Ho ho ho! Will this thread last until Christmas?

OP posts:
Vango · 19/12/2016 14:44

But that's my point EBear. Jill can't say anything without Ruth overreacting. Would her response have been the same if anyone else had suggested tinsel?

TheAntiBoop · 19/12/2016 14:45

Ruth and pip are cut from the same cloth and are both hideous hypocrites

If I were Jill I would go and spend Xmas with carol or other grandchildren.

The whole Jill hating Toby thing is too much of a plot device for my liking. It doesn't come across right. Only saving grace is that it's likely Jill will be proved right!

DeepanKrispanEven · 19/12/2016 15:29

Have just heard "David, all I ever wanted was Christmas with our children. I don't have anyone else, do I?". She is really horrible.

Exactly. And it's pretty foul to suggest that Ben and Josh just aren't enough for her without the sainted Pip gracing their table.

It's not so long since she was happy for Pip to get a job which would have taken her abroad. She would presumably have coped without her at Christmas if that had gone ahead.

R4 · 19/12/2016 15:45

Pun intended?Grin

80sWaistcoat · 19/12/2016 16:05

I wonder if its being set up for Toby to get bored of Pip being sensible and working - buggering off to the pub for a boozy lunch and not coming back and Pip ending up at Brookfield anyway...

While Rob is doing something awful at Pat and Tony's.....

Hello hello hello
how are we all?
RL been getting in the way in a rather big way of my enjoyment of this thread.

Just thought I'd do a little plug in case any of you may be interested in the
Second ‘Academic Archers’ which takes place this February at University of Lincoln

A two-day symposium on Radio 4’s The Archers from a cohort of academics from all fields (pun intended)
February 2017 sees the second Academic Archers conference, this time held over two days and including a field trip. It will be hosted by the University of Lincoln where thirty-two academics from across the UK and beyond will deliver papers from a wide range of disciplines with a common theme: Radio 4’s The Archers.

The Archers in fact and fiction: Academic analyses of life in rural Borsetshire takes an academic perspective on life in Ambridge and Borsetshire, with papers from many academic disciplines covering themes including social media, education, religion, flower and produce shows, birdwatching, class and masculinity, eating disorders and dietary health, flood resilience, perceptions of physicality and family dysfunctionality.

The 2017 conference is dedicating a whole strand to the Helen and Rob story line, with papers covering coercive and controlling relationships, the disablement of Rob Titchener, nurturing traditional gender roles in The Archers, music and the ‘soundtrack to a stabbing’ and forensic Blood Pattern Analysis (BPA) at Blossom Hill Cottage. Other 2017 conference strands are ‘Genteel country hobbies?’, ‘Educating Ambridge’, ‘The geography of Ambridge’, ‘Power relationships’, ‘Bereavement and spirituality’ and ‘Ambridge online’.

Taking place over Friday 17th to Saturday 18th February 2017, the Friday evening sees a field trip to Rippingale in Lincolnshire for a talk and archive film revealing how the village inspired the original creation of The Archers, followed by dinner at The Bull Inn.

The symposium is organised on a voluntary basis by long-time fans of the programme, Dr Cara Courage and Dr Nicola Headlam, University of Oxford, joined this year by Prof Carenza Lewis of the University of Lincoln, who is hosting the conference.

Cara comments: ‘We are doing this out of a love for the programme, and of our subjects; the conference is intended to link the two to illuminate and explain life in Ambridge and use this to throw an interdisciplinary light on wider social issues too.’

Nicola continues: ‘Radio 4 is the natural habitat for academics when writing from home - and more than you might imagine are obsessives! This is reflected by the extraordinary breadth and quality of papers that we subjected to a co-produced peer review process. All papers have been scrutinised by a panel of 15 listeners - who proved extremely harsh reviewers indeed. Part of me thinks we must be mad to cram all the organisation of another conference and book around our day jobs - but the enthusiasm of The Archers fandom is infectious!'

Carenza adds ‘I’m delighted to host ‘Academic Archers’ 2017 at the University of Lincoln, both as an Archers’ fan of 30 years standing and because in casting new light on this iconic BBC series, the conference will make expert research accessible, exciting and relevant to wider audiences.’

news on all things Academic Archers can be found on its Facebook page

HQ disclaimer: Please note other conferences are available.
Though not with yours truly speaking at it. GrinGrin

Excellent news Olivia!

Truly excellent. StarWineFlowers

RockNRollNerd · 19/12/2016 16:41

Oh my goodness Olivia are you going to tell them all about us! Is DDD going to be there with his stats and as your powerpoint slave

How exciting!

R4 · 19/12/2016 16:58

Oooh, how involved are you, Your Presidentialness? Last year a few of us went but didn't really meet up til later in the day - this being an internet forum, we have no idea what each other looks like - when I asked them to do a shoutout for MNers. Could you ask them to do a similar getting-to-know-you at the beginning of the day. Or will there be a MN banner we can huddle under?

PuppetInParadize · 19/12/2016 16:59

Do you think Ben has been so busy with his mouth stuffed with cereal he's not been able to talk? Smile

And you heard it here first - I've booked to go to Lincoln for the mid-Feb event. DH is very jealous but he went to a uni reunion last year so my turn for a jaunt. Grin We have child care issues (technically adult sons with SNs care ishoos) so can't go together. But he's only annoy me so maybe just as well ......

mummytime · 19/12/2016 17:05

Oh Olivia! I'm so pleased your paper got through - was it the Cake one?

PuppetInParadize · 19/12/2016 17:13

That s in last sentence should be a d.

In a sense it's okay for Ruth to change her mind - she went to NZ last year and missed the family Xmas (she will think she had her reasons but she was really unkind to David especially by deciding at last minute to stay longer). What is really annoying is her manner (and manners) this year as if she feels everyone owes her a good Xmas. And her unpleasantness to Jill stinks too.

It would make my day if Jill packs up and moves to Shula's on Xmas Eve - and, yes, Toby will have to go to Brighton. Smile

PuppetInParadize · 19/12/2016 17:18

Sorry for that last garbled message. I think I'll give up and not try to do several things at once.Smile

PuppetInParadize · 19/12/2016 17:20

So I take it Olivia is really an Olivia so I'll know who she is in Lincoln. We should get a MN badge! A scarf is too subtle for me, I'm afraid.

Not involved in the official sense other than as a speaker. However, I'm sure we can arrange something to ensure folk can actually meet more easily - a badge may be a good idea. Those of you coming, please PM me and I can arrange something for us.

My paper is on social media and its importance for rural businesses.
Hadn't thought how useful DDD could be on that front. Grin
Now I've just got to write it.

Oh wow Olivia that's pretty cool. I'd like to go to this, I could only do a day though.

Vango · 19/12/2016 19:18

Bless. Love, love love Neil. Lovely bit of comic relief tonight.

DadDadDad · 19/12/2016 19:18

"Powerpoint slave"?! Shock

I'd be happy to help, Madam President, but I know nothing about social media and its impact on business. (Well, apart from what I've come across in my own field of life insurance).

It is true that I have strong aversion to bad powerpoint slides (by which I usually mean ones filled with text). If you want me to turn data into pictures that actually communicate (clear, meaningful graphs etc), I might be available.

DoctorTwo · 19/12/2016 20:27

I have a funny feeling that Kirsty has POAS and got a BFP. It was her refusal of a cheese thing and her empty glass that tickled my spidey senses.

Of course, this was speculated on ages ago. I thought, nah, too obvious.

R4 · 19/12/2016 21:04

Well spotted Dr2. They DTD on 16th September (thanks, Lowfield) which is just over 13 weeks ago.

enochroot · 19/12/2016 22:41

You might mention that rural broadband is disgracefully slow.......

PuppetInParadize · 19/12/2016 22:48

It would be rather fine to have a 'silent' pregnancy - one with no puking, and moaning, and the mother keeping well and active right up till the birth. Not that I'm saying people shouldn't do that IRL, just that that's how it's always portrayed on soaps, yet some RL women do have problem-free pregnancies and births, and it would b good to see that portrayed for a change. I suppose it's less of a story though.

I'm now worrying that I'll offend someone with that. Really I am not passing judgement - and anyway if you knew my history I wouldn't have a leg to stand on myself. Smile

PberryT · 19/12/2016 22:49

Kirsty is upduffed, refusing cheese and then an empty glass.
