Archers thread #114: Bull banished, Bali beaches beckon, bickering bullshitters burgeon

Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like Gavin to stay around, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks for all thread title suggestions! I've gone with a B theme which with a bit of luck will seem odd and irrelevant by the end of this thread. Here's hoping, anyway.

Haven't caught up with tonight's episode yet, so off to do that shortly.

When Kirsty and Philip decided to get married in secret, they were going to get a couple of witnesses off the street, so I was surprised to hear Kirsty invite Helen. They risk the news leaking out, causing the very problems they were trying to avoid. Susan is especially likely to guess, and broadcast her guess far and wide.

Helenluvsrob · 02/02/2020 09:00

Anyone else think this is a game and the moment he weeedles the Bali money out of Phil he’ll reconcile with what’s her name ?

Meantime we will have several nasty scenes. Already done kathys rape but given how common it is we are almost certainly due another one ( though Helen I guess counts In the stars 😢)

SurpriseSparDay · 02/02/2020 09:43

A few people have mentioned that possibility above, Helenluvsrob.Grin (And called me a foolish innocent for not wanting to believe it could be so!) His snivelling was very unconvincing - but I put that down to the actor’s limitations rather than Gavin’s Machiavellian mind.

The bastard came so close to physically attacking Kirsty when she discovered him going through her wardrobes - I do believe that will get worse.

BeaLola · 02/02/2020 09:44

I think that Kirsty is being nice for Philips sake to let Gav stay there and also because she herself knows how awful it is for things to fall apart . What I didn't get was why he didn't go to his Mums ?

Something that has been concerning me is that did Lee say Helen had bought him membership of Grey Gables for Christmas gift - seems a little over generous ?

Langsdestiny · 02/02/2020 09:45

Not playing into any stereotypes at all then. Rapist = pantomime villain, easy to spot.

Langsdestiny · 02/02/2020 09:45

I do realise that I am now getting irritated with TA about things they havent yet done.

SurpriseSparDay · 02/02/2020 09:49

why he didn't go to his Mums ?

She has less money.

She’s not in The Archers.

Paintingtheroseswhite · 02/02/2020 09:57

Its much easier to rifle through wardrobes looking for something or delve into a laptop if you are living in the house. Gav's looking for something (bank account access details?) and this is his way of getting it.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 02/02/2020 11:56

Oh, that makes sense out of it! I couldn't think why he would want to be there at all.

Motoko · 02/02/2020 14:43

Well, if someone went on my laptop, they wouldn't be able to access my bank account, because it doesn't have a saved password as such. It asks for specific letters from my password (such as 2nd, 5th, and 9th) which changes each time, and now they also send a code to my phone that I also have to enter, before I can see the account. I'd be dubious that Gavin would have much luck there, although the SWs aren't known for their accuracy.

inkysplatter · 02/02/2020 15:16

Hello all, only just caught up. Although still a few minutes left to listen so haven't heard Gavin yet.
Surely he's not gone to his mum because she lives in Wales and he works with Phil? As well as being up to no good.

Poor Kirsty, I hate all this. Donkeys years ago I was threatened (not sexual just really aggressive) by my boyfriend's friend in his house and it took me a year to tell him. I'd just been promoted to be the friend's boss and i think it upset his fragile male ego. I remember feeling so hollow and squirmy. When I finally did tell bf he was furious with the soon-to/be ex friend, but I didn't feel comfortable saying it out loud sooner, so I get why Kirsty can't.

I think it's important to have female characters who aren't mothers, but I wish they'd give Kirsty a baby. Hannah would be my preferred candidate to not procreate.

My children are little so perhaps I'm just not there yet, but I'm sure I'd have them back home at any age. I know my family would with me. In fact my mum still mentions it from time to time, bless her. I know it's different here because Gav's a total bastard and he and Kirsty aren't family (etc) but ostensibly I'd think it was fine. Confessing here, but I'd have a problem with a partner who has a problem with my children being around.

Motoko · 02/02/2020 16:05

Well, you can understand why Kirsty might not be happy having Gavin there. Not all sweet little children grow up into lovely adults, regardless of their parenting.

whataboutbob · 02/02/2020 16:49

Hello all. Just a niggle, not re Kirsty and Phil. Re Ruth and David and them having to host ghastly Vince “mince” Casey’s brats’s wedding. Have they forgotten that Ruth inherited 1/2 a million from Heather pet? Apologies if I missed anything, I’m new here.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 02/02/2020 17:39

She went to New Zealand with some of it, and put the rest into a pension fund she is apparently unable to touch.

UntamedWisteria · 02/02/2020 19:21

Was there any mention of Brexit day at all in recent episodes?

odd not to even acknowledge it ... unless I missed it.

inkysplatter · 02/02/2020 19:36

I totally agree Motoko. I just mean I imagine I'd want to open my doors to my children at any time so have sympathy for the awkward dynamic.
I also think Gavin is a creep and should go for a long walk off a short pier to a hotel.

Love Mince Casey* (just the mince not the man.)
How can David not see the negging that should be visible from space. I hate the David and Ruth barn wedding storyline and I hope the venture is a fiasco. I can't think of a pair worse suited to hospitality. They lecture Josh about good business practice when the pair of them are a shower of sh... total shambles.

whataboutbob · 02/02/2020 19:42

Askingquestions, I missed Ruth’s financial planning. Maybe it’s time to start digging into the pension pot...I agree vince’s manoeuvres are visible from miles away. It’s a weak story line.

theThreeofWeevils · 02/02/2020 19:44

Yes, but tough titty: it's not her house in any meaningful sense.

Neat touch that she is reduced to hiding in the utility room having hushed phone calls with Helen. Quite the reversal.

R4 · 02/02/2020 19:47

They lecture Josh about good business practice when the pair of them are a shower of sh... total shambles.
Hang on a minute! ...
Mr Smooth Talking Salesman is out of a business job. The Dopeys are rubbish at this wedding stuff and not enjoying it. Putting two and two together and getting five: is Josh going to take over the wedding planning from them on a full time basis, in lieu of the dodgy dealing? Added bonus: it will free up some of Rex's time so he and Neil can join forces in piggery.

PS. I told Kirsty she should lay down some House Rules.

Travelledtheworld · 02/02/2020 20:03

How old is Gavin? 12?

CanYouSmellMyCharlie · 02/02/2020 20:22

FISH!

AGAIN ShockGrin

echt · 02/02/2020 20:23

The very idea of Gavin sitting in a shared space in his underpants.

Bleurgh.

MikeUniformMike · 02/02/2020 20:37

The barn weddings was Ben's idea.

JustPutThemBackAfterwards · 02/02/2020 20:38

Depends on the body Wink

Boxers can be quite fetching.....

JustPutThemBackAfterwards · 02/02/2020 20:48

Why did Kirsty think that what Philip said to Gavin was so tactless/inappropriate?

I don't think 'plenty more fish in the sea' was that unreasonable.

And Gavin wouldn't recognise tact if it came up and slapped him round the chops with a kipper.
