Knew it was coming, but still feel so sad he has gone. Wonder how Eddie Mair held it together this afternoon - they had sounded so close all through the interviews. Feel Steve left a tremendous legacy in terms of emotional literacy in the way he talked about his illness, his treatment, the professionals and his own feelings.

Compelled to add my own thoughts - I admired his honesty, his straightforward approach. He was so utterly frank and forthright, never sentimental yet the interviews were always profoundly moving. I have no idea how Eddie Mair held it together, by the end of this evening's tribute I was in tears. Condolences to his family and friends. A great journalist. RIP.

Just such generosity from Steve Hewlett - to let the listening public in. He sounded so very tired last week. RIP

He went downhill so quickly :( as soon as I heard Eddie's voice tonight I had a lump and thought the worst had happened.

I have been really touched by his straight forward attitude, and his emotional literacy

Sadly (& sort of wrongly) his interviews with Eddie had become the radio highlight of my week. His Media Show was one of my favourites before that - he was a very incisive & challenging interviewer. First AA Gill & now Steve - two distinct voices lost to cancer in recent months. He will be missed (& he did so much for discussing cancer in the way.)

I agree it all moved so quickly at the end, up until the point when he married his partner, i felt there was still hope.

I heard his reports on PM. Can't believe it was so quick. Eddie Mair is a wonderful interviewer -(I have been interviewed by him) - and he was so lovely with Steve. I also used to listen to Steve on the media show. A sad loss.

I listened to one of his recent interviews (about his wedding) : the children and I all sat in the car on the drive to listen to the end of the programme as Steve was such a calm and captivating speaker. Very sad to hear today's news.

Very sad. The discussions with Mair were so moving. I had missed the last couple of weeks, last time I heard him was the interview in the hospital. immunotherapy sounds as though it will have enormous possibilities for treatment, thanks to people like Steve and my dear friend R who were willing to try it.

I hadn't really heard of him but my DP has the same cancer and we were shocked Steve went so so quickly!
DP was diagnosed in November 2015 and is currently quite well. My thoughts are with Steve's family.

My heart broke when I heard the news last night. RIP Steve. Love to all who knew him, and to Eddie.

Very, very sad. Like everyone else, even though I knew it was coming, I still gasped last night at the news. Kudos to Steve for sharing the experience with the world; RIP. And kudos too to Eddie Mair for such a wonderfully calming interview technique. Fantastic journalism all round.

Like many, I have been listening to the Monday series of interviews with Eddie Mair and have been touched and moved to tears most weeks. Steve Hewlett was a superb broadcaster, and seems to have been an all around great bloke.

My sympathies are with his family and friends.

Completely agree. The Monday interview on PM was appointment listening. Steve came across as a thoroughly decent, thoughtful, gentle man with not a single note of self pity. I loved him chuckling at or gently chiding Eddie for his jokes at his expense.

So very sad, I've been so 'enjoying' his Monday updates. It was so striking listening to last night's interview montage how his voice changed as the cancer and his treatment progressed. A wonderful man - brave, honest, funny, warm and so intelligent. I did feel for Eddie.

I heard most of the PM interviews and was very moved by them.

I can't help feeling, as so often seems to be the case, that it was the treatment that killed him (was it liver failure he died of?), as opposed to the cancer itself.

I first knew him as the presenter of the Media Show and he seemed to project a wordly wise kind of toughness- no doubt most appropriate when you are dealing with the media day in day out and used to extracting facts from those whose job it is to push a particular story.
He used those skills to great effect in researching his treatment options and dealing with the obfuscation doctors can dish out, and it is sad that despite all this he didn't get a good outcome

Scarymonster you must have a different perspective. Hope your DH is being well cared for and has a better outcome.

Shocking - lie many others on here, I listened to his fantastic Monday updates on my drive home. Also, like others, shocked how quickly this last stage has happened. His sons sounded great, but are still pretty young. So sad.

Eddie Mair's sign-off to the final piece on Monday was utter genius - a long story, cut short.

My DH also has the same cancer, diagnosed late Apr 16. He is also 58 and has late teenage & early twenties children. I'm also his 2nd partner, now wife. We were told a month ago that DH's cancer has started to spread further and he has been going steadily downhill since.
I've been aware of but not following Steve's story - but the similarities are striking.
My thoughts go out to his family.
