Give me one for reason why I shouldn't buy a pram that costs more than our car?

PFB is due in spring next year.

Today DP and I ventured into John Lewis to have a look at the prams and kind of fell in love with the Silver Cross Dune Dream - price tag of £1,430.

Our car cost £1,200 2 years ago 🥴

I used to be absolutely obsessed with the stokke prams and thought I'd got over that, now I'm back in silly price land.

GAH, help me!!

OP, you will use a sling for the first 6-9 months - baby is tiny and wants to be on you, will hate to be alone in big scary pram. Also it's so easy to carry them strapped to you with nothing to lift or take up space everywhere.

Then at 12-18 months you'll dump the pram for a light fold up pushchair like a Silver Cross (which will cost you £25 on FB marketplace).

In the 3 months you use it, it will get muddy, scratched getting in and out of car, and if you have a slightly careless childminder (as we did) she will manage to tear the stitching on the sunshade so that it's slightly frayed. And because your PFB loves her you will say nothing about it!

Spending £££ on a pram is fine if you have money to burn and your child will never want any help with Uni tuition fees or house deposit. But if those huge costs aren't already covered by a trust fund from you/ their grandparents, then put the cash in a savings account instead and buy 2nd hand from FB.

FWIW we got a fantastic mothercare orb for DS2, it was light as a feather and super easy to push one handed, massive basket, really fab pram. Cost me £25 and I gave it away for nothing when finished as worth zero by then.

Your call, but IMHO, it's such a waste.

Definitely worth looking second hand on marketplace or similar. I loved the Bugaboo Fox but really didn't want to pay that much for it. We found an even nicer Bugaboo Buffalo (the version before the Fox) and in a limited edition Diesel denim print for £250 on marketplace in basically perfect condition. Sadly having to sell it now as it doesn't convert to a double and we are due baby 2 in January.
But, it's definitely worth seeing if anyone is selling buggies you like 2nd hand as you'll get one so much cheaper and you won't mind as much when they smush a banana into it that you now have to try and clean because it wasn't over £1k.

randomusername666 · 26/09/2022 10:43

Check out 'previously loved' on ebay, FB marketplace, gumtree etc. A wipe over with Bleach / Milton will be fine.

Or ask for £ contributions from friends, family, baby shower guests in lieu of baby clothes and other gifts.

Unless money is no object, in which case just go for it.

I ended up with a thing about prams when mine were babies. The first one I bought was a compromise on price and I never really liked it. I ended up buying quite a few as my needs and theirs changed (13 month age gap). There's a very good secondhand market for them.
My gut feeling would be buy the one YOU want but do loads of research first and don't be afraid to talk to other people who have them and see what they think and find out if there's anything they don't like about it.
In fairness, mine was used a lot as we lived in the town and I walked to the shops/the dogs several times a day with it rather than it/they living in the car and not being used much!

idontevenknowanyonecalledblurb · 26/09/2022 10:45

I would save my money to buy a really good lightweight buggy. I've just sold my city mini buggy after two children and I loved it. Quick fold, lightweight, can take on holiday easily.

ivykaty44 · 26/09/2022 10:45

I can’t give you any reason why you shouldn’t spend more on a pram. To me it would be the correct way around

pompomsontheceiling · 26/09/2022 10:48

Because on marketplace you will find one at half the price and immaculate

Trinxsy · 26/09/2022 10:48

My dream pram for my twins was the bugaboo donkey which is about 1.5 for twin mode full price. I got ours for £500 from Facebook marketplace. Best thing I did. Its a lovely pram but I would have felt very disappointed paying that amount of money!

Speedweed · 26/09/2022 10:53

Don't do it - you'll probably end up with a few prams/pushchairs before your little one is too big for them, and there is no real resale value because there are so many people trying to get rid of perfectly good, nearly new prams/pushchairs/travel systems.

Different circumstances, terrain, weather etc will all change what you need it to do. If you can push it straight out of your front door to wherever you need to go, you'll need something different to a pram that has to be carried down steps and fold up and down one handed to go in the car. No decent pavements where you are? You'll need an all terrain base otherwise pushing is annoying as the wheels get stuck. And so on...

Get something cheap and secondhand for a newborn, then have a look at the expensive pram once they're here and you've got a better idea of your needs.

Pengwinn · 26/09/2022 10:57

Personally I don't think price always reflects the quality or usability of prams, there are definitely some brands that have the price tag just because of the name. That said many will retain their value somewhat when you want to sell it and if you want more than one child your cost for use might be more palatable. I'd look for second hand prams in the model you want first and then try out a few lower priced ones and see how they compare. I bought a floral cosatto pram for around £100 and loved it.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 26/09/2022 10:57

I’m going to go against the grain. I bought the Nuba travel system for my 10 month old, it was cheaper than the one you are looking at but I love it. I live rurally and have an estate and dogs so I knew I’d be dealing with some rougher terrain. Our boot is divided because of the dogs and we made sure the pram fit in half the boot. We also practiced putting it up and down before getting it.

I love my pram. I used the car seat attachment when DD was tiny and asleep but I was popping into town. I used the carrycot for her naps when she got to about 3 months old (she hated the Moses baksket and the pram was a decent size so lasted longer than the Moses basket). I have a lightweight fold up buggy - we bought it when we were going away for the weekend. I hate it. DD wouldn’t sleep in it so we ended up carrying her, she wouldn’t sleep in her travel cot. I can use the lightweight buggy if I’m popping into town but it has to be quick because it’s not comfortable to push for long periods of time. I don’t think it’s comfortable for DD to sit in either as she cries to get out of that one a lot sooner than her big pram. I can’t use the buggy in my village because the pavements are in too bad of a condition and it’s hard on my hands and wrists. Yes, my pram is scratched and it’s covered in squashed banana, avocado, baby snacks and spaghetti bolognese but when it gets really horrible we give it a clean and it looks lovely again (for about 2 minutes anyway). DD is close to walking but even when she’s walking I imagine we’ll take the big pram in case she needs a nap. I don’t see me swapping my big pram for my buggy any time soon.

BluntWithAC · 26/09/2022 10:58

I can't help as my SilverCross cost the same and was well worth the money. It was a travel system that turned in to a stroller, lasted both my DCs and I passed it down to a family member who is using it now for her newborn and still looks fine. 5 years and 3 children later. Well worth it IMO.

Iambee · 26/09/2022 11:01

Because you’ll use it for 10 months and then buy a much lighter stroller because it’s so much easier… speaking from experience. £1000 silver cross pram is in the garage, used our stroller pretty much everyday since our son was 10 months old. I guess we will use the pram again when we have a second baby..

Comedycook · 26/09/2022 11:03

You can buy a perfectly decent pram for much much less and put the money you saved in a savings account for your baby

Dinoteeth · 26/09/2022 11:04

One reason not to buy a more expensive pram than car...
You'll have an argument with insurance company should car with pram in boot be involved in an accident.

Pram will be used for a lot less time than the car will.

The car is self propelled the pram isn't.

Op look on the second hand market. . Most people only seem to use the big pram for a year - 18mths, even allowing for a second child thats still only 2-3 years use. People spend a fortune on prams and everyone seems to want new. Don't think you'll get any real money back on it when you go to sell it.

Which means there are serious bargains to be had on Gumtree, Facebook Market place, etc.

PerfectPainter · 26/09/2022 11:11

If you're going to be bringing up a baby I would hope you had the intelligence to know that you don't need to pay stupid money for a pram. I'd say that's a good reason

INeedNewShoes · 26/09/2022 11:16

Unless things have changed in the last 5 years, Silver Cross prams might look nice but they're horrible to handle compared to cheaper all-terrain brands.

My antenatal group friends mostly had Silver Cross prams and they're so heavy and cumbersome. I spent half what they did on a Jane all-terrain pram which was absolutely brilliant, folded smaller than the Silver Cross, could be steered one hand with ease, handle any surface easily and was light enough that I could fold it and lift it into the boot with one hand.

PandaOrLion · 26/09/2022 11:17

We’ve got a silver cross but I got it for £200 on marketplace. 3/4 had not been used. I set aside a bit of time every day to check there and eBay for one that was the right price for us.

redlou123 · 26/09/2022 11:34

We had a similar dilemma and I went with my heart and got the Silver Cross Reef (in earth). It has taken 4.5 years, struggling to conceive and recurrent miscarriage to get to this point (baby expected any time now - currently 40+2 weeks) and after a lot of back and forth, we decided to go with what we really wanted, even if it did seem a crazy price. A lot of the problems with older Silver Cross models have been improved with their latest models (the Reef and the Dune) and the Reef met all the specifications that were important to us (carrycot can be used as overnight sleeper, all-terrain, easy to fold down) and I thought I might regret it if I went for a different option that didn't quite do what I wanted it to. I obviously haven't used it yet but I still love it just as much as when I first saw it. We were fortunate that we got 15% off the bundle as we had the personal nursery shopping session with John Lewis and at that point Silver Cross products were included in the discount afterwards (I think that has been changed now though). I would say, if you can afford it, go for it!

HOTHotPeppers · 26/09/2022 11:41

I spent much less on my Bugaboo Cameleon 5 years ago. I agree with others if you're going to spend that money I'd go for a brand like Bugaboo as they last so well. I got mine with the view of it potentially lasting through 3 children rather than buying multiple lower quality prams. 4.5 year gap between my two and it's great for my youngest and will be fine if we have another after this.

pastypirate · 26/09/2022 11:42

I spent £700 Ish on a quinny buzz when they were fash. Got £80 for it at a car boot. Took ages to get shot of it.

My friends fought over my baby jogger though it's still around 10 years later!

isthismylifenow · 26/09/2022 11:45

Good grief, I am seriously out of the loop now. Well my baby is 21 now so have not looked at a pram price in 20 years.

I cannot believe the price of this pram! Whatever happened to the good old Graco from yesteryear.... And even then I ended up with a McLaren buggy which was used so much more....

Are prams a bit of a status symbol these days?

blockpavingismynightmare · 26/09/2022 11:46

Think about how much you will use it is a good point.
Then go for second hand

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 26/09/2022 11:58

For what it's worth I never found the perfect pushchair when DS was small, and ended up with a 3-wheel off-roader (Mothercare own brand) for walking around and a lightweight McLaren (Volo I think) for the tube. When DD came along I got a Baby Jogger City Mini (they were fairly new at the time) and I didn't need anything else. The last thing that you should consider is how it looks, because I guarantee you won't care about looks if it pisses you off in other ways, like being too heavy or not good over rough ground.

QuiltedHippo · 26/09/2022 12:03

Because they might hate it and want to be in a sling all the time
