Radio 4 might be a good place to look. I like Witness history and In our Time, but there are lots that focus on certain events. Pandemic (I think it was called) was about the 1918 flu and the effects+consequences it had all over the world. Hidden Brain has lots of very interesting episodes that I'm sure you might find interesting, as does Radiolab and This American Life. You'd have to a look back through the catalogue to find the ones most up your street, but there are loads I found really interesting (though I'm struggling to name them here - one was about the famous Milgram experiments with the electric shocks and it was great). The Radiolab spin-off More Perfect had some fascinating episodes about the struggle for equal rights, though it's focused on the US. Revisionist History with Malcolm Blackwell has just started another series. The latest have been about Jesuit thinking and how Dr John Rock used it to try to convince the Catholic Church that the birth control pill (which he developed) should be accepted. Freakonomics too - it just revisited the link it presented between Roe v Wade and the decrease in crime. Not sure if any of that is the type of thing you mean though!
