Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @LikeTalkingToLassie for the thread title idea! She and @LillianGish had fun with this theme on the last thread:

More farmer, less drama
More ploughing, less rowing
There's mileage in silage.
More sheds, fewer beds.

All good points. Fair to say nobody on the last thread was delighted to see the return of Harry. I think we all agree that Alice is a blithering idiot to get involved with him again. Most of us also think that Miranda is up to no good. Other storylines in play at the moment:

Alistair and Denise, with the massive complication of John and Paul
Ed and Emma - another doomed Grundy enterprise? Does Will still have the will to wang them some wonga?
Whither George - YouTube sensation or Borchester Magistrates' Court?
Will Markie cause mayhem at The Bull?
Will Harrison haul him in to Borchester nick?
Will Hannah get off with Chris?
Will we ever get used to the new Robert?
Will there ever be a new Roy?
Why do we hear so little from Brookfield now? (Although if we never heard Pip again, I for one would be delighted)
Will Stella dump Pip?

There are probably others I've missed. Over to you!

I did wonder whether the actress playing the Lord Mayor won a bet or something to be in TA - we don't hear that many one-off speaking roles.

It's much worse than that - that was Helen Atkinson Wood, Mrs Miggins in Blackadder (Georgian era) and also a regular on Radio Active on Radio 4 decades ago. Utterly wasted on last night's tripe. Why she agreed to do it is a mystery.

When Brad switched the suitcases, they were both clearly labelled so how could Brad be so stupid? But when Lily was involved, they were identical and unlabelled.

Liked Brad calculating he had a 50per cent chance he’d be right. It’s not often people make an explicit use of probability. And when they usually bandy around probabilities they’re usually talking bollocks.

I didn't need to know as much as I now do about what turns Harrison on. Seems to have been the main topic for the last three weeks.

Geebray · 18/04/2024 16:52

I still want to know why the Mayor, on discovering all her regalia was missing, went off for a stroll around the grounds without telling anyone she had been given the wrong suitcase.

Unopenedpackofmenssocks · 18/04/2024 18:20

I want to know how it was immediately obvious that it was a Maid Marian costume. It’s not that distinctive a look, out of context. Not like Minnie Mouse or something .

Yes, what makes it specifically Maid Marion, rather than Generic Medieval Wench?

Bruisername · 18/04/2024 18:27

I still can’t get my head around why it is the sheriff of Nottingham and not Robin hood

Bit of BDSM, obvs! With Alan Rickman's accent.

Bruisername · 18/04/2024 18:29

It just feels a bit …. non-consensual

though Alan Rickmans sheriff is preferable to costners Robin admittedly

Bruisername · 18/04/2024 18:30

I really don’t think Harrison could manage to channel Alan rickman either

given what a kick he seemed to get from stalking/arresting Fallon I’m surprised she didn’t just go down that route

Maybe it was in its original packaging.

Ah yes, those costumes you get on Amazon, never thought of that. I should change my username to UnopenedpackofMaidMarian 😂

I think the transvestite goat herding one from nearly 25 years ago remains the worst 'comic' episode ever, but last night's was definite contender. To continue Star Trek comparisons, these offerings from the Archers SWs are a bit like those occasional 'funny Ferenghis' episodes. Very rarely a good idea.

Though the Magnificent Seven riff with Iggy Pop was sublime.

edited to say nearly 25 years ago. Memorable is not always a good thing.

Edited

I have no memory of this episode, Dean! What happened?

I can actually imagine Fallon with her folksy alternative up cycling and band being a Live Action Role Player, dressed as a wench or warrior with elf ears, and Harrison being a Sealed Knot Roundhead (and/ or a Freemason) who enjoys a bit of poncing around in costume! I do dislike ND Brad being depicted as Rain Man last night though.

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/04/2024 19:23

Tonight's episode was no better.

MereDintofPandiculation · 18/04/2024 19:25

Well, if it were me, I’d be pointing out to - damn, I’ve forgotten her name - that honesty was a key thing I was looking for in employees and withdraw my offer.

I’m getting a bit fed up with her. Artlessness gets a bit tedious after a while. And half the time she sounds as if she’s picking a fight.

Isn’t Lily a cow?

ClickyHeels · 18/04/2024 19:55

No, she's a human.

DeanElderberry · 18/04/2024 20:08

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/04/2024 18:55

There was a goat that disliked men, so Eddie nicked Clarrie's best dress and wore it in order to bamboozle the poor animal for some reason which I have now forgotten. Merciful oblivion. I do hope I don't wake up at 3 am with total recall. The goat was not fooled. At least I don't think it was.

It was a very gender political story come to think of it, but before its time.

Gosh I remember getting cross on the BBC site and ranting on about goats being less stupid than that and being able to smell the difference between male and female humans, skirt or no skirt. Hey Ho how things change.

DeanElderberry · 18/04/2024 20:10

Iggy Pop was on Star Trek of course, with the magnificent Ferenghi. All acted by people much too good for the Archers, and with a better script.

we have been told that she's a human, but as with the internet, on radio nobody can tell ...

Returning to this thread after a long hiatus, haven’t listened in well over a month now - but came to compliment the excellent thread title!

Alwaysdieting · 19/04/2024 04:57

Brad-to-Chelsea,"how do you do it, get offered both jobs?" Chelsea-to-Brad," because im the only one who was interviewed because there is no one else in the whole of the village".
Brad being stupid boy Pike again. Didnt he think Lily fancied him before?
What will Joyce think of Mick moving nearer, she felt a bit overwhelmed with thier relationship before, at least she will be in TA hopefully pet.

ArtG · 19/04/2024 05:48

Geebray · 18/04/2024 18:26

Yes, what makes it specifically Maid Marion, rather than Generic Medieval Wench?

Given it was for Harrison’s benefit, there was probably a name tag.

Alwaysdieting · 19/04/2024 07:10

Didnt the Sheriff of Nottingham tried to rape Marion?

Bruisername · 19/04/2024 08:09

Yep. Either the sw thinks rape fantasies are cool or they haven’t seen the film! It’s as if they don’t actually know the characters in the very old and often told story of Robin Hood.

I also can’t see a link between maid Marion and staying in a fancy hotel whereas they would have had much more role playing potential with a French maid costume. Unless we are all maligning Harrison here and it’s actually Fallon who is obsessed with Alan rickman (fair enough)
