my little sister uses a silver cross buggy and pram frm the 80s and still works well

zen1 · 23/01/2010 20:35

I have two of the old striped Maclarens from the 70s and a mothercare pushchair with beads from 1981. I have used them for my babies, but always with safety reins as the harnesses don't come up to today's safety standards.

thisisyesterday · 23/01/2010 20:37

oh wow zen, don't suppose you want to sell one of the maclarenss do you??

PrettyCandles · 23/01/2010 20:46

My parents kept an early striped Maclaren from the 70s, and we often used it for our dc when we stayed there. Used reins as well, as the harness is fairly useless. Seemed perfectly adequate, but I far prefer our modern ones. Very low handlebars and no swivel wheels, plus the brake is very inconvenient to use. Dc were comfortable, as long as they didn't want to sleep (no recline), but they outgrew it by age 2ish.

AFAIK it's going back up into the loft for the dgc! They don't make 'em like they used to.

zen1 · 23/01/2010 20:49

I'm afraid I am a buggyaholic, with a partiular afinity for Maclarens and 70s stuff. I couldn't part with them. Still on the look out for a green and white stripe one though!

zen1 · 23/01/2010 20:51

Yes, the handles are low, but I love the fact they are so light! Much, much lighter than a volo. You can confortably hold a folded one with your thumb and forfinger.

PrettyCandles · 23/01/2010 20:57

That's the one we've got, zen, and no, you're not having it.

The low handles aren't a problem when you're 5'4" (my mum), but they are when you're 6'3" (my dh).

thisisyesterday · 23/01/2010 21:00

darn!
my mum used to have one, and a double

dunno what happened to them though

zen1 · 23/01/2010 21:07

PrettyCandles!. I've got 2 red and white striped ones, a blue and white stripe and a brown and white stripe. We used to have a green and white in the 70s but it got knicked from our garage. Someone must have anticipated how rare they'd become!!

jane2004 · 23/01/2010 21:10

Hi Jane
The mothercare one I've got is brown corduroy with brown interior. I think I know which one you're talking about though - is it blue with a red interior? If I recall, it doesn't have any safety harness, so I would use it with pram reins attached to the d-rings.

The maclaren ones have a sort of lever that folds under one of the back wheels to stop the pram from moving. Maclaren did make special needs ones in the 70s but they were larger and more sturdy than the regular model.

jane2004 · 24/01/2010 11:17

Yes, I kind of collect old pushchairs (and modern ones too), but DP is getting wound up about the lack of space in our house due to my "hobby"! I just like 70s stuff (particularly mothercare stuff) in general.

My mothercare one is brown corduroy on the outside and the interior is brown stylene (wipeable vinyl type stuff). I was a deluxe model at the time, but I get lots of sniggers if I use it now. I guess other people don't appreciate my tastes .

zen1 · 24/01/2010 16:48

I mean it was a deluxe model at the time. (I was a child at the time)!

jane2004 · 24/01/2010 22:43
