Sorry for the poor title - the end of the last thread has arrived sooner than I thought and I haven't had the benefit of hearing all of the last 2 nights....

I feel Ian needs counselling to figure out why he is drawn to selfish people. Husband and best friend being two examples!

I have to say I am back to ignoring the kids for 15 mins every night again!! In the soc days I couldn't be bothered to listen. Amazing how quickly the change was effected!! We have heard from more people in the last fortnight than we have in socs last six months!!

"another chance "

triumph of hope over experience.

Well Adam wouldn't be my choice, but Ian married him so he must see some redeeming features.

Adam isn't very relationship mature imo. He seems to be one of those people who always feels that there's someone better for him out there. If only he could find them.

And I'm not really a love-conquers-all defender. Not am I excusing Adam's adulterous behaviour. But I am a believer that if you're going to aim for a lifetime together there will be problems along the way. I guess I think that talking about those problems to see if you can find a mutually-acceptable way forward is a better way of dealing with things than passive-aggression and stony silence.

I think that we are supposed to believe that Ian, the pillsbury doughboy, couldn't believe his luck when he landed Ada, with his rippling farmworker's muscles.
But Ada is getting a bit old to be a Chippendale, isn't he? (50 next year)

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 15/10/2016 11:51

Adam, Kate, Helen and Pip are all very, very similar in that they are incredibly selfish.

I'd add Tom to that list too. He's utterly self absorbed. But somehow his father is always willing to point that out to him. I actually feel a bit sorry for the would be sausage king as he is the one who seems to do most of the grunt work since Tony took his heart attack.

For his own sake I hope Johnny files the plague farm and heads back to Sharon and Eamon so seem to have done a great job of raising him.

R4 · 15/10/2016 12:03

Let Johnny finish his apprenticeship.

Then he can flee.Grin

Imbroglio · 15/10/2016 12:11

I think Adam would be happier if he had more autonomy at work. Brian is always sniping at him. Adam always comes over as a bit frustrated and fed up with himself.

R4 · 15/10/2016 12:24

The generational struggle is a TA perennial. Remember Phil & David? (probably Dan & Phil, too, but before my time). Tony and Tom. Now there's David and Pip/Josh.
Adam and Brine came to an arrangement a few years ago. Adam got more autonomy but he had to suffer more risk - he went from guaranteed salary to profit-share.

Cromwell1536 · 15/10/2016 14:13

I remember the profit-share storyline with pleasure - for once, really enjoying Brian's manipulations as he called that whiny, self-centred, entitled drip Adam on his plans! Must admit to a shred of disappointment that Ian hasn't stuck to his guns and departed for fab job, great city and sexual delights anew in Edinburgh.

Cromwell1536 · 15/10/2016 14:18

But, that said, it will further frustrate Knob that the Ian n' Adam ship sails on despite his efforts. So maybe it's worth it. Just hope that, should the moment occur, Ian is suitably astringent with Jenny that her practice of looking the other way is not one that he plans to adopt, and that Adam is in the last-chance saloon....

R4 · 15/10/2016 15:45

Oh yes, deep delight. Ada was cornered into putting his money where his mouth was. Brine was magnificent.

BertrandRussell · 15/10/2016 15:50

LikeDylan- this is completely irrelevant and please ignore if you want to, but to let me see whether I am as clever as I think I am Grin are you Scottish?

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 15/10/2016 20:10

Cor... that's impressive Bertrand what gave me away?*

*Not born in Scotland but l live there and have done for a long time.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/10/2016 21:15

Was it 'took his heart attack'?

Disclaimer: I'm Scottish, albeit an expat for most of my life.

BertrandRussell · 15/10/2016 21:30

I went from England to live in Scotland for the very first time when I was 18- I didn't realize how many usages were different and I still enjoy spotting them over 35 years later! Yes, it was "took a heart attack"! I now have Yorkshire family, and the subtlties amaze me there too. I remember having a row with dp in a clothes shop when he said "Have I to try it on?" Which to him meant "Shall I?" and to me meant "Do I really have to- -do you insist?" So I huffed. And he was baffled. Anyway. Enough of my Henry Higgins-ing. As you were.

JessieMcJessie · 15/10/2016 23:40

Bertrand I have a clear memory of teceievibg a call from my Mum on hols abroad saying "your father has taken no well".

I too enjoy looking out for telltale Scottish subtleties in MN posts Smile.

I may have missed some posts but did nobody give a BOOP for Johnny and his up-front conversation with Tony about how he should not stop himself from buying the tractor due to guilt about John and the Fergie "Dad was stupid, I can see that. I love life too much to do anything stupid Grandad". What a star that boy is.

Oh I noticed the ' took his heart attack' on the way past too. I am Scottish too - and have lived in Scotland for most of my life. I am much more aware of Scottish expressions - and differences between east and west, etc. - since I've been with the most pedantic London expat on the planet. He has an irritating habit of questioning some of the words i use - so much that I've had to remind him sometimes which of us is actually the 'foreigner'.Grin

BTW I don't think of Ian's dad as 'anti-gay'. The only time we heard him, I think, was when eh came over for the civil partnership, and he was found in the Bull not sure what to do/say - it was a lovely scene as Brine and he joined forces and went together to the ceremony. I think of him as just being unsure in a new situation and not wanting to say/do the wrong thing for his son. I imagine he's a Belfast prod so probably won't have much reason to mix with openly gay couples at home. Shock Shame Ian hasn't gone to Edinburgh - a great gay scene there, I am led to believe. i could have given him an intro to my gay cousin!

ErrolTheDragon · 16/10/2016 00:26

Jessie - Johnny is almost too good to be true ... obviously benefitted from being raised in yorkshire by non-archers.Grin

TopazRocks · 16/10/2016 00:27

Funny, my dad used the word 'ashet' but always called a 'press' a cupboard! FC, have you gone and het up the food that's in the ashet?Grin

enochroot · 16/10/2016 01:20

My MIL used 'ashet' meaning a big dish. She told me if you dropped it you said, 'Ah shit'. That led to a discussion of gigot chops and other French influences on Scots food words.

Francis, I spotted your use of 'rough wooing'.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 16/10/2016 01:25

"She told me to put the ashet past in the press"

Ashet is a large serving plate and a press is a cupboard.

"Took his heart attack" however rings no bells for me.

Oh and agree huge BOOP for Johnny talking about his father with his grandfather. That was lovely.
