Which stroller for a 21kg three year old?

I'm on the lookout for a stroller-type pushchair that has the capacity to carry DS2, who weighs in at 21kg.

Most strollers have a 15kg limit!

He's walking most of the time, but I need something to contain his strops for him to sit in when we are out shopping

Any recommendations?

you probably need to look at special needs strollers or a 3 wheeler like a mountain buggy

Unless he has SN I would be getting a pair of reins and making him walk! Confining him to a stroller when he is in a strop isn't going to do anything to change his behaviour.

If he does have SN then you would be better off posting in the SN section where I'm sure you will get lots of advice and support.

you need to go for special needs strollers like the Maclaren Major Elite as all standard strollers and pushchairs are only weight tested up to 15 kg for most, occasionally up to 18 kg.

Is he a very tall child as well as heavy? If so, standard strollers are going to be too short in the back for him to be comfortable and any hoods may be touching his head.

I personally would not get a pushchair for a three year old but that is not what you asked, you asked for what to buy.

A MB will do the job fantastically though they are big buggies and not cheap, my dd is 3.3 and very tall and she has bags of room in an urban. Her black mac xt she obs looks huge in it but I can still push her in it one handed (it is her brother's buggy now but whilst pregnant I would use it to carry shopping etc and got her into walking ready for her brother's arrival in jan). You can pick up xt's on ebay quite cheaply.

Silver cross dazzle has a higher weight limit than most, they are a bit tippy for babies but with a toddler it should weigh it down well!!

I think the drive everywhere mum's or those who use public transport, or those without older siblings who don't have to go out if their 3y old is tired or under the weather forget what it's like for other mum's \ kids!
It may be this 3y old has joint hypermobility. Not a special need as such but certainly makes muscles work harder. 3 times harder infact. So said child will get tired and have Strops! I know op did not say this but it's important to recognise this mother will know her childs needs!

Anyway. To answer the q. A babydan stockholm has a 23kg limit and i think a quinny zapp has a 20kg limit. I used both with my dd who was about 25kg at 3 or 4 (huge not fat i hasten to add, with austrian strong men in her ancestory!).
Zapp was easy to push. Also think a Bj city elite or city mini would be fine as would the Micralite fast fold or superlite. I can get my big 6y old in the Micralite fastfold. Seat is funny shape to look at but she fits fine and says the hammock seat is really comfy.

Bj's and Micralite are very strong. It's important to understand that most buggies are only tested to 15kg. Many can take much higher weight. Just be aware of tipping if extra large child is thrashing about. Keep a hold of the handles. Seriously don't think you'd need a sn buggy.
Ps had to phone Britax ref dd's weight height regarding car seat, as she's 38kg but to short to not have one (by a couple of cm) they said it is tested and fine for heavier kids but the law won't allow them to print that on it!

We used maclaren (XT, I think) until DS about 4, on hols usually for long walks, and managed v well. On hols last year DS nearly 5 we didn't take it with us as didn't use anymore and obv bit old for stroller. DP ended up carrying DS lots, as gives in v easily to moaning, so we bought cheap stroller, really rubbish and v hard to push. Would def recommend maclaren, it may give a max weight limit of 15/18 kgs but they are very sturdy and ours was certainly well us

You are so right. Even without any condition, DD4 is 3 1/2 she does walk with her siblings to school in the morning and then back home. Then she walks to nursery (1.2 miles each way). I get other mums telling me "Is she not a bit old for a pushchair?" when I sometimes, seldomly take it to pick her up at home time. The same people that usually walk all the way to the school's car park, sit their children in the car and drive back home. So irritating!

Less of a problem for us though because DD is a tiny little thing and still ok on stroller.

I googled "stroller for child over 20kg" and got that, might be a bit pricey though.

my DD is almost 4 and still has a pushchair. I have no intention of making her walk, she will do that when she is good and ready, just like she eventually gave up dragging the teddy everywhere. She is not lazy, far from it, but she does tire quickly, and we often forget that a mile or so may not seem like a lot for us, but to a 3yo who is less than half our size, it may seem like 3 or more miles. I too get very tired of the comments from other parents, really its no-one elses business, and we all know our own children best.
For OP, the mamas and papas 03 sport pushchairs are seriously sturdy, I should think they would be capable and large enough to take a 23kg toddler. The other alternative is the maclaren major buggy or something similar.

he will be fine in a maclaren - look at an xlr, the biggest one they make, or a baby jogger. As someone has already pointed out, they will hold a heavier child - the companies just won't gurantee it to a higher weight.

Maclarens are well made so will be easy to push as a stroller

My 3 yr old DD weighs similar and on the rare occasions when we use a buggy our basic maclaren XT is still fine. It's sometimes difficult to negotiate a corner or curb with a lot of weight it, but its fine for normal use.

A maclaren will be fine. I've perched my bum in ours while waiting for ds to finish in the sandpit and its held my weight ok!

DS is 3.5 and we have a 3 wheeler and a p&t. We walk alot.
