Peggy might not be on warfarin. She might be on aspirin though (less brutal than warfarin). Depends what caused the first stroke - for some strokes blood-thinners are dangerous. But strokes in older people are more likely to be due to clots, so mibbe. Do you think the SW have actually researched this?! When I mentioned the poss of a blood clot after yesterday's episode, I'd forgotten the previous stroke which the Ambridge Stroke Fairy cured.

Is there much real rivalry between actuaries and accountants, or is it just banter?

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 10/11/2014 22:54

Lil'G! I came on to say that the only actuary I have known personally (and not well) was the creator of the Tompkins Table. Not at my college but the best friend of a good friend of mine. Post graduation they once rescued me when I phoned from an airport with nowhere to lay my head.

I don't remember any actuaries from my professional life. I imagine they would have communicated mostly with my clerk.... (I am joking.)

BiscuitMillionaire · 10/11/2014 22:57

Zero: In other news ... How is it that MNHQ can conjour up Russell Brand (the day after tomorrow) but the Guardian of the Ambridge Revolution is still nowhere to be seen?
Russell's got a book to sell, of course. Mr O'Connor wouldn't want to be set upon by piranhas for no good reason.

ZeroSomeGameThingy · 10/11/2014 23:02

Yeah - I guess there was a certain element of mutual benefit. (Am I allowed to say that?)

BTW - Peggy had her first, rather minor, stroke while my DM was in hospital recovering from a rather less minor one. I would be perfectly happy if they chose something else to bludgeon her with.

DadDadDad · 10/11/2014 23:10

Peggy had a stroke?! oh well she'll be dead by Thursday we might wish to reconsider my earlier analysis, but she's still got a good chance of living a few more years.

You have to remember that most accountants don't even know what actuaries do: the former are glorified bookkeepers generalists working in every industry, the latter are specialists working in insurance. In my world, everyone likes to mock actuaries, because we are the slightly geeky ones who love our spreadshits, but we take it because there is a (grudging) acceptance that we do something no-one else can do, and the best of us make insurance work better both for the companies and the customers.

DadDadDad · 10/11/2014 23:13

Hang on, isn't this a thread for discussing an everyday tale of country folk? I'll see if I can find an actuary from NFU Mutual and get him in on the discussion.Smile

BringYourOwnSnowman · 10/11/2014 23:18

You need to start a breakout session 'agriculture and actuaries - next to each other in the dictionary or a match made in heaven?'

I am going to ignore your comments on accountants

LillianGish · 10/11/2014 23:22

DDD I challenge you to find another actuary who wants to join in our discussions.

TheFantasticMrsFox · 10/11/2014 23:43

As an aside, I was at a wedding reception (in a professional capacity rather than as a guest) where the family were laughing at Grandad falling asleep.
Much jollity ensued with photos being taken, ladies hats placed on his head, piles of empty bottles placed in his lap and so forth. When I mentioned that he looked a bit grey I was shouted down while various other disguises were applied to the poor fellow. It was all quite amusing until the ambulance arrived and the paramedics revived him on the floor of the reception Shock

A while ago I would have said that was too sensationalist a story for TA but now, who knows? Confused

GypsyFloss · 11/11/2014 06:28

So when is Peggy's scheduled demise party?

Hakluyt · 11/11/2014 06:34

How old is Johhny, by the way? I would have thought his tutor would come up with an entire filing cabinet full of safeguarding issues in that one visit alone............

BringYourOwnSnowman · 11/11/2014 09:00

He's just done gcses so must be 16

PetulaGordino · 11/11/2014 09:19

Guineapiglet I am a norfolk girl too (there's an accent few tv/radio folk get right)

I can tell te difference between different scottish accents, but i wouldn't necessarily be able to tell you where those people were from beyond the obvious (Edinburgh and Glasgow) and where I recognise the accent as being the same as that of people I know (Aberdeenshire mostly)

PetulaGordino · 11/11/2014 09:21

It was nice to have a cheerful bridge farm based episode, but I don't know why we had to have a breakdown of the farm and its employees, that's the sort of thing you're supposed to infer after years of dedicated listening and asking questions on here isn't it?

LillianGish · 11/11/2014 09:36

Totally agree Petula. We'll be having "Previously in The Archers" before long with only a few minutes left to actually update the storyline.

trevortrevorslattery · 11/11/2014 10:15

their maths is not good enough to pass actuarial exams

I can confirm the truth of this statement. Definitely not good enough.

I listened to Desert Island Discs with June Spencer on the way to work this morning. It was lovely, so thanks again for the link.

trevortrevorslattery · 11/11/2014 10:22

basketz I reckon I can tell Edinburgh and Glasgow accents but that's all.

Accountants and actuaries are deadly enemies not really Smile. Actuaries are held in awe IME as they do some crazy calculations about the value of pension funds that no-one can understand.

MrsFox Shock

unitarian · 11/11/2014 10:46

I think Helen and Pat mentioned 13th as the day of Peggy's hair appointment and that's the date DDD predicted for thread-end. At the rate this thread is moving he's probably right.

Also Jess MUST be due by now!

PetulaGordino · 11/11/2014 10:58

yes she absolutely must

love the way tony legged it when jennifer came to talk about the party. wasn't it him who suggested they have it at bridge farm Hmm

In defence of Actuaries, I used to work at an Actuarial firm. They were a (mostly) lovely bunch of fun loving people, and not at all boring.

Maybe someone in the Archers could become an Actuary...

Actually, thinking about it, no one does have a professional job (bar Usha). I would quite like to have some people with normal jobs (commuting) who are out all day everyday and only around late evening and weekends and who can't turn up at a meeting mid-day on Wednesday without any notice or attend a party in the middle of a Thursday afternoon.

JessieMcJessie · 11/11/2014 11:12

quillpen you forgot super duper aeronautical engineer Alice! Who conveniently gets a lot of time off in lieu and has a boss who doesn't mind her talking single days' holiday every few weeks to host tea parties.

LillianGish · 11/11/2014 11:13

Please can we have actuaries in the next thread title.

unitarian · 11/11/2014 11:15

Good point, QuillPen. Every village has commuters.

I wonder if Peggy's wobbliness this week is a blind. We expect something to happen to her but maybe it's all going to happen around her, either at the hairdresser's or at the party - or both.
Jess having a quick trim before the birth of Legititch? Thus reminding Peggy that ROB IS MARRIED.

I'm intrigued too about Jim being at the party. He was at the receiving end of Rob in full-on bullying mode when they toured the digester. I can't quite believe Jim has forgiven or forgotten. (This is assuming Rob too has time off for the party.)
