Anyone been listening to this podcast series? Have just finished and they had me gripped.

OP posts:

Yes - I thought it was a fantastic piece of investigative journalism.

sotallsotall · 21/11/2020 09:03

Hoping it's okay to bump this. I've just finished binging all the episodes and it was so gripping! I hope all the people involved are happy now. I felt Goli's pain so much.

I think part of the charm was Rob's personality and his relationship with Sue and hearing it grow as the story went on.

MikeUniformMike · 26/11/2020 10:23

I seem to have heard it some of it about 5 times, including on World Service. I didn't enjoy it.
The story is incredible, and a good one, but I felt it was yet another programme about refugees by the beeb, so didn't really listen and switched it off several times.

The story is here

I feel the same about the Intrigue series.

soschreibfaul · 27/11/2020 13:17

I had to overcome my dislike of the presentation to listen to the end.

MikeUniformMike · 27/11/2020 13:20

It was the presentation that put me off too.

Woke up in the middle of the night. Switched the radio on and it was... yeah, you guessed. Is there no escape?

Did anyone hear the criticism of Intrigue (the White Helmets) from listeners on Radio 4 Feedback yesterday? It was pretty damning in terms of what the format does to the listening experience.

MikeUniformMike · 07/12/2020 18:00

I heard Feedback. Intrigue didn't strike me as bad as Girl Taken, but that might be because I wasn't really listening to it.

There was some prejudice on my part to GT because I got 'refugeed out' by R4 a long time ago (don't get me started on the 3-hour COVID news bulletin every morning), but I can't seem to get away from GT.

The faux-documentary format just doesn't work for me.

The constant exposure to one subject leads to fatigue. I know the current crisis is important but not for the best part of 3 hours.

I know they have schedules to fill, but it is meant to be entertaining.

Dulcinae · 02/02/2021 21:44

It had me gripped as well, OP.

Intrigue (the White Helmets) was repeated at the weekend.

Speaking of Feedback, the bit on hiraeth annoyed me. It's just a word that can mean nostalgia, homesickness or longing. It's nothing special.
There are other welsh words that can mean different things, but they don't get the same treatment. One I like is diniwed, which can mean harmless, naîve or simple (as in not terribly bright).
