Anyone listened to all of this? Really interesting and complex story.

I've just finished it and I'm so sorry for Carolyn.

She was lonely and vulnerable.

He sounds like a nightmare to live with. He absolutely wanted money and mooched off her the whole time. I don't think anything he did or said was sincere.

I do have some sympathy for the daughters as they were worried sick. But their focus did appear to be about the assets.

I think he was being sincere a few times. Like when he said he didn't regret beating up his ex, the film star abd when the reporter asked him if there was anything he regretted after Carolyn had died and he said he wished he'd got more money from her whilst she was alive.

I've just binge listened to this podcast. I thought it was fascinating and a balanced account from Sue Mitchell on the whole - it can't have been easy trying to maintain friendships and get the story. I thought she was very even handed and she didn't flinch from telling us about Dave's history.

The information that came to light about him was hair-raising and disturbing - both his childhood abuse and the abuse he subjected his wife, children and girlfriends to. He was still being emotionally cruel to his daughter Cody and my heart broke for her. I wanted to scream at the radio for her to move on and let him go. I couldn't see Dave ever being the father she needed him to be.

The daughters were concerned about their inheritance but Dave was hardly the sort of bloke anyone would want their elderly Mum shacking up with. I thought he was clearly manipulating Carolyn about the sale of those properties and had tired of looking after her as she got frail.

On a side note, my Mum reunited with an old flame in her 80's. She turned into a girlish obsessed teen for a while, which was both heartening and slightly unsettling to observe! This man doted on Mum but also wanted her to himself and made it very uncomfortable for me and my siblings to spend time with her while he was around. Our relationship suffered for a few years.

The daughters were calling in to sort out the bed bug situation. Meanwhile Dave was busy poring poison into Carolyn’s ear about her daughter’s and she was so desperate to believe him she would deliberately switch off when Sue started talking about his youngest daughter, who he emotionally abused. Carolyn had fully signed up for cult of Dave and willing to overlook any bad behaviour mistreatment by him. And she ultimately lost her life thanks to his insistence that she didn’t have the Covid jab because his ridiculous conspiracy theories were more important than her daughter’s concern. And as for the inheritance, most people who aren’t no contact or would want to leave inheritance to their children, especially considering most of that wealth was gained their fathers work and them being in the right moment of time and location during the property boom. Making your own grandchildren homeless on the say so of a man who prioritises drinking with the lads every night over caring for his 80 year old partner isn’t rational or particularly caring. Dave slipped up when he started ranting about the money being his. I also think he has a very low opinion of women, his treatment of his daughters compared to how he raved about his son, and when he sold his second daughter he said that if she had been born a boy they would have kept her. He’s a cocklodger who is probably looking for his next meal ticket, with the help of the local church and the locals determined to think the best of him at all costs. I felt sorry for Carolyn’s daughters and Dave’s daughters and pretty much exasperated with everyone else.

I really thought the ending would be that he had shacked up with another elderly woman or that he had a history of doing so. Maybe he has now.

Carolyn gave him so much money and he worked of sorts but it appears he didn't have any money squirreled away.

He's a financial predator. He sold his youngest child 3 times!

The neighbor Sue who helped with the sale of the houses gave me the creeps as well.

I've just finished this and I'm placemarking it until tomorrow! It was so interesting.

maybejustonemoretime · 08/01/2024 10:21

This thread was also interesting and led me into a daytime tv hole binge watching the tv show mentioned.
It features stories nowhere near as complex as this case but if was jaw dropping almost constantly so thought it was worth sharing

I've binged all of this.

I have to say I didn't think much of the presenter. She was really taken in by Dave, wasn't she? She was watching him smoke crack and didn't tell his partner, who was her friend. She heard him say he wanted money out of her, and didn't tell her. I thought she was really immoral. She could've done an awful lot to help in that situation and didn't do anything at all.

I was surprised he spoke so freely. I was also surprised he went off so easily and think if I were those sisters I'd be very careful in future - I'd be afraid he'd set my house on fire or shoot me.

Wizzywoo18 · 09/01/2024 09:36

I'd be really curious to know if the community in California have got wind of this podcast or listened to it - especially that local church which was totally taken in by Dave, not to mention Sue the neighbour. I imagine his work might dry up if they did.

I'm now going to listen to The Shrink Next Door podcast.

Kestrelsky72 · 11/01/2024 20:41

Dave comes out of this ok. His back story is bad, which I feel was exploited by Sue Mitchell to make a radio DRAMA out of it. The daughters were absolutely vile, selfish and cold - at the end they are very cruel too. They weren't protecting their mum, they were protecting their inheritance. I've lost respect for Sue Mitchell making a tabloid mountain out of an ill-advised but not evil relationship.

nauticant · 11/01/2024 21:44

Dave comes out of this as being manipulative and it's interesting to read this thread and see how many here were persuaded by his good nature. The way he treated his kids! The way he treated Carolyn, particularly in blocking the vaccine for her, which may well have contributed to her death. Note she had a pre-existing condition of COPD.

Yes, he was able to come across as super-caring at times but for some people that's blinded them to him being nasty in many ways.

The daughters could have behaved better. But I think focusing on that rather than looking more critically at "caring Dave" is an example of having been misdirected.

OhComeOnFFS · 12/01/2024 11:12

I bet Dave thought that if Carolyn didn't have the vaccine, she'd be more likely to die sooner, leaving him with everything. I'm just surprised he didn't say he wanted to marry her.

I don't believe for a minute that he'd turned himself around. He was using the church to meet wealthy people and to get work, if not romance. It gave him a veneer of respectability.
