Do I need a double pram for 2Y 4M age gap?

I’m having a baby November 2026 and my son will be 2 years and 4 months. Anyone that has a similar age gap did you get a double pram and if so any recommendations? Also, any experiences not getting one and doing buggy board xx

Have a runner, a buggy board is no good! Needed double buggy with a similar age gap

I had a smaller age gap (18 months) but we used the pram a lot for long walks, days out etc well beyond 3. I have a bad back so using a sling for the youngest was never an option for me. I had a mountain buggy duet and absolutely loved it, it's a heavy thing and you need a big boot for it, but it's a side by side double that fits through normal width doors. I gave it to my sister after I had it, she has a 20 month age gap and used it loads.

With 4 under five I never felt the need to use prams with our 15month olds when our last twins were born, always encouraged walking and now there cracking little hikers lol

We had this gap. Friend lent us a double buggy and I didn’t use it once. Buggy board, sling, and no issues. Never used the car, always public transport

Same here. My baby hated the pram and lived in the sling until she was about 1, so DC1 stayed in pram until that point and then swapped to buggyboard.

I think that's what's I had, @rockstuckhardplace! Or possibly the Explorer.

It was very similar to this: https://ebay.us/m/sjYF2O

I liked that it wasn't side-by-side, could be used as a single, and it had various configurations. There was a sort of soft carrycot that slotted into the bottom I think. The baby sort of slotted into that and someone in a shop once thought he was a doll 😁

Yes @HellenicOfTroy! I loved the "bag." So handy for bringing the baby inside when asleep - light and enabling them to lie flat. Everyone used to have those travel systems which was basically a carrier for a car seat, and the babies used to be in car seats all the time...

I got the Phil and Ted's straight off with my first and only ever had the one pushchair.

Useful for days when it is raining or racing to the doctor when the toddler is sick or just generally when you need to get somewhere fast and don’t need the toddler stopping to look at every ant and flower along the way.

I have a 2yr 2 month age gap and have a double pram, and a single pram with a buggy board. We live rurally so I do a lot of rod walking with the dogs and the double pram, and I’ve found the double handy for days out

Mcdhotchoc · 02/04/2026 13:08

I would also factor in that even good walkers become less so if a baby is in their pushchair.
I could not have done without a double buggy. 2 and a half years between mine. I did get a second hand one though

Nomedshere · 02/04/2026 13:17

I didn't.

Mine were a smaller age gap but I used the double buggy a lot. Both kids were car nappers so it was handy when I’d gone out and they were both fast asleep. DD used it til she was about 3.5 on and off.
i had a city mini jogger and a Phil & Ted, both second hand.

exhaustedandoverit · 02/04/2026 13:33

Also to add, I did get a buggy board but I was either hurting my ankles by kicking it or DD was jumping off it with no warning so it wasn’t used much. I hated it.

Fridgetapas · 02/04/2026 13:36

I had this exact gap and just got a buggy board for my oldest and it worked fine but he has always been a really good walker.

I had a single buggy and a single travel buggy so when me and husband did days out sometimes we’d bring both if we thought oldest might need a rest.

HoppingPavlova · 02/04/2026 13:41

We had several and just used buggy board, never needed a double. Sometimes we had older ones take turns using buggy board, but it worked.

Peonies12 · 02/04/2026 13:45

I’d wait till nearer the time so you can see how your child is doing with walking. Yo could use a sling for new baby at first as well.

Clearinguptheclutter · 02/04/2026 13:49

Mine were 21 months apart and never had one.Had a buggy board, when ds2 was tiny I carried him in a sling

dh spent two years walking to nursery 1.5 miles away with ds2 in buggy and ds1 on his back!!

we did however have two buggies so occasionally on bigger family expeditions used both

if you get one I’d recommend the second hand market which is plentiful as you might not need it for long, if at all.

Almost 3 year gap and I use my double out n about nipper all the time. Great pram and so helpful as my older boy would walk for a bit then complain and ask to be carried. The double gave me so much more freedom to walk for longer distances. Also meant if newborn was asleep in pram I could play with older boy at park or at playgroup and leave baby to sleep (as opposed to having baby in carrier restricting me).

I had this gap between my first two and just got a buggy board. It was fine for day to day but we actually do a lot of day trips - muséums, beaches, national trust etc. And it became really annoying for impromptu naps. My 2-3 i had the same age gap and got a double for this reason

GothicCola · 02/04/2026 15:30

There is 2 years and 5 months between mine and we didn't get a double buggy. But my eldest walked at 9 months and point blank refused to go in the buggy after about 18 months. We got a buggy board and in 14 months I've used it once. I don't know if I got a bad one or if I'm just particularly uncoordinated, but I found it spectacularly difficult to navigate the buggy + buggy board and toddler. The only time a double buggy came in useful was at a day out at the zoo. And then we just hired one on the day. My kids are 3 and 1 now and there hasn't been one single occasion where I have wished we had a double buggy.

Nosejobnelly · 02/04/2026 15:34

My DS was out of his buggy before 3, but not much before. I have a 21 month gap and used a double buggy for a bit, then a buggy board which was very useful.
I know kids who were still in the buggy in Reception (no additional needs, I knew them well).

NewYearNewJob2024 · 02/04/2026 20:02

We have a 25 month gap and have needed a double! It was also a lifesaver on holiday - at the airport, waiting around etc.
It all very much depends on your child though. We bought ours on Facebook Marketplace when baby was a few weeks old, so don’t worry about getting one just yet. We’ve got the Joie one which has been great and we’ve had a lot of use out of it!
