Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think Helen and Tom would do well on Dragons' Den, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @OverArmour for various title ideas! I would have liked to incorporate the suggestion from @Fleetress, which was

‘Do do one Ron, Ron, do do one Ron’

(Rob is Ron for many on this thread now)

Possibly a bit obscure for newer posters, though!

Anyway: we got through that last thread in no time at all. Combined effect of Rob and George, I suspect. I wonder if Rob will have made it to Ambridge by the time we need a new thread. I'm still waiting for Pat's shotgun to feature. That can't have been mentioned for the first time ever for no reason at all.

Over to you!

It’s a shame he doesn’t have a TA characters entry yet, but … this is how his name is written.

Glarptip · 02/08/2023 10:27

Round here it's "Aarrdil."

Reggieismycat · 02/08/2023 10:43

I thought everybody had called him Ardil must get it right next time.🤣

Glarptip · 02/08/2023 10:53

Should it be pronounced "Addle?"

Brefugee · 02/08/2023 10:53

i think Adil played it just right. He came into the village to get to know the people, how they feel about the refurbishement/updating of GG, joined in with events and activities to get to know the people.

It has given him a good insight into village life, and at least some of the people he may be employing there.

Am wondering if there might be a salon or something, maybe Chelsea can work there? (is Ian confirmed as Head of Food? or was that speculation?)

Taking inspiration from your post:

Oh the Tom scene was so awful - awful human. There was a fraught realism to his dialogue with Helen. They are dreadful.

TottersBlanklyIntoBimboCore · 02/08/2023 11:08

if he is not going to be permanent in Ambridge.

He is, though. He’s acquired an allotment. (I do wonder how long the waiting list was and whether he was able to queue jump.)

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 02/08/2023 11:38

The pronunciation in the Adil link sounded to me just the way Adil told everyone (repeatedly) that his name was pronounced, when he first arrived in Ambridge. He can't help it if the locals add an R to it! I salute him for not wincing and correcting them Every. Single. Time.

As for "core", it's like political scandal things always having "gate" tacked onto the end. We just have to hope that eventually journalists will grow out of thinking that it is cutting edge and clever, and stop using it.

No waiting lists for ours in the last year or so.

So glad Tom saw through Adil.

Eh? Do you mean Adil saw through Tom? Because Tom couldn't see through a window without instructions.

WitcheryDivine · 02/08/2023 12:23

Oh yes, sorry it's a hell of a day. thanks for the mental image!

PedantScorner · 02/08/2023 12:38

@Glarptip , Adil is a muslim name and is عادل, pronunciation will vary from country to country. I know 3, all muslims, one says Addl, one says عادل (and lets it be anglicised as Add-il), one says Ad-eel. Only 'Adeel' is of Pakistani origin, and I'm not sure if he writes his name as Adil or Adeel

The ayn doesn't have an equivalent english sound - but it's like a throaty AA. There's no R or equivalent in the name.
The name is (loosely) as aynADL or AAADiL

I looked up the Urdu form of عادل but the online translator said Zara Confused

PedantScorner · 02/08/2023 12:39

Tom couldn't see through a window unless it had a hole in it.

stilldumdedumming · 02/08/2023 12:57

@Pedant outstanding work! Thank you!

That's so interesting. Thanks.

PedantScorner · 02/08/2023 14:08

Thanks, but other than looking it up in Urdu it was not work. The one who says his name as Addle writes it as Adel and gets called Adele a lot because some people struggle with names more complicated than Jim and Bob.

PedantScorner · 02/08/2023 14:57

Maybe someone explained the pronunciation as Ar-dill meaning Ar like in garden not caraway. Some of The Archers characters put extra Rs in all sorts of words.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 02/08/2023 15:09

Kirsty is remarkably indifferent when asked about her long weekend. Still waiting to find out what went wrong.

Considering he spent the first several episodes that he was in explaining repeatedly how his name is pronounced, it's surprising that people are getting it wrong.

PedantScorner · 02/08/2023 15:41

Sorry, I meant someone behind the scenes not Adil himself.
According to the web, the Adil actor is a part-time teacher.

As you said, there are several ways in which this name can be pronounced. (See also Eva!) Generally I go by what individuals have said about it themselves when it comes to pronouncing their names.

Adil, in the programme, repeatedly pronounced his name as it is given in the link posted upthread: A as in Pa, dill as in the herb. This presumably means the actor had some idea how it should be said in the case of his name, and any mangling has come from other sources.
