies....lots of layers to unpick

@BlossomBlossomBlossom give it a whirl !

@BlossomBlossomBlossom @nauticant @Aintgointogoa I came on here to get some recommendations so thanks for that. I enjoyed this until it spilt over into ridiculous melodrama and a trite ‘lesson from the children’ at the end. I felt this should have been about one daft woman however, by the end I felt it portrayed all mums as a bit unhinged. I checked to see if a man wrote this but it was written by a woman.
