Did anyone else like Bleak Expectations?

All the “Rory Stewart took opium” stuff has reminded me of Pip becoming an opium fiend. Was anyone else a fan? It was so brilliantly daft!

Yes! Loved it - but I love Gloomsbury even more!

MikeUniformMike · 09/06/2019 18:13

Yes.

PaneerOfEvil · 09/06/2019 18:31

What’s Gloomsbury? Is it on R4?

Gloomsbury has been on R4, but not at the moment. It also pops up on R4xtra now and again.

If you liked Bleak Expectations, you should enjoy this!

You can gel the whole of Bleak Expectations for one Audible credit. Between me and my DC (12 & 8) I think we’ve listened to it more than anything else we own.

Off to explore Gloomsbury...

LassOfFyvie · 09/06/2019 20:48

I loved Bleak Expectations and Gloomsbury.

cornflakegirl · 09/06/2019 20:55

Loved Bleak Expectations! Thanks for the tip about Audible. Will have to look out for Gloomsbury.

SisterMaryLoquacious · 09/06/2019 20:58

I loved Bleak Expectations. Anthony Stewart Head is clearly having the time of his life. Didn’t listen to it originally but have listened to them all on R4 Extra repeats. There’s a book adaptation as well which is quite fun.

PaneerOfEvil · 09/06/2019 21:34

Thanks Cat.

And brilliant tip Barbara!

Agree that both Bleak Expectations and Gloomsbury are fabulous.

Madcats · 10/06/2019 15:02

We binge-listened to them in the car one Summer; I'm not sure our pre-teen DD has been the same since!

Hut 33 and Cabin Pressure were brilliant too.

DH might over-complicate our home IT at times, but he does have a knack for sourcing good R4 stuff and scheduling it to download.

Wanders of to see whether we have Gloomsbury - don't remember that

YesThisIsMe · 10/06/2019 15:38

Hut 33 is worth listening to for Olivia Colman - bits of the rest are a bit flaky though.

I enjoy listening to repeats of Old Harry’s Game. Slightly more obscure, but worth a try is Angstrom; it’s a spoof of Scandi noir as written by a British hack sourcing all his local colour from Wikipedia.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 13/06/2019 18:01

Did any of you manage to track down Gloomsbury?

If so, what do you think?

nauticant · 15/07/2019 11:04

I'm late coming to this but Gloomsbury is just marvellous.

It helps if you've got an acquaintance with the milieu, a browse of Virginia Woolf's wikipedia page should help.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 23/09/2019 19:44

There's an episode of Bleak Expectations on 4Xtra tonight (23 Sep) at 10:30.

SamBeckett · 11/10/2019 00:11

I like bleak expectations,
old Harry's Game,
cabin Pressure,
one of my favourites is on at the moment ( radio 4extra ) is the Masterson inheritance,
I don't like gloomsbury much

EBearhug · 11/10/2019 00:14

There have been a lot of trailers about some programme with Sue Limb, mentioning the Wordsmiths of Gorsemere and Gloomsbury, so that could prompt some replays on not iPlayer but Sounds...

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 11/10/2019 10:58

Yes, I was going to mention that aswell, EBearhug.

It's a three hour programme all about Sue Limb, with choice episodes of her best work.

Tomorrow morning (Saturday) 9 am until midday, and again in the evening 7 pm until 10 pm.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 11/10/2019 11:00

Aaaagh! Forgot to say! Blush

It's on Radio 4Extra.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 18/11/2019 19:47

Series 3 of Bleak Expectations starts tonight at 10:30, on Radio 4Extra.

Don't know if it's a completely new series, or a re-run of an old one, but whichever it is, it's worth a listen Grin

BuckingFrolics · 09/02/2020 13:50

Babblewick Hall was very enjoyable. Available on Sounds.
