The midday current affairs slot on Radio 2 just isn't the same without Jimmy Young. I know it's twelve years since JV took over but I can't warm to him at all. He constantly interrupts his guests, has a generally abrasive manner and has difficulty coping when two or more guests have a difference of opinion. I wish the phone-in element would be scrapped as well; another aspect JV can't seem to control. When two listeners start squabbling on the telephone over national radio it makes me want to switch the radio off.

Jimmy Young, on the other hand, was my broadcasting hero. I grew up listening to his programme. I concede his playlist was rather limited and parts of his patter were scripted. But he was a reassuring presence on the radio, a first class interviewer and had a great rapport with Bill Thomas, Tony DeAngeli etc. I still miss the JY prog Sad .

Has it really been 12 years??? Shock I've given up listening. The production is shocking and the callers are (more often than not) thick as shit far too tedious.

pookamoo · 26/01/2015 21:03

It's the audio equivalent of the Daily Fail and without fail I end up shouting at the radio!

DevonFolk · 26/01/2015 21:04

I often make the same comparison pookamoo

vienna1981 · 26/01/2015 23:31

Agreed. Making the programme a phone-in was a retrograde step but the standard of callers is questionable, to say the least.
I've heard it said that Jeremy Vine displays a left wing bias. I can't say because I don't know enough about politics but that view would be in contrast to the programme's alleged Daily Mail qualities.

Furthermore, all that allotment shit and "what it means to be human" that went on for months. Who cares ? That sort of subject has no place on current affairs broadcasting. It's like the programme was trying to simultaneously dumb down and be a smart arse. Jimmy Young wouldn't have put up with that kind of carry-on Angry .

I hate the phone in bit too. If there is a subject worth discussing then I'd like to hear the views of people who have some expertise to contribute not just some random idiot who has learned how to push buttons on a phone. The views of the man in the street mean nothing to most of us

I miss Jimmy Young and Terry Wogan. Oh for those glory days!

vienna1981 · 01/02/2015 19:58

Can we have Jimmy Young back please ? Or even John Inverdale or Vanessa Feltz ? Anyone but the present incumbent. I now listen to Radio 4 more than 2 because of JV. And while we're at it let's dispense with Ken Bruce's services as well. Fed up with his facetious codswallop.

Can't stand Jeremy Vine. It would be a lot better if his brother did the show.

On the other hand my listening is pretty much exclusively Radio4 so I'm not too concerned about JV.

vienna1981 · 10/02/2015 18:06

Jeremy Vine was interviewing Ed Milliband yesterday. I couldn't bear to listen so I switched off. Did anyone hear the interview ?

OP posts:
mrsmootoo · 13/02/2015 09:00

I just listened to the interview. Not sure who you're annoyed with! I thought Ed Milliband was dreadful, but I usually think he comes over very badly, regardless of what policies he's talking about and whether I agree with them. Generally I like Jeremy - he can't help what the callers say, and they always start off any piece with an 'expert' opinion.

vienna1981 · 13/02/2015 11:46

mrsmootoo. I didn't hear any of the interview. I can't bear Ed Milliband any more than Jeremy Vine but given the BBC 's leftish leanings I might have expected a rather biased interview. I hope I'm wrong because I advocate impartiality.

mrsmootoo · 13/02/2015 12:50

Jeremy was putting the other side of course, so didn't come over too Leftie. Ed was doing enough of that!

BaconAndAvocado · 27/02/2015 22:45

Jeremy Vile...........

There are only 3 reasons to listen to Radio 2 - Elaine Paige, Liza Tarbuck and Dermott O'Leary (soooo much better than when he's on the telly box )

vienna1981 · 14/03/2015 19:19

Ray Moore, Jimmy Young, Terry Wogan, Pete Murray, John Dunn. That WAS Radio 2 back in the day. Oh, and diddy David Hamilton.

I cannot stand Liza Tarbuck or Elain Page on the radio! No, give me Paul O'Grady and Simon Mayo any day. I usually listen to 6 music in the daytime. Still love Mark Radcliffe after all these years.

Jeremy Vine doesn't offend me. We are the same age with the same taste in music. Steve Wright on the other hand......

Cecyhall · 14/03/2015 19:36

DH puts Jeremy Vine on on purpose to get me shouting at the radio. And even though I know what he's doing I just can't help it!

Timetoask · 14/03/2015 20:19

Really???? I love Jeremy Vine. He is always very neutral about his opinions, intelligent, love his program. Best thing on the radio

vienna1981 · 14/03/2015 20:24

Timetoask. Maybe I was used to Jimmy Young's more avuncular style. Jeremy Vine is too much of a 'down-with-the -kids' bruiser for my liking.

He is awful, panders to the lowest common denominator, so convinced of his own self importance it makes me feel queasy to listen to him

Especially his faux, soft isn't this just so awful, look how fabulously empathetic I am being voice when he is trying to pull a story out of some poor tragic soul.

He cuts short anyone with a valid point, does not control the guests so they just end up shouting over one another, and you can just see the smug-o-meter rising up when he has an acolyte on the phone praising the show.

I'd sooner anyone else in the world do that programme, and they'd do a better job.

Did anyone else here the joke from Ken Bruce when there was talk of some sort of Radio 2 theme park?? I cannot remember exactly how it went, but the gist was that there would be a Jeremy Vine Tower, you would be able to get in, wander about, you'd end up right at the top, with NO idea how you got there.
....made me laugh for ages.

CaTsMaMmA · 14/03/2015 20:35

oh god....HEAR, not here.

not that JV would know the difference.

CiderwithBuda · 14/03/2015 20:37

I hate the way he cuts people off mid sentence. Even if they are discussing something very personal. He is completely useless at empathy. Vanessa Feltz is so much better.

Can't stand Liza Tarbuck. Find paul o'grady and Elaine paige annoying. I like Dermot but not on radio - mumbles too much.

Mintyy · 14/03/2015 20:39

I switch from Radio 2 to Radio 4 when Jeremy Vine comes on.

vienna1981 · 14/03/2015 20:44

The trouble with Jeremy Vine is his inability to time his interruptions. He needs to butt in to stop his studio guests or phone-in bods squabbling but should absolutely butt OUT when somebody is eloquently and patiently making a valid point.

OP posts:
vienna1981 · 16/03/2015 20:46

BTW I have now completely stopped listening to Jeremy Vine. I might tune in again when we get closer to the General Election but I can't promise owt. No doubt he'll be all over BBC News by then. He should leave it to James Landell and Norman Smith. Nick Robinson should be back by then too
