Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd love a son like George, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Starting this new thread a bit early, as we're near the end of the last thread and I'm out all day today. As last night's episode was a banger, I thought I'd better ensure discussion can continue seamlessly!

The original idea for a dog theme for this thread came from the death of poor Weaver. RIP. Sad The Dog Days of summer are associated with storms and the silly season, so quite appropriate for The Archers at the moment! They may technically be over now, as it's all to do with the heliacal rising of the Dog Star, Sirius (no, me neither), but apparently the Anglo-Saxons considered they lasted into September (thank you, Wikipedia), so that will do for me.

So - what next for Helen, Henry and Jack? Surely even the Bridge Farm Archers will see that she needs professional help? After her outburst the other night they might finally grasp that Henry could do with some too. All very grim.

On the lighter side (perhaps), whither Pip and Stella?

Over to you!

Just listened back. George said to Emma "then she shouldn't have freaked out at me should she. She knew I was filming her."

So already blaming Helen even before angry Tom came knocking.

Tom just said I'll just open the app but I've noticed before on TA they never mention words like Facebook, Instagram etc (due to being brand names I'm guessing?). It's always just implied that's what they are talking about. So I think Tom posted something on their Bridge Farm page but when he opened it, the first thing he sees is George's video as they follow each other and it sounded like George had literally only just posted it.

Anyway, I'm clearly having a slow afternoon at work!!

I had assumed George had posted it on his own Instagram or TikTok and perhaps tagged Bridge farm in someway (although less likely TikTok as can't image Tom being on that one 😆). Perhaps he has settings on insta to auto share to FB as well so quite likely he may have added Tom to his friends list on one of of those. So wouldn't even necessarily need any hashtags, Tom could have just seen it whilst absent mindedly scrolling newsfeed as you do.

If he'd posted it actually on Bridge Farm own site or Instagram page that just seems so unbelievably stupid! My feeling after the episode was that all the Bridge farm promo stuff was just to demonstrate that he knows a bit about making and editing social media type videos so it follows on that his first reaction to Helen's showdown in the tea room was to get his phone out and start filming. Then within no time, he's knocked up a heavily edited reel mocking her and posted it to get his revenge on being publicly told off by a woman.

That was exactly my take too @TheUsualChaos .

Fartooold · 23/08/2023 15:49

I think they'll do the same clean up job they did on Roy with George.
Did I just imagine the confusion in his voice when Emmur asked him if he really believed 'the influencer?
George will redeem himself, over the next few years. BUT thank God Emmur has come to her senses!

As for who would you vote for to be written out.... not the usual suspects, I don't actually mind them. Probably Justin. Frees Lilian up to be outrageous once more 😉

Trouble is the Grundys have made fertile ground for a misogynist George. Sure he'll have been influenced by vile online stuff, but he'll already have seen a down trodden Clarrie and heard a woe is me (us) attitude from all the Grundy men. It's never Eddie's fault that the family is down on its luck; it's always the fault of the Archers or the stars in general. Same with Joe when he was alive.

To be fair, they've never blamed their misfortunes on a woman or been deliberately nasty to Clarrie (only thoughtlessly awful).

Quick question- totally random but I saw a trailer of sheep being pulled along the motorway just now. Why do the Grundies keep the Texans? Will they eventually eat them or is it simply for fun and to keep the grass down?

I think the prize Texel is for stud. If they have others they will sell them at market as normal. They don't have to eat them themselves.

George does a good line in injured innocence and confused what-are-you-on-about? when he is caught dead to rights. It is one of his stocks in trade.

A third of the way through the thread in 2 days! Cripes.

Lovely to see such a flurry of activity and some new names! Welcome, one and all.

I do not want a rapid redemption arc for George. The Ambridge oyster needs some long term grit in it.

And welcome to all the new posters!

Longtime lurker, but not commented before. It's interesting to read the different ways people came to The Archers. I grew up in an Archers household with Mum listening every Sunday morning whilst prepping the Sunday roast, and we kids knew better than to interrupt Mum during that hour. I wasn't really interested until I was living abroad and one day managed to get radio 4 via long wave, that familiar tune came over the airwaves and I suddenly felt terribly homesick for those Sunday mornings and my family, and was hooked from then on.

@stilldumdedumming I also remember Pip being born and how put out Elizabeth was that David and Ruth named her after Phil, thereby denying her the opportunity to use the name for any of her and Nigel's future progeny. She was properly miffed. Still haven't forgiven Vanessa Whitburn for killing off Nigel, stupid, stupid decision.

I agree with others about the actor playing Pip, all the weird noises and pauses and strange way of speaking, it's really annoying.

If it weren't for the fact that you remember Pip being born, I'd think you were my daughter! She texted me a few years back to say she was being me....prepping a roast whilst listening to the omnibus.

Nice turn of phrase there! I agree.

I see him as a nasty Nick type character. Need an array of types to make a story interesting!

MiniHector · 23/08/2023 16:59

The texan is a ram and is for breeding with ewes that aren't necessarily texan, to produce lambs that will have lots of meat on them.
A good ram is worth a lot of money. I can't remember if Ed's ewes are texan, but if he is thrilled when an ewe has a ram lamb then they probably are.

I remember when Pip was named. Ruth said they didn't like Daniella. Philippa Rose, Pip, named after her grandfather Phil. I think Shula said that she had hoped to use it one day. Her son is Daniel Mark. Daniel was born after his father died.

Frilly were named by both parents. Nigel chose Frederick Hugo and Elizabeth chose Lily Rosalind

Bruisername · 23/08/2023 17:01

Who is Daniel named after?

Ah of course

thanks

Bruisername · 23/08/2023 17:10

So pip gave her daughter her middle name?

MiniHector · 23/08/2023 17:16

Rosie is Rosie Ruth Grace Archer. Rose and Rosie are different names, even if there's an obvious connection. I can think of friends who did something similar.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 23/08/2023 18:05

It could end up very confusing if someone responds to a post which is then edited

JanglyBeads · 23/08/2023 18:49

It's all announced under Site Stuff.
