Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd be euphoric about getting a job in an abattoir, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4888492-the-archers-spoilers-thread-8-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for the thread title suggestions. @HumanWetWipe came up with Cider with Fat Rosie and @BeardieWeirdie thought up Meadow Rise to Candleford. I wish I could have put in the Line of Duty mashups from the end of the last thread. Another time.

Heading for a ferry shortly, so nothing more from me for now. Over to you!

I feel he will be subject to mild peril but ultimately rescued. The trauma will reignite dormant memories from the first kidnapping and he will become a quiet and anxious child causing Helen much angst about how much he’s changed.

or he’ll just go to school the next day and it will never be mentioned again

(money is on a sl involving teenage Jack wanting to know who his dad is, finding Miles and resenting Helen from not letting him meet him)

I think the dormant memories thing would be a bit of a stretch. He was well under a year old at the time of the kidnapping, around 9 months IIRC. The most he could have would be memories of it having been spoken of.

I wouldn’t put it past the sw….

It occurs to me that Rob said he was living in a flat in Penny Hassett.

Jack goes to school in Penny Hassett.

I thought the school was in Loxley Barratt, or is that just the name of the school and the location is Penny Hassett?

Forgot to say Congratulations to us all for reaching 150,000 posts! 🎉 Thank you for bringing the good news, @DadDadDad.

(Also nice to see the Teletubbies after many years …)

Damn. You're right. Well, it was an interesting speculation while it lasted!

As a fully paid-up (work for the church, theology doctoral student) Christian, I would absolutely stop practising if my only choice of parish had a vicar who led prayers the way Alan does. 😬

I think I'm going to get a rage way worse than the inaccuracies of the riding lesson if the SW mess up this SL because they have no idea about sacramental theology. My heart sank when the continuity announcer told us that tomorrow would feature Alan agonising some more. It's really not a hard case, and not particularly unusual.

So what would the approved response be?

Passepartoute · 02/10/2023 00:39

SequentialAnalyst · 01/10/2023 19:49

Maybe Rob is serious? I don't see any reason why he shouldn't be, in the face of imminent death?

Either that, or desperate?

Edited

If he seriously wanted to be baptised ASAP for genuine reasons, why would he not stay put and go to his local vicar? Why would he use up precious time whilst going to all the trouble of moving house to another parish, to say nothing of travelling to Ambridge and hiding till he could get hold of the vicar who he knew was bound to be unhappy about it?

Sorry, @Fink, I posted before reallising you had already answered this question. Thankyou for your explanation which was really interesting. I do hope the SWs have had a similar source of information, it would be really rather gratifying to hear Alan telling Ron to fuck off because he's been baptised already.

Check my follow up post - I had further thoughts about this.

<off topic> are you another German TA fan? </off topic>)
@Brefugee I'm mystified, but do tell.

Your user name means "real" in German (or a small village close to me just on the NL side of the border)

HumanWetWipe · 02/10/2023 07:33

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g , I listened to Lark Rise to Ambridge and it was ok.

TottersBlanklyIntoBimboCore · 02/10/2023 07:56

Oh gosh - I also listened to ‘Lark Rise’, and almost nothing stayed in my head!

I recall thinking Emma and Helen were well cast. But it was all so very low key and … subdued. And I don’t remember hearing a single thing, in terms of aural storytelling, that I haven’t heard before.

So I’m afraid I have nothing satisfactory to report, @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g. It was all perfectly nice but did nothing at all to push radio drama into a new era.

Bruisername · 02/10/2023 08:04

There are some pretty good and ‘groundbreaking’ drama on weekdays at 2.15 - when most people are at work/school. Perhaps if they had them on Sunday they would win over new listeners?

harriethoyle · 02/10/2023 08:19

I REALLY hope that we aren't now subjected to two weeks of Halloween spin off shoe horning. And if Emmur is stupid enough to be taken in by the hound baloney, it's a good thing she's back at college!

BrightYellowDaffodil · 02/10/2023 08:22

Just catching up on the thread, I’m a bit behind with my listening (again).

The thing about Shula’s horse’s bridle has irritated me for YEARS. The horse was unsettled then later on Shula announced that it was because the cheek piece had broken. If that was the case, she’d have noticed immediately because the bit - the metal thing in the horse’s mouth - would have dropped out and be dangling off the other side of the horse’s face. Not only would the horse then have been all over the shop but she’d have had no steering or brakes.

I remember shouting at the radio at the time!

HumanWetWipe · 02/10/2023 08:24

Same as what @TottersBlanklyIntoBimboCore , said, but I can see how it might have resonated with the teenagers.

I hardly ever listen to the midweek plays. Maybe I could give them a try.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 02/10/2023 08:26

The midweek plays are often very good.

EBearhug · 02/10/2023 08:32

HumanWetWipe · 02/10/2023 07:33

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g , I listened to Lark Rise to Ambridge and it was ok.

The actual Larkrise bits were. The TA bits were annoying- but short, so fine.

There are also some rubbish midweek plays - they aren't all excellent.

EmmasBirthdayEarrings · 02/10/2023 08:34

I would go so far as to say they are rarely excellent. I avoid all R4 drama and comedy - with one obvious exception…

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 02/10/2023 08:34

Thanks all, sounds like an ideal accompaniment to some admin I have to do, so will give it a go.

Being baptised and a resident of the parish will have the right, space permitting, to be buried in the churchyard. Pity the vicar has final say on the wording of the memorial as I thought up a few corkers. Still, even a simple “(beloved)father of jack” would be a suitably barbed parting shot.

Bruisername · 02/10/2023 08:40

Midweek dramas are hit and miss - there are a lot of sw who think they are a lot cleverer than they really are. I like a lot of the horror.

HumanWetWipe · 02/10/2023 08:43

I think I might have heard bits of the rubbish ones. I'm glad Emma Barnett is back so I don't have to reach for the off-switch at 10 a.m.
Why all the Irish accents on Sunday evenings?

Minimammoth · 02/10/2023 09:06

All a manipulation so he can tell Helen he will haunt her from the graveyard.
burn the bastard.
