Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think we should hear more about the Naughty Milkman, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3853783--The-Archers-spoilers-thread-5-Cant-wait-for-7-02pm-Join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @Roysnewshirt for the excellent title suggestion, which I tweaked a bit.

I wonder how much dialogue we're going to get in the coming weeks. They're back to normal recording, I believe, albeit socially distanced. Also, when will we get our Friday and Sunday episodes back? I know I'm not the only regular to miss TA a lot more on Friday than on Sunday. The Sunday episode is still an incomer, of course, having only been introduced some 20 years ago, of course. Grin

(My parents retired to a village and some features of Ambridge life are very familiar from their experience, the 'incomer' label being one.)

Fallon and Harrison had discussed it and were not planning on any, but Fallon is now broody.

Huh? It seemed to me she was making it clear that she is anything but broody.

MikeUniformMike · 02/10/2020 13:42

I never knew it was Britwell Salome not Salomy. Well, I never.
Didn't get Keynsham and Frome right first time.

TheSilveryPussycat · 02/10/2020 14:08

I give you: Ireshopeburn.

Local pronunciations are designed so outsiders can be easily detected. At least, that's my theory.

Darker · 02/10/2020 14:12

Since when has the annual Christmas show become the responsibility of, and a money-spinner for, LL?

I guess it goes where the director arranges it. I'm wondering what they will come up with which qualifies as financially viable in the current climate.

MikeUniformMike · 02/10/2020 14:22

I sup burn.

Fallon will be upduffed this side of haloween.

For those of you not on Twitter, following the Archers, a link was posted to a government agency* film explaining about Horse Trading.

It was a bit of an eye-opener to me:

*Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority

If the irritating R4 plugs for the Archers attract some new listeners that can bring these lowlives to justice, I am willing to forgive the SWs.

Thanks. I just listened. Powerful stuff.
AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 02/10/2020 16:25

If they make a good job of it, that will be terrific.

If they are as good as they were about eg the legal consequences of coercive domestic abuse, not so great.

I noticed that the organisations which had been all in favour of that storyline, and proud to say they had been consulted for it, shut up rather before it drizzled to its end. Like the Nuffield Trust abruptly having nothing more at all to say about their scholarships having been on The Archers whoopeee when they heard what had been done with them.

MereDintofPandiculation · 02/10/2020 16:26

We are simple, straightforward souls round here Apart from the pronounciation of all the syllables, eg Eve-i-shum rather than a brisk Eve-shum, Tyddesley Wood as 3+1 syllables etc. But yes, names may be exotic (Flyford Flavell) but they're easy to pronounce. Not like Woolfardisworthy or Meopham.

MereDintofPandiculation · 02/10/2020 16:29

Didn't get Keynsham and Frome right first time. Isn't Keynsham like it was on the Radio Luxembourg adverts?

MereDintofPandiculation · 02/10/2020 16:43

Thanks. I just listened. Powerful stuff.

I feel slightly sick. One of those things I've known about in theory but never really thought about.

UntamedWisteria · 02/10/2020 17:20

I managed to miss every episode this week. The only storyline I'm interested in at the moment is Philip/Gavin/the Horses. Is it worth me listening to the repeat on Sunday?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 02/10/2020 17:37

Well, you could.... There is a scene of misinterpretation, not unlike the last one.

EBearhug · 02/10/2020 17:41

Isn't Keynsham like it was on the Radio Luxembourg adverts?
Yes, but I suspect many people won't know what you're on about these days.

LillianGish · 02/10/2020 17:51

woman keen to have a child, man lukewarm or against it? I can't think of any case, off the top of my head Kate and Jacob.

Keynsham. Tell me more about Keynsham. I don't want to talk about it. I can't think.

Bonzo Dog Band Keynsham.

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 02/10/2020 18:18

That gangmaster video was pretty grim ...

I imagine the whole international people-smuggling thing was just too complicated for the writers to get involved with. (And maybe they thought it would be too easily confused with the legitimate summer pickers at Home Farm?)

So are we to assume Philip has opened multiple bank accounts for each horse? And run up debts to entangle them in endless difficulty should they ever escape? Will Blake be given only a moment's notice, if any, that he's being moved on to another owner? And, once he's been sold, Philip will be looking for a replacement, won't he?

MereDintofPandiculation · 02/10/2020 20:55

Philip at one point was talking to Blake and reminding him that he was basically on the streets. I think rather than doing the whole trafficking form Lithuania business, he picked himself up a handful of people on the streets.

Madcats · 02/10/2020 21:42

Just commenting from up thread about Somerset pronunciations (I live locally):

Keynsham is "Cane-shum" (like "(sugar) cane" and it is a short final syllable, but sounding a little bit "oo"y). I am trying to think of a redeeming feature of Keynsham, other then the fact that is used to have a good pram shop. It had a Cadbury chocolate factory once, but Kraft closed it down as soon as it bought the company and shifted production to Poland (despite promising they wouldn't).

Frome is "Frooom". Journalists, writing for weekend supplements, love the place.

I really miss TA on a Friday and Sunday (those were probably the only nights I ever listened to at 7pm).

MereDintofPandiculation · 03/10/2020 10:23

I really miss TA on a Friday and Sunday

From Thursday 7.15 to Monday 7.00 is 3 days 23 hours and 45 mins, ie 15 mins short of 4 days. More than half the week with no TA.

But they've made it permanent now, haven't they?

Augustbreeze · 03/10/2020 10:34

Permanent????
😵😵

Darker · 03/10/2020 10:54

I hope not! I can cope with it on Sundays but I get caught out every Friday.

MikeUniformMike · 03/10/2020 11:37

Yes, Kane-shum and Froom.
I remember the chocolate factory.
