Just caught up with episode 1 on Sounds. Different format from normal, reflecting the lack of audience present at the recordings. I thought it worked very well.

Oh my, Rich Johnston compares it in quality to I May Destroy You. That is the highest possible praise.

Re-listening with careful attention may become my Summer Project.

I'd go along with what Palavah said for the most - gently clever but not actually that funny. I like the concept and how it was played out but it's not really the laugh out loud comedy that I'd come to expect from a Souvenir Programme. It was a good listen though.

You definitely get more on second or third listenings. In one of the earlier episodes someone is surprised Newt is wearing his top hat again after Myra's wedding. You need to hear the end of the final episode for that to make sense though...

Listened to them all expecting to have an “aha!” Moment and I didn’t. I don’t get why I’m supposed to care about the characters, and having 4 actors play multiple characters was very hard to follow. Reading about it, I get now that episode 1 where newt is actually burying his daughter and not his niece is meant to be terribly poignant, but I had completely forgotten there was even a funeral in episode 1.

Also, what’s with the bloody wolfhound song? There’s a reason music hall died out.

It’s like an origins story for a bunch of characters you’ve never heard of.

It’s a miss for me

I've only just listened to this because I heard the first episode and was taken aback that it wasn't the Souvenir Programme as we'd come to know and love it.
But binge listened to all 6 with dd (16) and got completely drawn in. We loved it!
It was like listening to a 3d puzzle being solved.
We're going to listen again to pick up more details / references.
JF is just so bloody clever!!

I listened to the first one in the car and thought I'd selected the wrong programme as it is so different from series 1-8. But having given it a bit of time, I think I love it. It's not funny, but it's sweet and thoughtful.

Entire series repeated on R4 between Christmas and New Year. Good.

John Finnemore and the actors are live tweeting as they are being broadcast on radio 4 at 11pm. Look under #halfaglass.

ChristmasRobins · 30/12/2021 21:50

I thought it was one of the most clever and creative things I’ve ever heard on the radio.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 30/12/2021 22:01

So did I. I listened to them all twice in the summer, and am looking forward to listening to them all again.
