Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like Alf to stay around, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @DoctorTwo for the thread title! I was strongly tempted by R4's suggestion of Wildlife on Four: Jonneh is wild at Lily, Phoebe rewilds by Occam, Joy is in the wilderness and David is bewildered by a marriage proposal. Grin

So we did make it past Joe's funeral at last. Are we heading for a Christmas octogenarian wedding now?

Fruit has no place in a stew.

Rabbit with prunes? I had this recently, it was delicious.
Tagine with preserved lemon or apricots? Yum!
Curry with raisins? No.
Cranberries, sausage and lentils? Vom.

CMR has merely added a Yuletide festive note to this recipe:

DoctorTwo · 22/11/2019 09:31

Blimey Charlie, I got quoted in the title! :o I'm well happy about that, I think it might be the first time ever. Not listened for a week or so as the place I'm babysitting has a shit signal and BBC Sounds/iPlayer won't let me sign up, so this thread is how I get updates.

MikeUniformMike · 22/11/2019 09:32

My comment about fruit was in response to Pierrettelasanguinaire.
I don't really eat stew, but tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, courgettes, squash, etc are fruit and they're tasty in a curry.

ppeatfruit · 22/11/2019 09:46

I'm not suggesting they're not tasty , just that they give me bellyache and follow on arthritis! As do the deadly nightshade veg. I prefer to walk than eat those veg\fruit. I like courgettes though.

birdsdestiny · 22/11/2019 10:41

I agree Lillian its nonsensical. A similar situation happened where I live and in fact it was the students who were the most hostile towards the man. Their comments were viscious.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 22/11/2019 11:36

Vicious or Viscous?

Mud sticks, you know Grin

Chicken and rhubarb stew. Though technically, rhubarb isn't fruit anyway.

Toooldtobearsed2 · 22/11/2019 14:13

I have just read that the actor who plays Tony (Colin Skipp), has died.
He had such a distinctive voice, but a lot of the cast are getting on in years now, so I suppose there will be a few exit lines to write 😑
R.I.P Colin Skipp

inkysplatter · 22/11/2019 14:15

On an unrelated note, I think whenever CMR leaves LL (hopefully sooner rather than later) it will be harder on Elizabeth than Lilly. As awful as he is, and as unbelievable as their relationship is, it must on some level be nice to have another adult around. She's been a widow for so long, just chatting around the house to someone in a familial way (who isn't your dependent) must be helpful. I suspect his departure will lead to her dipping her toe in the water again.

I don't see how anyone can blame a teenage girl for being groomed by a teacher. People are always forgetting than it's actually not very hard to not date someone or not have sex with someone you shouldn't. There is no excuse for his abuse of position.

Beveren · 22/11/2019 14:32

Freddie was the one who went out and got a menial job fruit-picking during the summer two years running while Lily lived happily on the allowance that her mother gave her.

But then, you could turn that round. Freddie was the one who ignored his studies to earn money while Lily got her head down and worked for decent GCSE and A level qualifications.

I don't think Lily makes herself out to be a saint. Far too often she comes second because she has to rally round because of something stupid Freddie has done. Sure, she tries to keep things that she knows her mother will disapprove of quiet, but show me one teenager who doesn't do that. Freddie wasn't exactly publicising his drugselling activities, after all.

Beveren · 22/11/2019 14:34

I do hope that, when CMR tries to "direct" Jim in his ghost story reading, Jim squelches him very thoroughly.

Does anyone know whether the BBC intends to broadcast the ghost stories, in the same way as they broadcast The Canterbury Tales? It sounds as if it could be quite good.

DadDadDad · 22/11/2019 14:38

Tooold - just to be clear, Colin Skipp retired as the actor playing Tony a few years ago, so the current voice (David Troughton) will continue.

Toooldtobearsed2 · 22/11/2019 14:41

Oh. I am so sorry! I listen to The Archers, but do not know their real names, so totally misunderstood the headline saying 'actor who played Tony Archer dies'.

Sorry 😶

DadDadDad · 22/11/2019 14:49

No need to apologise - I'm sure many will remember "old" Tony and will be sad to hear of the actor's death.

MissBarbary · 22/11/2019 17:49

I don't see how anyone can blame a teenage girl for being groomed by a teacher

Who is blaming her? There's a difference between blaming her and suggesting that actually Lily might want to consider her actions and accept some responsibility for them. She's happy enough to bask in praise (even when it's not deserved)Lily seems to get off scot free with loads of excuses being made for her no matter how badly behaves.

MissBarbary · 22/11/2019 17:51

On another matter cranberries with venison sausages- fine. Venison sausages with lentils- fine. Venison sausages with cranberries and lentils- yuk.

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/11/2019 18:01

I agree with @MissBarbary it's the combination of cranberries and lentils that is wrong.

Paintingtheroseswhite · 22/11/2019 18:15

My mother in law used to put apple in curries. It still makes me shudder

NewName73 · 22/11/2019 18:26

They will need to be puy lentils. With sausages. It wouldn't work with orange ones.

NewName73 · 22/11/2019 18:27

People also used to have sliced banana in curries. Truly revolting.

SurpriseSparDay · 22/11/2019 18:28

Gosh, that clip of Tony finding John is still horribly affecting. (Just played on Radio 4 PM.)

Deserves many retrospective BOOPs.

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/11/2019 18:37

Yes. I can still remember it, there was no theme music at the end.

SurpriseSparDay · 22/11/2019 19:07

Ok - that settles it. Phoebe runs a car so she must be receiving an allowance from ... Kate? Brian? Roy?Halloween Hmm Hayley?Halloween Hmm Mike?Halloween Confused
