Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think a stained glass window marking the birth of newborn twins is just what Ambridge needs, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Title composed in haste, making use of @Octothorpe's lovely coinage of Leonard Llewellyn-Bowen and @TheLassWiADelicateAir's terrific description of St. Smugula's mission to the heathen wasteland of far flung Sunderland, both from the last thread

I've abandoned the use of an emoji in the title, having been alerted by another thread recently to the fact that it makes it difficult for people with visual problems to use assistive software.

I won't say much more about The Archers, as I'm still feeling extremely jaundiced about the programme at the moment. Fingers crossed it takes a turn for the better over the next few days. It was good to hear Helen, Lee and Joy again tonight. Less delighted to hear the loathsome George. What a numpty not to recognise pheasant chicks! His Dad would be far from impressed.

Over to you!

Sorry @TheLassWiADelicateAir - I probably filtered it out at the time as it seemed too far fetched, but the more the SWs march on with improbable storylines the more likely it seems. I'm finding the whole story arc of Joy's helping Pat at the country fair, meeting Mick, installing a hot tub (didn't Lillian and Matt have a hot tub or have I made that up?) too forced and improbable for words and it set me wondering again why a woman from the NE with no link to Ambridge should up-sticks and move miles from her family. You clearly got there much earlier than me. I don't dislike Joy, but I'd find her more realistic if she'd moved out of Brum or Worcester to Ambridge (which obviously would be unlikely if its a witness protection thing). It all feels very Ambridge Extra at the moment.

LillianGish · 20/10/2022 09:27

FOUND IT! @TottersBlankly

EBearhug · 20/10/2022 09:49

Adam and Ian have a hot tub, which was at the house before they bought it. Can't remember who had it before, but think it was extended family, so could have been Lilian?

I hated last night's episode - it didn't sound like TA at all - not a single animal sound, burst of birdsong, tractor revving, click of change counting, hum of the tearoom or indeed anything to indicate the action was taking place in Ambridge. To a random listener who chanced upon it while turning the dial on their radio (do such radios even still exist?) it could have been any old radio drama (a slight boop here for Brad's performance) and a tedious one at that. Repairing a hot tub and the ins-and-outs of teenage dating do not an everyday story of country folk make - and yes I know TA is no longer using that tag, but I think it would be better if they were.

My teenage daughter recently said TA sounded like 'that programme' by which she meant Eastenders. Surely not?

LillianGish · 20/10/2022 10:21

She's not wrong @rainluie

WhoppingBigBackside · 20/10/2022 10:57

I can't remember who lived at Honeysuckle Cottage before Ian & Adam, but I think it was there that Lillian used the hot tub.

Fink · 20/10/2022 11:35

Siobhan and her husband, Dr Tim, used to live in Honeysuckle Cottage and I believe that once upon a time it was home to Walter Gabriel. I can't remember if Adam (and Ian?) moved in straight after Siobhan left or whether there was someone else in between.

Who lives at Blossom Hill Cottage, former home of the rapey custard fiend Titchener? I remember Anisha, the equine vet, used to live there, but who's there since she left? Maybe Usha should spend less time holding ladders and more time talking about her tenants!

WhoppingBigBackside · 20/10/2022 12:06

Thanks @Fink . Not sure who's in Blossom Hill Cottage now, but Helen, Tom and Johhny all rent even though, Beechwood was built on land they sold

Fink · 20/10/2022 12:47

The living arrangements in Ambridge are bizarre. It is hardly ever mentioned that Roy shares a party wall with Brian and Jennifer, his ex partner's parents, who are now living in a subdivision of his father's house. Nor than Brian and Jennifer took out a 6 month lease several years ago and don't appear to have renewed it or moved out since. Are they squatting?! Emma, Ed, and the children live in a mobile home even though her dad owns land (part of Willow Farm). Chris Carter lives over the shop which his mum runs and yet never seems to run in to her there. Will Grundy owns his own house yet is living with his parents on the pretext that several years ago he couldn't cope bringing up children and working full time whilst grieving. Is Richard Locke still silently around in Hazel's property, or did he bugger off again?

TeenDivided · 20/10/2022 12:50

The whole Brian & Jennifer moving out of Home Farm storyline was implausible and seems to have been forgotten.

Octothorpe · 20/10/2022 13:08

rapey custard fiend

😂😂😂

I also meant to pay tribute to whoever referenced the ‘sex pond’ the other day…

LillianGish · 20/10/2022 13:43

The whole Brian & Jennifer moving out of Home Farm storyline was implausible and seems to have been forgotten Indeed. And this is something that actually happened along with them selling Home Farm to the invisible Gills - never mentioned despite the potential for follow-up stories. Instead the SWs are busy fabricating ancient history like Kenton's diary - I mean who actually cares?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 20/10/2022 13:47

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/10/2022 19:17

They would never keep up with all the changes. As soon as they had written the script for an insert it would be out of date.

Never a truer word. Revolving door in number 10 now.

Brian and Jennifer's lease will just roll on until either the landlord or tenant end it.

Chris is getting one of the holiday cottages- which is only fair- as part of his settlement.

Custardgate Cottage seems to have been forgotten about.

Pat 'n' Tone really missed a trick when they sold the development land.

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 20/10/2022 17:26

Do Johnny and Hannah live in Will's house?

It would be interesting to hear, though, what happened to the owner's six month work placement in France which led to the couple offering Willow Cottage up for rent. Did they love Strasbourg so much that they've emigrated? Did they return and decide that village life wasn't for them? They just moved in, spent a few years as silent characters (did we occasionally hear from them?) and then moved away 'for six months'.

I forgot about Chris getting a cottage.

I suppose it's a different situation though. Home Farm is considerably bigger and richer than Bridge Farm so Brian and Jenny could probably afford to have the various cottages be unprofitable. Why did Pat and Tony sell? I can't remember, was there a project they wanted to fund for the Sauage King or something? And they already pissed Justin off by Tom trying to get double the offer on the table, I doubt he would have agreed to reserving land for their family members. I have family whose farm was split by a motorway and they gave the small parcel of land on the far side to one of their children to build her own home, it turned out to still be blooming expensive. So, all things considered, if they needed the money (I can't remember why, but I'm assuming they didn't sell perfectly good land just to make a quick buck) then it makes sense to take that rather than use it to build houses for the kids.

Yes, Hannah and Johnny are living at 1, the Green, Will's place, formerly owned by Neil & Susan. Tom's old bedroom is presumably going spare.

JanglyBeads · 20/10/2022 19:15

Alleluia Alan!

WhoppingBigBackside · 20/10/2022 19:18

BOOP for Alan. Well said!

Fink · 20/10/2022 20:10

Oof, Alan's finally grown a spine. Well done, lad. Now, the Archers own enough properties between them (back to the earlier conversation), why don't they install a custom-made stained glass window in one of those? I bet it would look nice in the downstairs bog/ boot room at Bridge Farm 😂

ILoveShula · 20/10/2022 20:31

But they don't do they. There's the Lodge, the Dower House, Bridge Farm, Honeysuckle Cottage and The Nest, so that's really just Bridge Farm.

So many of them are renting.
Not that there's anything wrong with renting but it doesn't give you scope for commissioning stained-glass windows

ILoveShula · 20/10/2022 20:33

Maybe Beth will move to No 1, when she realises that Ben's bringing up the baby Horrobin

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 20/10/2022 20:41

Oh boop Alan !

"Our window" who does she think she is.

Bridge Farm or the Lodge are the most obvious choices for a vanity window, unless they could persuade Hazel that it really is a memorial to her beloved father and have it in one of her properties, like the shop (which I think she still owns?). Good luck with that after she turfed out Tom and Natasha already, they're not the best of friends. Or Lilian is the majority shareholder at The Bull, that would be a nice place for a stained-glass window 😅

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 20/10/2022 21:18

I think some one mentioned taking Natasha down a peg or fifty.

So, Natasha, Seren and Nova - Star Star- hopefully not inspired by The Stones' song of that name ! [Head tilt and tinkly laugh]

(It's about groupies. It's too rude to be played on the BBC. I honestly did think of it when they announced the names)

ILoveShula · 20/10/2022 21:49

They could have the supernova window in the tearooms
