Archers Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like Alf to stay around, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3439443-keep-it-to-yourself-the-archers-spoilers-thread-4, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Thanks to @DoctorTwo for the thread title! I was strongly tempted by R4's suggestion of Wildlife on Four: Jonneh is wild at Lily, Phoebe rewilds by Occam, Joy is in the wilderness and David is bewildered by a marriage proposal. Grin

So we did make it past Joe's funeral at last. Are we heading for a Christmas octogenarian wedding now?

Peggy's money - comes from the Magic Money Fairy, of course. She's a capricious one as she has mysteriously taken all the money Ed and Em had saved for their house.

Spar, Re AG - I have read one or two but we should probably take this to another thread.

"Bake" as a noun goes back to at least 1789, BertrandRussell, but maybe it being used in Scotland all this time doesn't count?

And while it may be important for Helen to find happiness, shouldn't she find herself a man to kiss who is not already going out with somebody else? Even if we listeners may think Leanne doesn't exist, Helen presumably thinks that she does, and deliberately setting out to nick off with someone else's fellah is bad behaviour, not to mention that I was always told that a man who will cheat on his partner for you will be just as happy to cheat on you for another woman a bit further down the line. She ought to have learned better from her experience of deciding to take Rob away from his wife and how well that went, anyhow.

BertrandRussell · 09/12/2019 10:32

“ AskingQuestionsAllTheTime”

Context? For “bake” I mean- not for Lee and Helen.

MissBarbary · 09/12/2019 10:32

I've lived in Scotland for over 60 years- apart from the (fairly recent?) concept of "tray bakes" ,which isn't limited to Scotland, I've never come across "bake" being usedas a noun. In what context is it used?

MissBarbary · 09/12/2019 10:35

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime I fully agree with your second paragraph. That should raise red flags with Helen.

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 09/12/2019 10:54

“Bake” as a noun sort of grated on me too, though I was trying to think what they might have said instead and I wasn’t sure -“baked goods” is American, maybe “the baking” or just naming the things eg “we can’t have GWOC without mince pies and Christmas cake”?

I decided to be at peace with it because (a) people do say it now cos of Bake Off and Emma and Clarrie would doubtless be avid watchers and (b) it probably saved a few seconds of airtime into which more meaningful stuff could be squeezed (the Clarrie/Emma scene was generally lovely.

I’m afraid I don’t recall anyone ever saying it in Scotland and I had two very active baking Grannies born in the 1920s.

BertrandRussell · 09/12/2019 10:58

I’ve never heard anyone say “put the bakes in the freezer” Clarrie would have said “Put the mince pies in the freezer”

MissBarbary · 09/12/2019 12:25

I've never heard anyone say “put the bakes in the freezer”

I'm furth of Scotland for a few days. Husband was instructed he could put the scones in the freezer if he couldn't eat them all but the melting moments would have to go in a tin.

BertrandRussell · 09/12/2019 12:35

Oh I love a Melting Moment! I might make some.....

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/12/2019 13:07

Please share MM recipe - I love them and haven't had one for years!

MissBarbary · 09/12/2019 13:17

This is my one.

Putting the biscuit mix in a bag and piping it on to the tray is a complete waste of time- just use a teaspoon.

Fink · 09/12/2019 13:20

I don't know where Peggy's millions came from, but I do know that she's no longer paying for Christine to live at The Laurels, that was sorted out between Christine and her son when the move became permanent. The exact details were never disclosed, and I can't remember whether or not Christine had to fess up to Peter (?) about where her money had gone, but somehow or other her finances were sorted and Peggy was relieved of her 'obligation'. It was dealt with very quickly and never mentioned since.

What's a melting moment? Is it SFW to Google?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/12/2019 13:33

My mum used to make melting moments. This recipe seems close to what I remember but I think she sandwiched them with buttercream. No coconut. I would have remembered that as I can't stand desiccated coconut. www.rampantscotland.com/recipes/blrecipe_melting.htm

Yes even passionfruit melting moments are safe.

BertrandRussell · 09/12/2019 13:40

That’s very similar to my MM recipe, except sometimes I pipe mine into little rosettes and sandwich with buttercream. Or roll them into balls and roll the balls In porridge (sorry, I mean porage) oats. Oh, and I use 2 small egg yolks instead of a whole egg.

stripeypillowcase · 09/12/2019 13:40

I totally would buy a cd of jim reading scary stories!

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/12/2019 13:43

An Australian friend used to make them using Birds custard powder - that's the recipe I'd really like!

BertrandRussell · 09/12/2019 13:44

Bother. Forgot I wasn’t speaking to @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g because of her heretical views on Peter Wimsey.... Kx

BertrandRussell · 09/12/2019 13:49

BoreofBabylon- try the same recipe but replace the cornflour with custard powder.

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/12/2019 13:58

Thanks Bert Flowers

Thank you Gasp0 Flowers
They look very like the ones my friend used to make

Chemenger · 09/12/2019 14:41

My mum’s melting moments definitely had custard powder in them and were sandwiched with buttercream no coconut involved.
