Which strap holes on a footmuff create more space?

I bought a footmuff for a pushchair with a three-point harness. It has three sets of strap holes around the shoulder and two in the crotch. The footmuff/pram combo isn't ideal because I can't attach the footmuff to anything so it slides about while I'm putting DS in. But the issue I'm having is that I don't know which strap holes to use and how they affect the fit. Do the top strap holes create the most space for DS? And what about the crotch ones? It's already a struggle to get the straps to meet and he's 14mo and only going to get bigger! Any tips on what strap holes do what would be greatly appreciated.

In case it's helpful to know the brands, I have a John Lewis sheepskin footmuff and a Nuna TRIV pushchair.

Can you not extend the straps?

Yes I can loosen them a bit but at the moment once he's in the pushchair, the straps are fine. I was just hoping to find the right strap holes to make the strapping in process easier. We've experimented with a few combinations but can't work out what difference they make!
