Hopefully we can go back to an ordinary tale of country folk?

Spoilers are frowned upon.... There's a thread for that.

Sally is off on holiday with nice theatre bloke, so hopefully things will develop. I like it because it's based on the area I grew up in, so it's all very familiar.

Just caught up with the past 2 days on iPlayer and YAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWNNNNNNN.

Pip - ugh
Alice - ugh
Fairbrethren - ugh

Pip's horrible over-acting and sharp intakes of breath AT THE END OF EVERY SENTENCE set my teeth on edge. Alice is morphing into an irritating childish character, devoid of social intellect and where does her voice come from? Could the child of plummy Jennydarling and claret-dripping Brine speak so self-consciously? The most unconvincing 'posh' accent that just sounds like she's trying really, really hard to enunciate. I am not convinced by her fake poshery and even less so by her personality transplant

Pp- in order to be an engineering graduate you clearly have to be working class and from a city. It was probably the back up job after they couldn't find employment in meeja. As they are undoubtedly middle class they can't possibly know anyone from either the countryside or from a different class. Despite living and working near borchester the countryside is a bit of a mystery and most are still uncertain what the point of the machines they work on is. In fact some are still convinced it is a secret military project.

TheAntiBoop · 30/09/2016 14:39

That should say clearly have to be middle class!

Working class are too busy poaching....

ErrolTheDragon · 30/09/2016 14:58

The countryside is the place they had to go to do their DofE expeditions.

Could Rob going around talking to the riffraff be a signal of a bit of a breakdown? He's previously been used to having some status within the community, after the stabbing he was generally an object of sympathy, and people like Helen's family had to button their lips round him because of the trial coming up. Suddenly most of that has fallen away, Helen's family have most of the power when it comes to His Son, and he has been pilloried in the press. So he feels he has to justify himself to all and sundry and make them understand how deeply wronged he has been, even people he formerly despised like Jazzer and Emma.

BertrandRussell · 30/09/2016 16:31

"Could Rob going around talking to the riffraff be a signal of a bit of a breakdown?"

I wondered that. And the "I can buy a much better house than this" Delusional?

BertrandRussell · 30/09/2016 16:37

And he is getting very mixed messages- all the men except for Helen'/ family being all "oh, well, he hasn't actually been charged with anything- you never know what goes on behind closed doors-I always thought he was a perfectly decent chap-went to Uppingham, you know"

ErrolTheDragon · 30/09/2016 16:55

I'd be interested to see Rob trying to interact with some of the other men - Robert Snell, Alistair, Oliver (does he know about the sab?). Pity the cricket season is over in a way, and I'm not sure if he's got the brass neck to stroll into the pub.

LadyConstanceDeCoverlet · 30/09/2016 17:05

Rob really has no hope of buying that house unless Bruce coughs up, which doesn't sound too likely if he wasn't prepared to do so previously. He must have spent all of Peggy's £10K and have zero savings, and something tells me Justin isn't going to be paying him enough for any sort of deposit on the mansion he would no doubt like to buy to prove his status.

I don't think Oliver does know about the sab. Didn't he say something to Caroline quite recently which showed that he thought the way Rob dealt with the sab was all quite splendid? I seem to remember Caroline spluttering a bit.

BertrandRussell · 30/09/2016 17:06

They'd all be the same. "Helen was always difficult- there's two sides to every story........."

R4 · 30/09/2016 18:19

birdsdestiny re 'what was Alice like before?' I think it says everything that Brine and JD sent her to a naice gels school but, as soon as she could, she rebelled and went to a State sixth form (?the one that Frilly are afraid will give them nits, or worse?). She escaped Ambridge to do Engineering at a proper University. She and Chris were rebellious enough to elope.
But then the SW dragged her back to do her Masters at ... you've guessed it ... Felpersham. She has had her fun but is now being absorbed back into the borg.

TheAntiBoop · 30/09/2016 18:22

No one in the village has any loyalty to rob so I would imagine everyone would be quite awkward around him. i can't imagine Adam would button his lip, or Ian.

buckingfrolicks · 30/09/2016 18:28

I fear that "everyone" will feel excruciatingly embarrassed around rob and guilty that they had fallen for his winning ways. I think we'll see a lot of avoidance that segues into a degree of normal relations particularly from the men.

Let bygones be bygones, eh? She's back with the children so no more to be said about it.

Bah.

Gherkinsmummy · 30/09/2016 19:12

The unravelling of Robsworld at last!

Northernlurker · 30/09/2016 19:13

Rob talking to Emma was horrible. Thank goodness she stood firm.

Gherkinsmummy · 30/09/2016 19:13

Go Emma!

Northernlurker · 30/09/2016 19:13

Run away Emma, run away!

Northernlurker · 30/09/2016 19:14

Ooh is there going to be a fight

Northernlurker · 30/09/2016 19:15

Go jazzer!

HumphreyCobblers · 30/09/2016 19:15

Emma was great!

Mootsie · 30/09/2016 19:15

WOW! Emma.
