New thread in time for Friday's episode...

OP posts:

Come on, we all know the £500k is going to be spent on a robotic milking parlour.

What they should actually do is buy the Grundys' house from Hazel. And buy the village shop while they're at it.

bigbuttons · 08/11/2015 15:36

A fascinating thing happened to me this afternoon; exdp was on the phone. Unfortunately he is Rob, almost to a T. I see this more and more as I listen with horror to the ramping up of control and abuse in TA. Today ex was up to his usual manipulative shit and suddenly I heard Rob speaking and realised what ex was up to!! I calmly stood my ground. If Helen can't do it (yet) I can do it for her!

It was a really bizarre experience though!

Gruach · 08/11/2015 15:42

Impressive buttons.Flowers

Not wishing to be heartless; can you tell us what's going to happen next? (With Rob ...)

bigbuttons · 08/11/2015 16:01

Well, from experience as long as Helen is submissive he will be ok. The degree of accuracy regarding this type of abuser is astonishing. Their need for power and to be absolutely right and in control is all consuming for them. It's a bit like watching my life being played out in front of me!!

The thing is Helen will become less and less able to trust her own judgement. The only thing that will get rid of him will be death or prison and he won't go down without a fight. Mine is neither dead nor in prison sadly although I have prayed hard many a time Wink. He had my parents hood inked for years and years too.

PerspicaciaTick · 08/11/2015 16:07

The £500K will be spent buying Pip's share of the joint cattle thingy with Adam. Which I don't really understand and find too boring to care about.
Plus I feel they are being unfair on Linda not telling her about Scruff. She would want to know...she's never been afraid of the truth.

toldmywrath · 08/11/2015 16:33

I wonder how roboPip's brothers (who? I hear you ask Grin ) will take the news that grannyheather's money is going to the only farmer in the village Peep. Sorry boys.

LillianGish · 08/11/2015 17:35

Agree Perspicacia. Why aren't they telling Lynda about Scruff? Surely she would want to know - isn't not knowing worse?

enochroot · 08/11/2015 18:11

Of course Ruth's going to spend it on Pip's latest whim.
I'm suggesting other ways to invest it, more in hope rather than in expectation.

Minimammoth · 08/11/2015 19:05

Couldn't the boys do with a bit put aside for future uni fees?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/11/2015 19:17

I wouldn't pay Josh's university fees upfront. I'm not convinced he's got what it takes to see a degree course out to the end.

Poor old Joe. Sad

EBearhug · 08/11/2015 19:53

We hear so little from Josh and Ben that I have very little idea of their academic abilities.

BYOSnowman · 08/11/2015 20:00

Given how devastated Ben has been over his granny death (so devastated he appears to spend all his time alone in his room) I think he deserves a big share

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/11/2015 20:18

Nobody who was taking their A levels seriously would just nod and say 'Yeah, fine' if told their family was planning to move 200 miles away halfway through sixth form. Mind you, no teenager I've ever met would have said that at any stage of their life, which makes me wonder if aliens took Josh and Ben some time ago and left clones behind.

GruntledOne · 08/11/2015 21:09

I can see why they're not telling Lynda. It's just a bit delicate telling someone that their dog has become part of the cattle feed, and contaminated it at that.

Imbroglio · 08/11/2015 21:41

The £500,000 will buy a share in The Bull and Pip's store cattle.

Gruach · 08/11/2015 21:53

Just remembered Tobes said Josh was interested in some merger of their feathery businesses ...

That might need dosh.

FinestGrundyTurkey · 08/11/2015 21:56

Kenton will be spitting feathers when he finds out.
Has Jolene got a mother?

(Does anybody else find it odd that a woman of HP's age with no dependants would have life insurance? My dad was insured to the max when younger, over-insured if anything, but he was over 80 when he died & he didn't have any then - the premiums for older people, esp for an amount like £200k, are ridiculous!)

BYOSnowman · 08/11/2015 22:08

That's what I thought too FGT. Maybe we will get a misspelling sl!!

Imbroglio · 08/11/2015 22:10

I think the money should go to insuring Jill's life. For squillions.

32ndfloorandabitdizzy · 08/11/2015 22:35

Oliver isn't on holiday it seems- he is moonlighting as a bishop in Downton

CuttedUpPear · 08/11/2015 22:47

DadDadDad · 08/11/2015 23:31

Depends what kind of life insurance we are talking about. Wouldn't expect a retired widow with no dependants to have term assurance (pays out a sum only if you die) as premiums would be too high (as mentioned above). But she could have whole of life, which is more like a savings product, paying out the accumulated premiums when you die. I believe there is some tax advantage to doing it this way.

(And I thought it was only DairyFarmersWife who got to contribute her professional knowledge on this thread. Never thought being an actuary would have its uses here).

SmallLegsOrSmallEggs · 09/11/2015 01:30

It's not the first time dadx3. We'd be lost without you.

Gruach · 09/11/2015 06:25

Is that your professional opinion SmallLegs?

LillianGish · 09/11/2015 07:40

HP's life insurance is yet another case of plot-based story development. A way of ensuring the Dopey's have plenty of cash for whichever way SOC decides to take the plot - buy Pip's cattle, bail out Kenton, build a robotic milking parlour ... They would have realistically got a small inheritance from HP anyway with the sale of her house and with Ruth as the sole inheritor I'm not sure why the need for the somewhat unbelievable life insurance line unless SOC has big plans for the cash. (Thanks again DDD for your actuarial insight!)
