Thursday again.... Next week's offerings are

BBC one-liners
01 June Emma attempts to balance life and Ben gets an unexpected history lesson.
02 June Susan puts her foot in it and Ed prepares for battle.
03 June Susan faces the consequences and Ben hits the jackpot.
04 June Emma’s mind begins to race.

Writers: Nick Warburton & Sarah McDonald-Hughes
Director: Marina Caldarone
Editor: Jeremy Howe
Ben Archer: Ben Norris
Emma Grundy: Emerald O’Hanrahan
Ed Grundy: Barry Farrimond
Susan Carter: Charlotte Martin

Radio Times Ambridge Diary June 1-4
Many parents will empathise with Emma as she cooks up a storm in the Tearoom at the same time as trying to educate George and Keira. And tensions increase when Emma discovers Keira has been keeping something from her.
Ben is complaining about the restrictions on his life, but soon finds himself the pupil in an unexpected history lesson when he comes across some of Jill’s childhood mementoes. What will he discover about his beloved grandmother and how will it affect his future?
And despite the world being in flux, some things remain the same: Ed is facing a shearing battle with Jazzer. But he also has something on his mind involving Emma …

+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+

You know, I really don't think Emma is in any way qualified to "educate" George. She failed all her GCSEs eighteen years ago, and I doubt she has kept up with the subjects that she didn't learn then.

(And what has Keira been keeping from her? "Mummy, I can talk now"?)

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/05/2020 14:57

You know, I really don't think Emma is in any way qualified to "educate" George. She failed all her GCSEs eighteen years ago, and I doubt she has kept up with the subjects that she didn't learn then.
That puts her in the same boat as a lot of people, sadly.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 28/05/2020 15:30

He won't thank her for interfering from a position of complete ignorance -- just like any other fifteen-year-old who doesn't need an ignorant adult telling them how to do their school work. My father was frod all help towards my maths O-level, for instance, because he had never seen set theory in his life...

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/05/2020 17:32

He may not thank her, but what alternative is there? I can't tell you how glad I am that we never had to face anything like this when our children were younger, and my husband and I would have been a lot better equipped academically to do this than Emma and Ed. I love my daughter dearly and we are very close, but we had many a battle royal over my attempts to help/support her with her homework/piano practice/you name it. However, with variable input from school, there must be millions of parents trying at a minimum to ensure that their children are doing the work set, even if they can't help them to make sense of it/do it better or check whether they've got soemthing right.

Forgot to say thanks for the teasers!

OP posts:

Thanks Asking Ref. exams and education. One of the problems would be that maths is being taught in a totally different way now. That was the case when I was teaching primary school 15 years or so ago and it's probably changed again!.
The theories are not necessarily applicable to ALL children esp. in English. The phonetics obsession is one good example , some learn to read the 'whole book' way, some entirely by memory, while others use the pix to begin with. Phonetics are not helpful for all. My 3 were all reading before starting school anyway and I didn't push them. They of course had the opportunities at home.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 31/05/2020 14:18

A late addition:

Daily Mail Weekend Magazine Archers Update June 1-4
It looks like it’s going to be clippers at dawn as Ed and Jazzer ready themselves for a sheep shearing battle. The two of them are dab hands at this tricky job, and are gaining a reputation the length and breadth of Borsetshire for their deft work around the nether regions.
While they prepare their instruments, Emma cooks up a storm in the Tea Room while also trying to keep George and Keira’s interrupted education on track. This tricky teaching is made all the harder - and many a parent will sympathise here - by Keira keeping a key piece of information from Emma.
Ben, champing at the bit about the restrictions on his life, noses around Brookfield and finds a path to Jill’s past.

BoreOfWhabylon · 31/05/2020 17:56

Thanks you two!

ppeatfruit · 01/06/2020 09:02

Thanks Asking btw can you get the Radio Times ? It hasn't been delivered to our Presse here (in Fr.) for 3 weeks.

I listened to the Omnibus and noticed a deliberate non mention of the Covid word, a bit unrealistic considering you can't get away from it on all, or most, of the media. It wasn't funny, just silly IMO.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 01/06/2020 10:34

I haven't tried to find a hard-copy RT, ppeatfruit; I get this on-line.

ppeatfruit · 01/06/2020 12:17

Oh of course! Silly me I'm not a tecchie so it's not what comes straight to my mind! (it should do dh works online all the time , he suggested a while ago that I got the listings on here !).

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 04/06/2020 06:05

Radio Times Ambridge Diary June 8-11
This week the focus shifts to Bridge Farm, where everyone is trying to cope with the demand for veg boxes. When Helen is faced with a problem, Susan comes to the rescue with an idea, but it leaves Helen having to confront some demons from her past.
On a lighter note, Tony’s uncut hair is causing consternation within the family. But Tony himself is more worried about his grandson and ends up going too far - resulting in Johnny making a drastic decision.
Finally, Tom has a controversial plan that some members of his family don’t take to, while Natasha is struggling in light of recent events. Will she find a way through?

Daily Mail Weekend Magazine Archers Update June 8-11
Tony’s hair - unlike that of his nephew Johnny - is flourishing and, in these times of heightened sensibilities, that’s adding to the rising tensions at Bridge Farm, leading to a drastic decision.
They are working flat out there, trying to cope with the rising demand for veg boxes, then fighting their way through a mountain of excess stock. Susan Carter hatches a cunning plan to rescue the situation, but it’s a plan that will stir up Helen’s past, leaving Borsetshire’s leading cheese-maker wondering whether to sacrifice her peace of mind for the sake of her business.
Tom is also a man with a plan, but it doesn’t go down well with the rest of his branch of the Archers clan.

ppeatfruit · 08/06/2020 10:23

Thank you Asking Oh dear Johnny's problem with his hair is now taking centre stage Hmm.

ppeatfruit · 11/06/2020 14:31

Now we've got Helen's neurosis which will of course be sorted by the end of the week. Why are they all doing monologues? They could have a couple of actors together , on screens or whatever. It's boring and I'm not easily bored.

WrongSortOfListener · 12/06/2020 10:44

Tony's grandson not nephew.

Thanks @AskingQuestionsAllTheTime.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 12/06/2020 11:27

WrongSortOfListener
Tony's grandson not nephew.

Yes; I have seen that being got wrong before, but didn't notice it this time. Thank you.

And it's Friday, so I'll put up next week's gathered stuff and then the Daily Mail when/if I get sent it.

BBC One-Liners 15-18 June
15 June Lilian is on a mission and Justin finds himself feeling redundant.
16 June Kate faces an uphill battle and Jakob makes the most of his present situation.
17 June There’s a shock in store for Kate while Lilian considers her relationships with those closest to her.
18 June Justin turns a corner.

Radio Times Ambridge Diary June 15-18
If there’s one person who was always going to handle lockdown with aplomb, it’s Lilian. As long as she could get hold of the basics (gin and fags), all would be well. The same cannot be said, though, of Justin, who’s desperately missing his normal wheeling and dealing. So when he starts to test Lilian’s patience, she tries to find him a distraction …
Someone else finding things tough is Kate, who’s struggling to stay sane in the company of Peggy and Hilda. However, there’s a surprise in store for her and Jakob, which comes after the latter takes the opportunity to put his life in order. But how will the two of them react to the unexpected news?

=#=#=#=#=#=#=#=#=#=#=#=#=#=#=#=#=#=#=#=#=#=#=

I should think having to spend all day every day with Lilian is what is really wrong with Justin.

If Kate doesn't like Peggy's company she ought to have thought twice about making her the next in the long line of people Kate has scrounged bed and board off for her entire life so far.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 13/06/2020 14:02

Daily Mail Weekend Magazine Archers Update 15-18 June
Cocktails, face cream and phoning Fabrice for advice about her roots have kept Lilian busy during lockdown.
She has, of course, a wealth of warm memories to mull over, bringing many a smile to her lips, and a dirty laugh to her throat. In fact, a whole range of emotions have been able to register on Lilian’s face now that the New Year Botox has leaked from her system. Despite this, all is not well at the Dower House, where Justin is champing at the bit, clumping around the house and grating on Lilian’s nerves.
Lilian comes up with a scheme to distract him, but will it work?

ppeatfruit · 14/06/2020 12:58

Thank you Asking . it's good that they're tying up some loose ends; with Johnny shaving his head. The explanation that Natasha's Dad is polar, so that could be an explanation to why she 'left' Tom straight after their wedding.

Helen's love for Lee is sweet.

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/06/2020 10:47

According to next week's Radio Times, we will finally be getting back to Philip and his 'horses'. At last.
