Thanks, R4, for the title (again!).

I'm your temporary host while PseudoBadger is on her sabbatical / prison term / secret mission.

Old hands and complete newbies all welcome.

Spoilers (eg Radio Times descriptions of future programmes) not welcome.

When will Matt reappear? Before / during / after the wedding?

The floor is yours...

So that's 3 of us who've gone off Davis since hearing TB!

BertrandRussell · 28/10/2017 14:56

Shula will just wear the better of her two cardigans.

BertrandRussell · 28/10/2017 14:57

Or put a lace shirt and some diamonds on with her good tweed skirt.

You are Lady Keeble and ICMUK5!

TheAntiBoop · 28/10/2017 15:38

Explains why David always has an air of exasperation and can't be arsedness

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 28/10/2017 17:33

Bert that makes me think of Peter's Room and the odd aunt who wears tweed with a lace blouse 'but everyone else is lace all over, if you know what I mean'.

BertrandRussell · 28/10/2017 18:00

Seek-the £5 is yours. Sorry, CH8- close but no cigar!

C8H10N4O2 · 28/10/2017 19:27

Bert that makes me think of Peter's Room

Oh good call, you deserve the 5ukp
! Some of her books have been reprinted over the last year or two but sadly Peter's Room doesn't seem to be one. It amazes me that they ever went out of print as I no longer have all mine :(

Abra1d · 28/10/2017 19:29

We all like Kirsty, don’t we?!

Cromwell1536 · 28/10/2017 20:39

Sadly, black tie does age and go out of fashion, and yes, if you are going to rock this particular look, you should have more in mind than "Does it still fit?' this accounts for the seriously ropey appearance of middle-class men who should look better on these occasions, but don't. My brother has a DJ that needs shooting.

So, if you do have the kind of life where you need to wear black tie more than once a year, then yes, you really should spend money on a new one from time to time. And if this is the case then, congratulations: you're Bradley Cooper.

RolfNotRudolf · 29/10/2017 08:13

PSA - some of the cast will be on Steve Lamaq's show on Radio 6 this week - around 5 and 7 pm I think. Including Lily, Ed and Kirsty.

Mootsie · 29/10/2017 08:44

So is tonight the night?

After all this build up I hope the hunt ball lives up to expectations. Not sure what they are though.

DadDadDad · 29/10/2017 09:04

Cromwell - oh dear, my DJ is my Dad's old one, so it must be seriously out of fashion! I've never noticed and they all look the same to me. As I need a DJ probably less than once a year, I'm not that keen on buying a new one. I suppose there's always the hire route.

Am I the only person on the thread whose significant other has never had a dinner jacket? I doubt he's ever worn one, and if we were ever invited somewhere with a black tie dress code I suspect he'd decline on principle. I doubt very much whether my dad's ever had one either. He might have hired one once or twice decades ago.

My son has one. It was bought for a ball, but he found it useful when he was doing casual waiting work.

TheAntiBoop · 29/10/2017 10:12

Don't worry DDD - if you own it long enough it will have come into fashion a few times over the the years!

I guess owning one comes down to your social circle or your job.

Dh needed for both and it has been very handy for American weddings where it seems more the norm.

Gruach · 29/10/2017 10:21

A university boyfriend of mine (million years ago) inherited a white DJ from his grandfather. He used to wander around town in it, all day long. Lectures, riding his bike, going for a kebab, supervisions ...

Cromwell1536 · 29/10/2017 10:38

Well, there you have it Dad: this is what I'm talking about. I went to a black tie party recently - women all looked great, their blokes looked appalling. The young men looked good, because their DJs had been bought recently - weren't rusty, shiny, with horrible padded shoulders or poorly fitting. Please gents: make an effort!

ppeatfruit · 29/10/2017 11:01

I like the idea of an AC type murder at the HB tonight. His plus one will be ?????

I still can't quite understand why 2 old men are fighting over 70 year old Lilian who can't keep out of bed with her fiancé' and 2 very young lusty types are at LL eating mushrooms not DTD Grin Am I being ageist? Grin

R4 · 29/10/2017 11:19

Ha! Has the CA been reading this thread? He just said, "it's the Hunt Ball tonight. I must check to see if my dinner jacket still fits." Grin

cheminotte · 29/10/2017 11:55

It's typical clothing sexism really. Women are expected to have a new outfit for each social occasion, eg wedding. My brother has been wearing the same suit to weddings for the last 20 years. (He doesn't wear them for work).

Eastpoint · 29/10/2017 12:28

The clothes thing helps me realize that I am in fact a man, I assume I can wear an outfit as long as it fits me & suits me, regardless of how many other times I’ve worn it. Cambridge analytics looked at my FB and decided I’m a single gay man. (Married heterosexual mother of 3 in real life).

R4 · 29/10/2017 12:28

Is it sexism? I think that it is something that women impose on themselves. Men (especially the age that go to balls) don't give a hoot. In fact, they usually moan about the cost of new finery.

FWIW further to D^3's "my DJ is my Dad's old one", DD has worn a ballgown of mine that last had an outing about 25 years previously.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/10/2017 12:34

I think it's sexism. Men can get away with it. Women's appearance is subjected to a lot more scrutiny.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 29/10/2017 12:36

Is it sexism? I think that it is something that women impose on themselves

I think many women have a ridiculously over-inflated idea of how much attention people pay to their appearance.

Can you (general you) remember what other women were wearing at a particular event? I don't. Unless an outfit was spectacularly fabulous or spectacularly terrible no one will remember.

If it was the former then why not repeat it and if it was the latter who cares?

R4 · 29/10/2017 12:45

Can you (general you) remember what other women were wearing at a particular event? I don't.

Me neither. Perhaps we're the odd ones Lass.Smile I wouldn't wear the same dress to two balls in a row but I have recycled things with a, say, five year gap.
However, DH was watching some strange foreign language film last night and he - the most unobservant of men - noticed that the main (female) character wore the same clothes all the time. I explained that that is what the French do; they go for quality over quantity.
