Archers thread #163: Too much aggro, not enough agri! Discuss The Archers here.

Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @LikeTalkingToLassie for the thread title idea! She and @LillianGish had fun with this theme on the last thread:

More farmer, less drama
More ploughing, less rowing
There's mileage in silage.
More sheds, fewer beds.

All good points. Fair to say nobody on the last thread was delighted to see the return of Harry. I think we all agree that Alice is a blithering idiot to get involved with him again. Most of us also think that Miranda is up to no good. Other storylines in play at the moment:

Alistair and Denise, with the massive complication of John and Paul
Ed and Emma - another doomed Grundy enterprise? Does Will still have the will to wang them some wonga?
Whither George - YouTube sensation or Borchester Magistrates' Court?
Will Markie cause mayhem at The Bull?
Will Harrison haul him in to Borchester nick?
Will Hannah get off with Chris?
Will we ever get used to the new Robert?
Will there ever be a new Roy?
Why do we hear so little from Brookfield now? (Although if we never heard Pip again, I for one would be delighted)
Will Stella dump Pip?

There are probably others I've missed. Over to you!

Who else would be out and about that late?

azra on an emergency call out but she’s too new
vet/vet nurse on emergency call out?
parent picking up child from party? Can’t think who

and given the direction they were going in who could it be in the other direction?

Bruisername · 05/05/2024 19:32

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 05/05/2024 19:30

quite a crash if he managed to put a car over this parapet! https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00w47v9/p00w1ssz

I’m no RTC expert but I don’t think that looks too bad?

FizzingAda · 05/05/2024 19:32

Just listened to the end three times on Sounds. Sounded like a car coming in the other direction, honking. Maybe the bridge is narrow, only one car wide, and he swerved, or hit the other car. There was the sound of creaking, and then a splash. Car gone in the river (with Alice inside?).
Yikes!

Bruisername · 05/05/2024 19:29

What if it was Brian looking for Alice?

At that time of night I think it would more likely be Chris rather than Brian. It is odd that George seems to have stumbled across her hours after she bought the Vodka and none of the Aldridge’s managed to find her in the meantime. Joy would definitely have called Brian as soon as Alice left the shop.

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/05/2024 19:33

I do suspect it was Joy Sad
Why else would they have her mentioning going to the concert?

Not Brian not Brian not Brian! 😱

Actually, re-listening to the end, it does sound like Alice is still in the car next to George at the end (there's a sigh), meaning that it's the other vehicle that went off the bridge. That's how I hear it anyway.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 05/05/2024 19:35

I hope it wasn't Joy.

George is in deep trouble. There's not the slightest possibility he was under the driving limit.

Eastie77Returns · 05/05/2024 19:36

I was confused when he was calling her Aunty Alice because I keep forgetting Chris is his uncle!

Bruisername · 05/05/2024 19:38

So. George gets out and puts Alice in the driving seat and goes home. Will covers up another car accident.

too eastenders?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 05/05/2024 19:39

given the direction they were going in who could it be in the other direction?

We don't know which direction they were going, I don't think.

If George was driving Alice from Borchester to her home, which is The Nest at Home Farm, they would have been going out of the village across the "Narrow Bridge" marked to the east of the map, close by Ambridge Hall. In whiich case the other car might have been Brian, Jakob, or Neil; they all live out that way.

If he was driving her from Hollerton-way it could have been into the village over the bridge I put up an illustration for on the previous page, which is almost on the village green, and it might have been anyone.

I don't think there'd be any reason for him to be going over the bridge near Brookfield or the bridge near Grange Farm.

Possibly? And George tells Will he was never driving as Alice wouldn't give him the keys?

CaptainMyCaptain · 05/05/2024 19:43

Clever twist to have George driving. I'm going to have to listen again.

DeanElderberry · 05/05/2024 19:43

I was imagining Alice tumbling out of a moving car, hauling herself up and leaning over the bridge to throw up, and falling over the parapet herself. Leaving George to decide whether to rescue her or to run. I didn't hear the other car, but I'm pretty deaf.

Bruisername · 05/05/2024 19:43

Thanks Asking - I knew you’d know!

DeanElderberry · 05/05/2024 19:44

Anyhow, it was jolly good and if only they let us have the Doom Music would be quite Paul Temple-esque. By Timothy!

JanglyBeads · 05/05/2024 19:45

TottersBlankly · 05/05/2024 19:27

That sound of the car hanging over the edge and finally falling …

<Shudders>

I didn't get that at all, the splash didn't seem nearly loud enough!
I mean, you're probably right (and I've just LAd), but the audio didn't make me picture that at all

JanglyBeads · 05/05/2024 19:46

Think it'll be Chris or brine in the other car

Bruisername · 05/05/2024 19:46

Well if the bridge is the one in askings link then I wouldn’t expect much of a splash tbh

BrightYellowDaffodil · 05/05/2024 19:48

I’ve been off these threads for a while as I hadn’t had time to catch up with the end of the last one/all of this one but…crikey.

I thought perhaps George had got out of the car and it was Alice’s car (with Alice in it) that had gone over the bridge?

lotsofdogshere · 05/05/2024 19:48

Is George insured to drive Alice’s car. Highly unlikely

There was definitely creaking which sounded very much like a car teetering.

ClickyHeels · 05/05/2024 19:52

I can't listen. I keep pausing it.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 05/05/2024 19:57

There’s no sound of the vehicles colliding but there is what sounds like Alice’s car going over ground that isn’t tarmac. Then there’s the sound of swerving, which is presumably the other car, and water. Then there’s the creaking (close by, considering we’re “with” George from a listening POV) and a splash. Having LA’d, I think it’s Alice and George who have gone into the water.

How deep is the Am?

Very unlikely. Any driver insurance is really expensive and even if Alice had it it is unlikely to cover drivers under 21.
