Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think commissioning a stained glass window for two of your great-grandchildren and nothing for all the others is a sensible thing to do, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/4197199--The-Archers-spoilers-thread-6-Cant-wait-for-7-02pm-Join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @LillianGish and @MuddlerInLaw for title ideas, which I have played around with a bit. I'm sad to have heard the last of Peggy. An era starts to draw to a close.

What a relief to be out of the Steph Casey phase, which I hope was an unfortunate blip, not to be repeated. [Triumph of hope over experience there ... ]

@BoreofWhabylon has asked the 🔮 about Adil and it predicts that he is actually the Mysterious New Owner of Grey Gables but won't be revealed as such until he has won Kirsty's heart (or some similar Mills & Boon level tosh - apols to the 🔮 but it does seem to have a mushy side). I still cling to the idea that the mysterious silent and invisible Gills who now own Home Farm may have some role at GG, but why not name them?

No mention of the heatwave in Ambridge, but budget constraints probably severely limit their scope for topical inserts these days. IRL I believe this has been a tricky time for farmers. Perhaps the SWs will catch up with this over the winter and start putting in some farming chat about diversification away from oats to olives, or similar. We already have at least one vineyard in the Ambridge area, at LL. (I understand there was another, in the heart of the village, decades ago, but the SWs have now forgotten all about it, sadly.)

Over to you!

Chelsea is not a driver yet and would probably find any convertible flash apart from Joy's. Gemma's car might be old and on HP. Any repair to a mini tends to be expensive compared to a ford or vauxhall. Gemma might have plenty of disposable income or might be someone who likes so-called status symbols. Sterotypical working class like Chelsea and her flashyy going out dresses blah blah blah

From one of the many webpages about private prosecutions:

If you believe you have a case against someone, the first thing to do is to have a private prosecutor review your case. They will be able to advise on whether any prosecution is likely to succeed.
If it’s decided to proceed with the case, the prosecutor will prepare evidence and statements and an application will also be made to the court for a summons

Was there really enough time for all that to happen since last week? Seriously? When the courts are, we’re told, absolutely groaning at the seams with strain and serious cases are waiting months/years? Or was this letter (or email, or carrier-pigeon) just from a tame solicitor saying Gemma wanted to bring a private prosecution? Because they seem like two very different things.

The script writers knowledge of the legal system and the legal profession and how they work suggests none of them know, or have ever consulted, a solicitor.

I expect members of other professions experience the same eye-rolling incredulity as I do when theirs are touched on.

GraceFairbrother · 17/08/2022 13:41

I doubt they would ever need to refer to my line of work, although they might have done in a way. Maybe that's a good thing.
It's not the sort of occupation a literary heroine or hero has but might be a comedy job. Mentioning no names. Think enigma.

TheHideAndSeekingHill · 17/08/2022 14:19

I was just thinking what a welcome addition Ben and Brad have been to the face of Archers male youth.

I think every single other boy has been thuggish or stereotypical manly (farming man style).

Girls come in three kinds: working class and plucky, quiet and worried, posh and smug.

Madcats · 17/08/2022 14:29

Take the job, Toby!!!!

I wonder whether Rosie's school will have those torturous weeks of "settling in" until half term.

Not much in the Archers makes sense these days, so I am not going to attempt to understand the Chicken Factory story.

WhoppingBigBackside · 17/08/2022 14:38

Not sure if that's fair. Kristiffur and Wiwyum started out OK. Both decided on careers early on and stuck too them. Will only gave up gamekeeping when his health meant he couldn't continue. Will was probably always going to be a bit 'traditional' given what role models he had, but Krisiffur had a personality change . Chris grew up with hardworking parents who both took worked an both took care of the children.

Not sure if posh and smug is how I'd describe the third category of Ambridge girls, but I know what you mean. Comfortably off and entitled?

WhoppingBigBackside · 17/08/2022 14:39

to not too. Whenn wll I lernn to hitt every key and onnly he once?

UrsulaPandress · 17/08/2022 15:26

I’d sack the HR Manager before anyone else.

FlosCampi · 17/08/2022 15:27

My guess that Tracey has accepted a written warning, for instance, and the accusation of bullying Gemma, in return for Gemma dropping the private prosecution against Chelsea. That's why we didn't hear the end of the HR meeting, because her sacrifice will be a big revelation.

MuddlerInLaw · 17/08/2022 15:46

Yes, that’s what I meant - that the end of the meeting was ‘not’ resolved satisfactorily - and we’ll only hear about it later on. But you put it much better!

JanglyBeads · 17/08/2022 19:38

Alice's get it won't she.

Oh Eddie.

Londonderry34 · 17/08/2022 19:45

Jennifer is an utter hypocrite. She encouraged Justin and Lillian when Justin was married despite being devastated by her own husband's betrayals. Also, where is she for the SA grandchildren?

*Alice'll get it, won't she?!

Atichen · 17/08/2022 20:40

I'm sure someone (Tracey?) Said Gemma has a rich/well-off boyfriend/husband ...might he be a solicitor & hence the car

WhoppingBigBackside · 17/08/2022 21:04

Could be. Only just listened. Why do I bother?

Quia · 17/08/2022 21:11

WhoppingBigBackside · 17/08/2022 12:47

Please do, @TheHideAndSeekingHill . I'd like her to make one of her arrogant selfish decisions and come to a sticky and terminal end, taking the Fat Fairchild with her.

I don't think I could take hearing Ruth and David going on for evermore about their late lamented and sainted child. I'd be happy if she just buggers off to a job in somewhere thousands of miles away with dreadful communications, e.g Antarctica or in a submarine on long-term assignment.

WhoppingBigBackside · 17/08/2022 21:26

Yes but if she did something really awful first and they never mentioned her again...

I'm pretty sure years ago Pip was destined for faraway farmlands, S America? She decided not to didn't she?

WhoppingBigBackside · 17/08/2022 23:01

Something like that.

Can't the scriptwriter give her a machine gun and have her go on the rampage killing George Grundy, the Fat Fairchild, the Caseys and a few others before turning the gun on herself? The Brokefaileds would be too horrified to ever mention her again, and we's only ever hear of her in whispers from Radio Carter.
Where's the intern?

Can she gun down Shula and Peggy (final send off)

WhoppingBigBackside · 17/08/2022 23:17

No. Not Shula or Peggy.

I'll save Shula and the fat Fairchild and swap Alice and Lily.

WhoppingBigBackside · 18/08/2022 13:52

Oh no, not Alice and Lily. They are First Family so must be saved.
We don't want to save Fat Rosie as she might take after her mother. Maybe we could sacrifce Marthyr

WhoppingBigBackside · 18/08/2022 14:03

Pinci and Pyrci can go too, and all the OTT cameo appearances.
I'll keep Advil, might be handy if TA becomes too much of a headache.
