Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd love a son like George, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Starting this new thread a bit early, as we're near the end of the last thread and I'm out all day today. As last night's episode was a banger, I thought I'd better ensure discussion can continue seamlessly!

The original idea for a dog theme for this thread came from the death of poor Weaver. RIP. Sad The Dog Days of summer are associated with storms and the silly season, so quite appropriate for The Archers at the moment! They may technically be over now, as it's all to do with the heliacal rising of the Dog Star, Sirius (no, me neither), but apparently the Anglo-Saxons considered they lasted into September (thank you, Wikipedia), so that will do for me.

So - what next for Helen, Henry and Jack? Surely even the Bridge Farm Archers will see that she needs professional help? After her outburst the other night they might finally grasp that Henry could do with some too. All very grim.

On the lighter side (perhaps), whither Pip and Stella?

Over to you!

You must be a “loyal listener” of More or Less, @TonightMatthewIamgoingtobecher

TonightMatthewIamgoingtobecher · 27/08/2023 19:46

Ha ha well it's good for giving people an overview on numbers and stats.

Good point @MiniHector, although set them against:

Jill
Peggy
Chris(/tine)
Alice
Kate
Debbie
Kirsty
Betty 😞
Clarrie
Susan
Tracey
Joy
Beth?
and a few others who I can't remember!

Older ones more likely to end in y/ie, younger ones more likely to end in a.

Not sure that holds up. List of common names in real life has a the commonest but y/ie not far behind

MereDintofPandiculation · 27/08/2023 20:17

he looks a warm nice person too, but he is so professional, I hadn't considered that he had a disabilty. Hmm. I’m sure you didn’t mean it quite like that.

Has nobody mentioned more or less? I love that program Yes me too. And Life Scientific.

MiniHector · 27/08/2023 20:42

@MereDintofPandiculation , it never crossed my mind that he had a disability, until it was mentioned. If you are suggesting that I was insulting him then you are completely wrong. I am disgusted at you for suggesting that I was. He does a terrific job. I couldn't do his job.

ElthamLemur · 27/08/2023 20:46

Are Ruth and David really so dim that they haven’t realised that the only lesbian Pip has been spending time with recently is Stella?
I mean, Pip doesn’t do much other than work on the farm and it’s not even school term so she’s not nipping off for Sapphic interludes after the school run!

MiniHector · 27/08/2023 20:48

Yes, they really are that dim, @ElthamLemur .

Bruisername · 27/08/2023 20:51

When David was doing the whole ‘oh there’s something else, um ah’ I thought she already knew it was a woman and he was going to say ‘I think it’s stella’

the way ruth said ‘it must be someone really special for her to be in such a state’ - so bizarre

Bruisername · 27/08/2023 20:51

I guess they are teeing it up for Ruth to be jealous or angry as she thinks stella is too old

MiniHector · 27/08/2023 20:55

Nah, they'll be fine about it because the sun shines out of Pip's arse.

Bruisername · 27/08/2023 20:56

I guess the whole village will think it’s wonderful and the only negative comment will come from George

TheUsualChaos · 27/08/2023 21:21

That was such a weird episode 😆 was expecting it to be weeks before Ruth and David knew anything.

No, I wasn’t suggesting you were insulting him, and it didn’t cross my mind that you were - I’m not sure what insult to him you imagine I was accusing you of. I was suggesting your wording was infelicitous. Because you don’t start a new sentence after “professional”, it reads as if the reason it hadn’t crossed your mind he had a disability was that he sounded professional and warm hearted, which I assume was not what you meant. That would be an insult, not to him, but to the generality of people with disabilities.

I thought rooth was going to muse for a second over the past week and then say
"Oh my goodness, that's why Pip got so het up at the skatin' rink! It's Stella, isn't it, Dayveed!"
(Not that he knows)

I also grew up with r4 on and as I left home I would have it on pretty much all the time and there was always something to listen to. But over the last few years I have to switch it off because it’s a repeat or just painful to listen to. I listened to just a minute the other day and found Sue Perkins so irritating I had to switch off. There just seems to be so much sycophancy these days

I was going to say exactly the same: I used to listen to Just a Minute a lot but Sue Perkins is very annoying.

I did read it the same way as you, @MereDintofPandiculation. I wondered if I was being oversensitive as I have a (invisible) disability.

I read it as an unfortunate wording rather than a deliberate insult, as your admiration is otherwise clear, @MiniHector.

WombatCowgirl · 27/08/2023 23:18

Was I reading too much symbolism into Pip bleeding on the wedding napkins? And David's " we'll just have to get something on that finger?"

EBearhug · 28/08/2023 01:17

But over the last few years I have to switch it off because it’s a repeat or just painful to listen to.

Nothing new about repeats. It's why my parents finally got us a TV in 1986.

BeardieWeirdie · 28/08/2023 01:28

And me, @MereDintofPandiculation. I cringed at the PP’s surprise at discovering someone so lovely and fantastic at their job has a disability too - the inference being that a disabled person wouldn’t normally. If trust this wasn’t intentional.

RegimentalSturgeon · 28/08/2023 04:58

If trust this wasn’t intentional

The poster had indicated it wasn’t intentional more than four hours before you posted this and before the post to which you have replied. HTH.
++++++++++++++++++++++++

I am told La Badger is quite good in things other than TA, so one has to assume that the aural awfulness of Pip is a deliberate editorial/directorial decision. WHY??????

faffadoodledo · 28/08/2023 07:39

I worked with Peter White (a long time ago). He had a phone in programme and he had a huge ability to absorb information. I was just a junior producer type person and was mightily impressed.

Wasted on You and Snores. I don't know why that programme still exists. It must fulfil some arcane paragraph in the BBC Charter

JanglyBeads · 28/08/2023 07:56

It is rather 1980s, isn't it!

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/08/2023 08:34

I like Sue Perkins on JAM. I think she gets it right.

BeatriceBatchelor · 28/08/2023 08:47

Yes, really poor form. I'm sick of the policing of language on this thread. It was clear that the poster admired Peter White so no need for 3 posters to try and make her feel crap when she'd just missed out a full stop.

The scene between Pip and David was good. I like David because I always believe that David actually is a farmer, a husband, a dad of three.

Hercisback · 28/08/2023 09:20

I don't mind you and yours, often use it to fall asleep to. Love TKC and GQT. I only listen on sounds and often pick up random podcasts too.

Sue has grown into JAM, definitely better this series.

I really need to listen to last night's TA. The language policing on this thread never used to be there, the benefit of any doubt was automatically given.
