p&t shopping basket

Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this problem or at least make it better?
how to i mend the basket before it is toolate (tape does not work.. will iron-on patches do?)
and how do i make the shopping basket a bit higher?

the fact that the shopping basket is too low and get damaged by rubbing on the (uneven) pavement

Ah, less weight in it, we got a new basket and only put jackets in it, we got the panniers for nappy bag etc.
