@CaptainMyCaptain

even though it’s really not credible as the lads are brits and modern slaves tend to be Eastern European, or from elsewhere in the world. I think the point being made is that people think that, but it's not true. Other vulnerable people are drawn into it.
I was just going to say that. It is most definitely not true that UK residents are never victims of modern slavery. There have been several prosecutions involving vulnerable, homeless British men being kept as slaves, in some cases for years.
AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 22/12/2020 15:21

There's a fine line drawn between wage-slave and slave, in the case of immigrant labourers.

The Morecombe Bay victims were slaves. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_Morecambe_Bay_cockling_disaster

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/12/2020 16:06

People with learning disabilities can also be victims.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 22/12/2020 19:38

Bore ... Are you suggesting, on the other thread, that one resident's New Year special announcement (IIRC) might be Elizabeth getting engaged (or even married) to Vince? All that guff from Ruth about how the couple are 'not serious, just having fun'???

Suuuuuuuuuuuurely not???

OhLittleBoreOfWhabylon · 22/12/2020 19:50

I'd forgotten about the "special announcement" Poule! But, now you mention it... Xmas Grin

OhLittleBoreOfWhabylon · 22/12/2020 19:51

I definitely think the Ruth guff is just that - she knows nothing!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 23/12/2020 20:57

Apparently the reason i wasn't sent any RT Ambridge Diary was that in the fortnight Christmas/New Year edition for this week and next there isn't one; I don't feel so bad about failing to put it up now.

MaryLeeOnHigh · 24/12/2020 18:30

Nothing after tonight till the 29th, when Kirsty has to make a big decision. They're leaving us in suspense for an awfully long time.

OhLittleBoreOfWhabylon · 24/12/2020 19:03

That's so we can experience the New Year's events "live".

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/12/2020 20:44

Spoilers a bit further ahead.

[Mon 28 Dec Nothing - but there's an episode on Friday]
29 Dec Kirsty makes a big decision and Tracy attempts to cover her true feelings.
30 Dec Freddie attempts damage limitation and Phoebe tries to cheer up a loved one.
31 Dec Peggy has a shocking suggestion and Jazzer finds himself in a compromising position.

Mon 04 Jan There’s regret at Brookfield, and Justin has questions to answer
05 Jan Kirsty reveals the truth, and Neil’s under pressure
06 Jan Clarrie’s a reluctant romantic, and Lynda’s feeling inspired
07 Jan Roy has some advice for Kirsty, and Shula’s having doubts

11 Jan Kirsty is feeling guilty, and Harrison’s getting tough.
12 Jan Rex is out for himself, and Tracy’s keen to make something clear.
13 Jan Neil can’t stop fretting, and Jazzer has a challenge over breakfast.
14 Jan Jim is not holding back, and Helen’s concerned about Kirsty.

18 Jan Kirsty lashes out, and Brookfield fear someone is out to get them.
19 Jan Pip vows revenge, and Shula struggles with a terrible dilemma.
20 Jan Elizabeth puts her foot in it, and Brian offers some words of advice.
21 Jan Shula faces her demons, and Vince makes a surprising suggestion.

Food for thought there ...

Shame whoever is out to get the inhabitants of Brookfield doesn't appear to succeed in disposing of Pip.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/12/2020 21:34
Grin

I have a theory that although the most dramatic storyline running at the moment is Kirsty/Philip/modern slavery, on big anniversaries the episode has to focus on people with Archer blood in their veins. Brookfield, then? Unfortunate, when they are by far the dullest of the Ambridge families.

The evil detectorists?
Esse321 · 26/12/2020 15:28

What demons does Shula have to face? a dark night of the soul maybe?

ILoveShula · 26/12/2020 16:07

Has a village treasure hunt been arranged. I read something about it in the paper. I might have cut it out.
[goes to rummage for it]

Here goes:
January 1, 2021 marks the 70th anniversary of The Archers (NYD, R4), so you can guarantee that either something truly momentous will happen (please God, nobody go up onto a roof), or there will be a riveting discussion about milk yields. This week in Ambridge, a treasure hunt descends into chaos, and several villagers find themselves plunged into a nightmare that will mean life is never the same again. Crumbs.
Straight after the anniversary episode, Kenton and Jolene host a socially distanced quiz night in The Bull for The Archers Anniversary Quiz (NYD, R4). Jane Garvey, Martha Kearney and Chris Aldridge form a team to take on three Archers experts and listeners can play along at home, though you'll have to supply your own pint of Shires.

Quoted from Dec 19 2020, Torygraph Review Section, On My Wavelength by Charlotte Runcie.

BoreOfWhabylon · 26/12/2020 18:40

Ooh, lots to get into there, thanks Gasp0 and ILoveShula!

I think Justin will be rearranging the mega-piggery and redefining Neil's role in some way. Neil will leave and set up with Rex.

Gawd only knows what Smugula will be angsting about this time or whether it is part of the plunging into nightmare or a sided plot.

Quiz sounds good!

BoreOfWhabylon · 26/12/2020 18:42

side plot!

And they should have @AskingQuestionsAllTheTime on the quiz team!

ILoveShula · 26/12/2020 18:43

Maybe they do.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 26/12/2020 20:19

Nope. Nothing to do with me guv. nothing to see here....

Well, apart from the usual spoilers for one week at a time:

Daily Mail Weekend Magazine Archers Update 29th December 2020 - 1st January 2021
Peggy has spent the autumn of her life throwing a spanner into other people’s works - and will carry that habit with her into 2021 with a controversial suggestion for one of her clan. A malign new year creeps over Lakey Hill, finding many Ambridgers up to their armpits in a swamp of problems. Kirsty is still in shock, while Roy and Phoebe struggle to pick up the pieces of last week’s revelations. Freddie gets a plateful of worry, while another villager shares a piece of life changing news. A treasure hunt descends into chaos and, for some, a nightmare unfolds - with far-reaching consequences.

BoreOfWhabylon · 26/12/2020 20:50

Thanks Asking

No Alice in the cast list. Hmmm...

MaryLeeOnHigh · 26/12/2020 22:24

If people are being "plunged" into a nightmare and "up to their armpits in a swamp of problems" is this the sinkhole reappearing?

PoulePouletteEternellement · 26/12/2020 22:37

Just leaving this here ... (Perfectly safe to open!)
