I'm trying to make a cryptic crossword for a friend, with his interests as the answers.

I've only ever done one cryptic crossword...

If I put some of my clues below, could you tell me if they work, or how to improve them?

  1. She catches region in her web. 11 letters. Answer Netherlands.

  2. Animal cast about. 4 letters. Answer cats

  3. Initially grown really emerging everywhere naturally. 5 letters. Answer Green (party)

  4. Short allied forces make an unfortunate duke. 5 letters. Answer Franz.

  5. Transformation of some is a moroh. 13 letters. Answer metamorphosis.

  6. Not for resting, not working. 6 letters. Answer forest.

  7. Firstly, short talk and strong coffee. 5 letters. Answer chess.

And

Mangled jury within a tired lathe. 3 and 5 letters. Answer The Trial.

I'm not an expert - just starting to do cryptics myself. I did (eventually) work out how 1 was parsed, got 2 and 3 no problems.

I can't parse 4 (although I get the Franz/Duke reference).

5 looks like an anagram but "some is a moroh" isn't an anagram of metamorphosis so not sure how to do that one.

6 looks like a run on, but that would give forrest and I'm not sure which part is the definition

7 couldn't parse

Mangled jury... couldn't parse

That's not to say there's anything wrong with these... just that I don't know how they work.

I think 1. Would only work in net was on the outside of the other aspects of the clue . From the way its structured you'd expect the region to be inside of the net not to be the main part of rhe clue. Could work but needs restructure. 2. Is your classic anagram, works fine

GailTheSnail · 20/06/2026 13:17

Then again if it's for your friend and summises his interests I'm sure he'll get them!

JoyousWriter · 20/06/2026 13:26

7 was short talk - chat (ch), strong coffee - espresso (es). Because we play chess at a coffee morning.

Mangled jury within a tired lathe.

Mangled meant anagram. Jury was the clue. The Trial is made up of the letters of tired lathe.

Sorry to be picky - what a lovely thing to do, but...

Where are you getting the second "s" in chess from?.

Also, clue 5. "moroh" isn't an actual word which is a bit distracting. Where is the "p"

Edited as I had misread clue 5.

JoyousWriter · 20/06/2026 14:30

Moroh was a typo and should be morph.

Be as picky as you like. I've no idea what I'm doing!

There is no "t" there either.

JoyousWriter · 20/06/2026 15:13

Moor steamship would be another anagram for metamorphosis

What about a run-on for the chess one like 'the centre or pea(ch ess)ence'?

GailTheSnail · 20/06/2026 17:25

Or a homonym signifier for clue 1, " we hear Peter Pan might be from places like these"

Both these two need work too though, its not easy

Of not or

JoyousWriter · 20/06/2026 17:29

I like the Peter Pan clue.

I needed a clue for "Wyre" and came up with "sounds almost ductile".

My clue for "Buxton" isn't really cryptic st all.

Fruity headwear, not in Hay on Wye.

Badminton. Sport, but not putting horses on the stand.

Doesn’t ‘jury’ need to be at the beginning or end then?

So i think to make it actually cryptic you cant say 'sounds like' and use a homonym signifier like these... https://cryptics.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_homophone_indicators

A colourful do = green party?
