Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think Helen and Tom would do well on Dragons' Den, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @OverArmour for various title ideas! I would have liked to incorporate the suggestion from @Fleetress, which was

‘Do do one Ron, Ron, do do one Ron’

(Rob is Ron for many on this thread now)

Possibly a bit obscure for newer posters, though!

Anyway: we got through that last thread in no time at all. Combined effect of Rob and George, I suspect. I wonder if Rob will have made it to Ambridge by the time we need a new thread. I'm still waiting for Pat's shotgun to feature. That can't have been mentioned for the first time ever for no reason at all.

Over to you!

A as in Pa, dill as in herb is the perfect way of putting it, @AskingQuestionsAllTheTime, in terms of how he said it every time he was introduced. I suppose it probably is true to life that it would be repeatedly mispronounced in a small rural village…

Reggieismycat · 02/08/2023 17:14

Oh well it always sounds like Ardil to me and Some other people too I think but I shall call him Adil from now on. Dont suppose I took much notice when every body was mispronouncing his name and he, as you say was correcting people at the begining just thought he might turn out to be a baddie but he seemed quite nice. But then I thought Phillip was ok.🤷‍♀️

AngryBirdsNoMore · 02/08/2023 17:18

Im probably oversensitive to it, @Reggieismycat! I lived and worked in South Asia for several years, working for a UK based organisation, and it was a bugbear of mine that British colleagues often didn’t seem to even try to pronounce local colleagues’ names correctly. So it’s probably just a personal thing that I wince so much every time Roy says Arrrgh-dill.

Grimchmas · 02/08/2023 18:01

Somebody typo'd, or perhaps deliberately changed Adil to Advil in the last thread and I'd like to amplify that as being his new name now.

For the person who couldn't believe he wouldn't have got himself an apartment - I suspect his employer is paying. There was uproar in a company I worked in once when it was discovered that one of the graduate scheme executives had been staying in a hotel for a year and a half, fully at the expense of the company - he had been told to stay there on account for shorter trips, but nobody had given him a time limit or noticed the bill, it just kept on getting approved and paid 😳 it ate most of the marketing budget 🤯 ... he was given a week to ship out.

So yeah, I don't find it too unbelievable that if his employer is paying it as expenses he's happy to stay there, whereas a move into a flat he'd likely have to pay for that himself.

Calling all Russ lovers (all 3 of us!). I was listening to the dramatisation of Helen Dunmore's Blue Eyed Boy on 4Xtra. Thought there was something familiar about the actor with the dodgy American accent and sure enough it was Adonis Antony aka our Russ.

GolgafrinchamB · 02/08/2023 18:23

Oh my goodness, I made it to a thread title - I’d like to thank the academy, and my parents for believing in me etc etc

<weeps in Gwyneth Paltrow mode>

Fingerlimes · 02/08/2023 20:27

Today’s episode is not on sounds? Is it just me? 😮

PedantScorner · 02/08/2023 20:44

Not just you, @Fingerlimes .

@AngryBirdsNoMore , not sure if I'd confine it to British, I'd say monoglot English-speakers. Some people have no ear for language, and if Theo says his name as Tayo, he or he will continue to sat Theo.
Would you include accents- for example, an american saying Beckham as Beck-ham not Beckum, or a pakistani (not monoglot) colleague who said Vicky as Wicky?

PedantScorner · 02/08/2023 20:46

he or she

PedantScorner · 02/08/2023 20:52

I did catch the tail end of TA but only what I heard by clicking Start on Front Row in Sounds.

I quite agree.

Not sure on accents…

tealgate · 02/08/2023 21:10

It's just popped up on Sounds!

RegimentalSturgeon · 02/08/2023 21:23

@TottersBlanklyIntoBimboCore A pleasure! 😊Though a little Saki goes a long way, I find.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 02/08/2023 22:10

Is Eddie genuine in his conversation to Lynda about how much help he needs, or is he playing her like a fiddle?

”Couldn’t organise two mugs on a shelf” - Oh, how I love Lynda!

TherapistInATabard · 02/08/2023 22:10

I forgot about this new thread, and having not listened since Friday, I thought the inactivity on the old thread meant it had been really dull this week 🙄😆. Another excellent title!

tealgate · 02/08/2023 22:11

I was wrong, sorry. Not on Sounds now☹️

TheUsualChaos · 02/08/2023 22:59

God Tom trying to befriend Adil over cricket was painful! I think Adil has potential to become quite the thorn in the ointment for Helen and Tom. Not just over the cheese. If Ian ends up working for him then that may leave a sour taste in Helen's mouth. And do I recall him and Kirsty having a slight spark or have I made that up? Can't imagine he'd be Kirsty's type though and he's so dull!

iratepirate · 03/08/2023 00:50

Oh no, still can’t get it in Sounds 😫

Twyford · 03/08/2023 01:04

From the last thread:

And the way things are going weather-wise the fête is likely to be a complete wash-out - in more ways than one! Can even Lynda come up with anything to confound the elements?

Of course she can. Ambridge exists in its own weather bubble anyway.

Twyford · 03/08/2023 01:08

Reggieismycat · 02/08/2023 09:52

I was just thinking has Ardil's personality changed a bit. He used to be quite easy going and would join in anything to get accepted ie:- Christmas Choir, going round the Rewiding project with Kirsty and moving out of his room for Rylan. Now he didnt want to join the Cricket team and he sort of shrugged his shoulders at Tom and Helen( not that they didnt deserve it) about the GG contract. I think he would have been more diplomatic before, unless he has found his feet.? Also I think he stays at Lyndas because he gets all his meals and laundry, I expect done. He is most probley too busy to do that himself and its easier than finding a permanent home and housekeeper if he is not going to be permanent in Ambridge.

Joining in with the choir was just playing to a strength in singing Adil presumably already knew he had, and going around the rewilding project seemed to have more to do with enjoying Kirsty's company than wanting to join in with things. But it would be totally illogical for him to want to join the cricket team if he's never played. after all, if he were that interested he's have contacted the team himself and offered his services. It's totally nutty to suggest that Tom thought he would have been nursing a secret yearning to join the team, even Tom isn't that stupid.

CaptainMyCaptain · 03/08/2023 07:33

Many people in Europe can't say my surname which has a 'h' and a 'th' in it and they don't use those sounds. One waitress in Lithuania spelled it in a very interesting way which amused me so much I let it stand.

LillianGish · 03/08/2023 09:06

If we were coming up for a new thread I'd be suggesting something along the lines of Is the fete worse than death or am I jumping the gun regarding Pat's eventual intervention? At the risk of sounding churlish I suggested a fete worse than death a couple of threads back.

LillianGish · 03/08/2023 09:07

Sorry - that was entirely churlish. Why is there no delete button?

Glarptip · 03/08/2023 09:49

Yes it is burgeoning with churl.

If Peggy dies at the event from putting contagious ferrets in her slacks, we may be able to use an unfortunate pun about a death worse than fete.
