Archers thread #163: Too much aggro, not enough agri! Discuss The Archers here.

Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @LikeTalkingToLassie for the thread title idea! She and @LillianGish had fun with this theme on the last thread:

More farmer, less drama
More ploughing, less rowing
There's mileage in silage.
More sheds, fewer beds.

All good points. Fair to say nobody on the last thread was delighted to see the return of Harry. I think we all agree that Alice is a blithering idiot to get involved with him again. Most of us also think that Miranda is up to no good. Other storylines in play at the moment:

Alistair and Denise, with the massive complication of John and Paul
Ed and Emma - another doomed Grundy enterprise? Does Will still have the will to wang them some wonga?
Whither George - YouTube sensation or Borchester Magistrates' Court?
Will Markie cause mayhem at The Bull?
Will Harrison haul him in to Borchester nick?
Will Hannah get off with Chris?
Will we ever get used to the new Robert?
Will there ever be a new Roy?
Why do we hear so little from Brookfield now? (Although if we never heard Pip again, I for one would be delighted)
Will Stella dump Pip?

There are probably others I've missed. Over to you!

My neighbour sliced the top of his finger off with a chainsaw. Also badly cut his leg with one, standing in a drystone wall to wield it 🤦‍♀️. Cue us rushing him to hospital. (Also put his arm in a running cement mixer). I think Ed is cut from the same cloth.

Ambridge · 22/04/2024 09:10

I’m stunned, but simultaneously not remotely surprised, that it’s only just dawned on Ed that tree-surgery can be dangerous.

Bruisername · 22/04/2024 09:21

Also surprised Jamie didn’t mention it

Roysnewshirt · 22/04/2024 11:52

We have been talking about a chainsaw incident since the very words tree surgery were mentioned. Is he really that thick?!? Actually don’t answer that- look at his genes…

This SL has been signposted with larger signs than you get on the M1! The fact we have had months of build-up implies the bloodshed is going to be significant. One of them is bound to lose at least a limb but recovery time in Ambridge is quick so I expect it will grow back within a fortnight.

Unopenedpackofmenssocks · 22/04/2024 12:00

Surely this is not going to turn into a radio version of the longest opening scenes of Casualty ever?

Too obvious, surely?

Bruisername · 22/04/2024 12:03

Once you see paramedic 1, paramedic 2 and trauma surgeon on the cast list you know we’re in trouble

i just hope the big accident happens in training and we don’t have another 6 months of build up

LillianGish · 22/04/2024 12:09

Never a truer word was spoken @Roysnewshirt - it’s no longer a question of if, but when (and judging by the turnover of current plots I’d say it’s likely to be sooner rather than later).

harriethoyle · 22/04/2024 14:14

@FizzingAda is his nickname Lucky?! 😱

EBearhug · 22/04/2024 14:19

Wasn't his own grandfather killed by DavidArcher a falling tree branch? And it's news it could kill?

ClickyHeels · 22/04/2024 14:20

Did it not occur to Ed to do the research before committing to the tree surgery?

Tut tut, you can’t expect the script writers to know that!

Unopenedpackofmenssocks · 22/04/2024 15:26

Ha, yes, have we even heard Clarrie’s views on the subject?

Eastie77Returns · 22/04/2024 18:54

ClickyHeels · 22/04/2024 14:20

Did it not occur to Ed to do the research before committing to the tree surgery?

Is this a rhetorical question? We are talking about Ed who is incapable of doing anything that requires a modicum of common sense.

ClickyHeels · 22/04/2024 19:04

Of course it's a rhetorical question.

newtlover · 22/04/2024 19:11

what's Henry's game then?

TottersBlankly · 22/04/2024 19:11

They’re re-using dialogue and scenarios now?

Hard times …

Bruisername · 22/04/2024 19:13

I really would rather not hear any more about Rob and his impact on the family tbh

alice is a total idiot. Seems to be on self destruct

Bruisername · 22/04/2024 19:16

Oh god - even the continuity announcer is pronouncing it Ali-STARE

Eastie77Returns · 22/04/2024 19:31

Oh dear Alice.

I’ve forgotten Martha’s age. I wonder if she’s old enough to tell Chris all about mummy’s nice friend who read her a bedtime story.

She's about 3 isn't she? She will definitely tell Chris and probably Granny Susan and Grandads Neil and Brian too. And Aunty Kate and Great Aunt Lilian (it's the Carter genes)

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/04/2024 19:46

Martha had her third birthday on 9th March.

Roysnewshirt · 22/04/2024 19:55

The SWs have clearly been asked to spice things up. Another post-coital scene. Recent post-action conversations we have witnessed:

  1. Miranda and Brian
  2. Fallon and Harrison x 2
  3. Stella and Pip (poor Stella)
  4. Now Aliss and Harree
  5. Alistare and Denees snogging in the stationary cupboard

And not that long ago, Ed and Em bonking in the woods.

Is this what it used to be like? I don’t remember anything like this level of intimacy in my 10 years of listening. But I know people often talk of Shula in the wheatfield.

JanglyBeads · 22/04/2024 20:00

No, it's very "modern Archers"

Confused

IMHO it's a very important aspect of educating the public about the lasting effects of DV on children. There'll hopefully be lots more to come.

I would feel more generous towards that if they hadn’t messed the whole thing up. It’s really a SL I would prefer to forget all about

and I’ve had too much Henry and Helen tbh - would prefer to not hear them for a long while longer
