Archers

No, that's not a jokey exaggeration, this is really the 93rd thread in a series started by PseudoBadger five years ago! In fact, post number Star 90,000 Star in the "official" count will be made on this thread.

Archers

Lovers of The Archers welcome (along with the rest of us who have a more complicated relationship with the "TA" Smile).

One rule we try to stick to: No mentioning of future episode plotlines published in the Radio Times etc. However, once an episode has aired, say what you like!

Archers

What is going to happen to Freddie? And are we ever going to hear from Lily again?
I also am wondering what it will take for Kenton to apologise to Fallon...

The milk round doesn’t exist any more, does it? Do you mean in Ambridge or more generally? Our town has at lest two milk rounds operating. Though I'm finding really difficult to get proper ie non-homogenised milk.

On actuaries - I always liked the comment that actuary was the profession chosen by people who wanted to be accountants but were worried that accountancy was too exciting.

Reminds me of the old Yellow Pages - if you looked up "boring" the entry read "see Civil Engineers". A useful counter to CE colleagues who trotted out the old "lies, damned lies..." to me.

LillianGish · 09/10/2018 16:54

I'm wondering now if Johnny might find out about Tom and Hannah and then not feel quite so bad reciprocating when Natasha makes a move on him (on the basis that some posters seem to think she's got a soft spot for him). Whatever happens I think it's safe to say that the trysts with Hannah will be Tom's undoing. Not particularly enjoying this particular storyline - I'd put it on a par with Pip and and the Fairbrethren. I'm finding it almost impossible to believe that Tom is well on the way to 40 - he sounds about 18 (well same age as Johnny anyway - certainly not a different generation).

"Well, I hope she and Tom do get together and he goes off to help with her empire leaving Helen and Johnny in place at bridge farm."

yes, this, Bridge Farm has too many djs and not enough mikes. and unfortunately Helen won't be going anywhere as she has thoughtfully birthed the next generation. Tom has always been more about branding and marketing than actual farming anyway, and he enjoys a woman who shares this thrilling interest. Hopefully Natasha is a bit better at it than that time when Brenda was wandering around randomly bellowing about TOM ARCHER SAUSAGES and how great they were. Maybe this weird Hannah thing will be part of a long game storyline where it all blows over for now but rears its head the week before they eventually get married or something. Because Tom is physically incapable of going out with people and then having a normal wedding like a normal person.

"Pockets were originally small bags held round your waist on a ribbon, rather than an integral part of a particular item of clothing. (Hence "Lucy Lockett lost her pocket.")"

Bumbags are the modern version of this, and good news for fans of looking like you're wearing a bumbag: they are BACK BACK BACK ladies, so form an orderly queue

ErrolTheDragon · 09/10/2018 18:01

I once had to explain to the head of lower school that there was a simple reason why girls such as myself lost their dinner tickets far more often than boys. It had never occurred to him that a tunic with one small pocket (just about big enough for an hanky at least) was significantly inferior to trousers and a blazer.

Fink · 09/10/2018 19:12

Big BOOP for Joe, 'you and your cronies'.Grin

DressesWithPockets · 09/10/2018 20:18

I would love it if there was a pocket related storyline/reference now!

How confident are we that the sw read this thread? Is there any evidence?

Oh and thanks EBearHug for the pockets trivia. Fascinating. (Says the woman with a degree in historical linguistics.)

MrsGrindah · 09/10/2018 21:02

Has anyone seen the current Alexa ad .. the leaning tower of Pisa one? I’m convinved the voice over is Hannah

DadDadDad · 09/10/2018 21:05

I think it's more a joke than a serious suggestion that the SWs read this. But maybe the odd one does dip into the internet and picks up some ideas. I guess if a pocket-related story comes up, we'll know.

If we hear Christine, once she’s back on her feet, say she wishes she had pockets in her skirt as it’s so awkward not having them when you are using a Zimmer frame we’ll know SW look for hints. My granny used to hang a string bag on the front of her’s.

EBearhug · 10/10/2018 00:12

historical linguistics

That sounds pretty fascinating, too.

QuaterMiss · 10/10/2018 06:20

It does.

Way back in the 80s, when I was a history undergrad, linguistics was clearly where all the cool, French intellectuals hung out. History seemed like a dusty backwater. I was quite often to be found sitting on the floor in the linguistics section of Blackwells poking my nose into what didn’t concern me.

My new winter frock has the coolest pocket ever. Something like this ...

Minimammoth · 10/10/2018 07:24

A couple of my friends started to wear a belt with a pocket last year, trend setters that they are ( both in their 70s)

QuaterMiss · 10/10/2018 07:47

I do think it’s interesting the way heightened fear of (experience of?) street violence is translated into fashion. My habitual large over arm tote bag suddenly seems incredibly old-fashioned.

Going back to TA: I’ve decided Horrid Hannah looks like the (no doubt perfectly nice) model in the photo above.

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 10/10/2018 08:14

My husband started (but did not finish) a Ph.D. in Historical Linguistics a long, long time ago. Back then it was a backwater. The cool kids in his department were all working on something I can't now remember but it had to do with Chomsky and if you couldn't accept whatever theory it was your prospects of getting through your Ph.D. and getting a job were poor. Or so it seemed to me on the odd occasion I chatted to them at parties.

I've got a tunic from White Stuff I'm very fond of which has good big patch pockets on the front. Very practical.

I bet Hannah goes for practical clothes with pockets - at work, anyway.

I enjoyed last night's episode a lot. The SWs are playing with us over Home Farm. We all know in the end Brian and Jennifer will end up staying there (at least I hope so) but all these wild schemes for converting it into a health farm, rehab clinic, open prison, high secure psychiatric hospital etc etc are very amusing. (I may have made all some of the foregoing up but I hope it gives the SWs ideas.)

I also enjoyed Joe and Eddie scamming Justin out of the portaloo, particularly his demand that there should be no plaque put on it. Grin

QuaterMiss · 10/10/2018 08:40

Postmodernism, Tiger? I first heard the term in regard to my Chomsky browsing.

I was seriously tempted to swap subjects (though I can’t recall if it was an undergrad subject) but could never understand the theoretical arguments. In the end I gave up all hope of an intellectual life and switched to Law. (That went well. Hmm )

glamorousgrandmother · 10/10/2018 08:41

I also enjoyed Joe and Eddie scamming Justin out of the portaloo, particularly his demand that there should be no plaque put on it. but who will empty it - and where?

echt · 10/10/2018 08:51

There is so going to be a plaque storyline.

TigerDrankAllTheWaterInTheTap · 10/10/2018 08:52

Oh come on, glamorous, Clarrie will happily take on this extra job on top of the several million she already has. Hmm

No, it wasn't postmodernism. Transactional analysis? What I heard about it made my brain hurt so I have done my best to forget it (not hard).

R4 · 10/10/2018 08:55

I do think it’s interesting the way heightened fear of (experience of?) street violence is translated into fashion.

Ah, so that's why we have no fashion sense round these parts. If we had streets (instead of spending our lives in the car) we could be cutting-edge, too.

ppeatfruit · 10/10/2018 11:00

Quater I think I heard people in the Bull saying "who's that pretty blonde over there?" they were referring to Hannah.

BOOP for Eddie and Joe trying to get one over on the oily 'squire' of Ambridge Justin . They should give him a discounted membership for life of the Cider Club to pay for the portaloo!!

Getabloominmoveon · 10/10/2018 17:43

Hannah aka Helen Longworth looks exactly as I'd expected - bonny and assertive.

Getabloominmoveon · 10/10/2018 17:43

btw, what does BOOP mean?

DadDadDad · 10/10/2018 18:32

BOOP is named after user BitOutOfPractice, who complained that posters were only making negative points about The Archers. So a BOOP is a positive point, showing we can offer praise.
